Beta version released!
I was so happy that I had to make the text so large, the BETA/DEMO of Total Chaos is OUT!!
But before downloading just keep in mind that I am not responsable for any heart attacks, spooky nightmares or anything like that...
The beta has some limits. I have blocked off some uncomplete parts of the (1 and only) level featured in the BETA. When playing, there are some rules that I advise you follow:
1- Run the mod in 3D (not software mode) because it lags like crap. (Only run in software if you really have to...)
2- Please PLEASE dont use the run function. Best to turn auto-run off and dont use the shift key because it ruins the gameplay majorly. Also can cause some bugs in the triggers. I havent yet made any limits on the running yet but in the full thing I hope to slow down the player speed
3- When done testing, best to hear your surgestions on what I can do to improve the mod. Please post (on a rating out of 5) for each Graphics, Gameplay, Scaryness, Funness so I know what I did right and wrong...
like at the bottom of your post like
graphics=5
gameplay=4
etc
You dont have to follow the rules but its best to do so...
Finaly, heres the file, enjoy:
And watch your 'Heads'........ (thats floating heads*plop*

Gonna start writing something here to boost your thread´s post count ;).
First, I´ll be completely sincere on this so you can take my words and see them from the eyes of the player, o.k?. There´s absolutely no offense on what I´m gonna write so if you read something you don´t like or don´t agree just skip it :).
Gameplay: I expected something completely different, story driven, more like "Alone in the Dark" but somehow the gameplay is relatively senseless, running around in small corridors and not knowing exactly what to do. Apart from that the map can be played easily; not that it´s an easy map (I never found myself lost for more than some seconds) but not specially difficult if you find the Double Barreled shotgun... I also liked and enjoyed the idea of little number of monsters that are surprising or difficult to kill. It was obvious they were Lost Souls (they´re bright XD) but their sounds are disturbing...
Mapping: Mapping wise I don´t think is something really special. I mean, there are lot´s of square shapes, boxes piled up here and there with no apparent reason and there´s not a feel to the map where the player is lead to somewhere. I also found some missing textures and never got to know what or why the chains were... Also something very important: scaling!!. The whole place is enormous compared to the size of the player and you can see the lock of the door is where his head would be!!!. If you corrected that and tried to give more variety to the player (and some details, some corridors are just completely plain) it could be better. Oh, the yellow fog isn´t helping either and I´d change it to a black one :D. Apart from that you could try more variety on the paintings and the room themselves. Definitely, the mapping is the part that I least enjoyed.
Scriping: There were some nice things thrown in, like the corpse action and such... I think you can do much better than that, but the ideas are good, you could just try to polish them a little bit more.
Ambience: The yellow fog is quite annoying for me and makes the whole map look dirty (not to mention it remained when I ran Legacy with the original Iwad again XD). The wrong scaling of things also makes for not so good ambient... Some rooms just make no sense (like the one with lots of pillars) but are nice to the ambience ´cos you just turn around on corners with care and things like that. Sounds are also nice and make for a surprising gameplay. You could be less loud with them, but it´s nice... One thing that is quite annoying is that low sound you hear almost in every moment, I think it should be used with less frequency... What else?. Oh, yeah, corpses. Doom corpses are not really impressive to the player unless you use unkown graphics to the player... If you´d want to create disturbing atmospheres just try deforming everything that is familiar and things like that since the skull on a pole didn´t impress me ;).
Notice that almost all things I posted are negative. That doesn´mean that I found this to be total crap but you could do it much better and I wanted to focus on what I would correct if I was mapping this :). There are positive things about it (for example, overall is a different experience) but to make it more attractive you could fix it´s problems. Now with the ratings:
Graphics: 2. You can do much better textures and mapping.
Gameplay: 2.5. Quite average ´cos of the things said above. Also, 32 maps like this could be boring to the player. If I may make a suggestion, consider a lesser number of maps, a storyline and there you go.
Scaryness: 3. I wasn´t scared at all. Just some surprises here and there with the disturbing sounds and things I did not expected. Maybe it´s not varied or realistic enough??. Ambience contributes a lot to the scare factor.
Funness: 2. Again, when feeling without lead the player may have not fun. Consider also the repetitive rooms and boxes: it ruins the sensation of exploring something unknown... More puzzles, some objects you can pick up and use and things like that would make this something more special (I see it as adventure oriented).
And that´s all. I hope you found my contributions useful.

You know Wad, it seems as if you put a lot of energy on the stuff you do but I´d want to ask you something: do you plan your work or just do it by the minute. Maybe it could pay for you if you wrote an storyline, drew some plans and then plan the gameplay. If you´re keen enough and are back to Legacy (one thing does not imply the other, of course) you could start planning things for the V2.0. You could be the author of the first "Haunted Mansion" of Legacy with puzzles, objects and things like that.
Wad'a'Holic
October 16th, 2005, 08:05 PM
When I work on my stuff I usealy just have a bit of a walk and think about it, then when I get home I start working on it, lol.
There is a storyline btw, I posted this at www.doomworld.com but I forgot to do it here, it goes something like this:
A rare desese has been discovered and you have been infected with it. In the last 5 years, reports of people having 'interactive' nightmares have been heard. Researchers have tried to find a reason for this nightmarish mental desese but have come up with nothing.
The desese causes people to start having nightmares in there sleep. When they shut there eyes, they are brought into a world created by there mind, a nightmare world. If you die in this world, you die in the real world. You have fallen asleep and it is up to you to get out of your nightmare.
Storyline is still a work in progress.
thanks for your surgestions guys, :D

Hello everybody,
Since its the holidays I thought it would be a good time to anounce a new project that anyone can join.
It's called Total Chaos and most of you have proberly tried that attempt of mine to make a BETA of it. Basicly its a mod that is suppost to scare the crap out of you, this means it needs to be the most scariest thing you have ever played.
I am working on a storyline but I want to get a team together first. Com'on, don't be shy, it would be something to do in the holidays.
So Join the team now and get the chance to be part of a project that will bring Legacy back from behind and infront of all those other snozzy source ports!
Post what you want to do in the project. We could do with anyone from graphics to levels.
EDIT: If interested please post in this thread or drop me an email: wadaholic@gmail.com
Another EDIT: Please be serious, don't put up stupid posts like 'some' people have...

I volunteer DooMGoaT to make some nifty graphics. Will this mod feature the mecha-hitler from Wolf3d?
Wad'a'Holic
November 15th, 2005, 07:59 PM
We are mainly looking for new textures and graphics, nothing taken from any other games so there might not be any mecha-hitler... Unless you can make new sprites similar.
EDIT: Try and get Doom Goat to post in this thread so I can find out his contact details if he is interested...

We currently need:
- Level designers
- Sprite artists
- Texture artists
- Concept people (to create scary theme ideas)
You must be able to do a clean job of it.

Good luck with that. Don't waste our time with crap like this, if you want to start a project you need to at least create some base material to show everyone. You'll get the same reply from pretty much any Doom forum.
I have some base material. I told you all that there was a BETA that I made but I thought we could remake the mod much better as a team project insted.

I think doom2's map30 midi might be fitting with such a mod, anything else would probably be better as custom midi, that is if you go with midi. make sure to convert it to mus format.
note, current legacy release doesn't like midi, and mp3 needs to be command line enabled. It's a mod so a batch file could be fixed up so the end user can run it without having to add cvars..if not, stick with either mus or script enabled wav for your music.

Come on everyone! Stay on topic!
I'm seeing what the beta is like:
EDIT:
It's pretty good. I found that the level was nicely suspenseful. The scares were a little tame. But that can be fixed. I'm gonna look at Aliens Doom again for inspiration. :)
The level design was pretty good. I liked the start especially. But when the skulls came along, they were rather strange. More curio than creep. Again, with a few suitable Sprites, they'd be a lot better.
The yellow-ish fog reminds me of that Quake III level. It looks effective here as well though.
Sound was reasonable. It to contributed to the suspense pretty well. Music needs some working. Maybe an AVP2-esque track with some digitized "stingers"? That stuff is great.
All in all, 3.5/5.0 average.

g6672D
November 20th, 2005, 04:12 AM
I have got a MIDI editor. I'm not that good at composing things but I may do OK.
Like I suggested, background track with similar style to what's in AVP2 (game). To complement, a few digital sounds that can be played at appropriate times (stingers).
If someone else can do it, then that'd be better though.
Oh. And I suck at making new graphics. :)
PS->iori, please remove that remark about CrashOverRide.

WadAHolic, what did you mean by concepts?
Hmmm...MIDIs. It would be interesting to take the most creepy Doom 1/2 MIDIs and remix them: change the tempo, add effects and maybe change the overall tone to make completely new songs. I'm thinking E1M8.
And oh yeah, iori's remark about CrashOverRide. What's a prock?

oi, i can do some music stuff. i dont have a midi editor (yet) but i could get one, and im kinda ok at composing stuff. i used to compose a lot of songs a few years ago, and im sure that with some practice i could make some rather creepy music stuff. and to quote myself and rusty, me: "so you want me to make creepy music that, when combined with doom, makes you continually crap your pants for several minutes cuz youre so scared?" rusty:"that would be most excellent." ya.
EDIT: i could maybe also do some texture graphics, and maybe some sprites, but i should warn you im probably not as good with sprite things as textures. and i might be able to make some concept things, but im not too good at that.

November 22nd, 2005, 07:16 PM
oi, mappage idea-age. kinda ok, kinda good, kinda bad, i guess. ok, big hall. really long, really wide, really tall. you walk in through a semi-wide hallway full of absolutely no surprises, but maybe a few secrets, and when you walk into the hall the first thing you see is a key (for some reason i think it should be the yellow one) at the back of the hall, up a flight of stairs. then you see all the statues on the sides. the statues are enemies (hell knights, barons of hell, and cyberdemons come to mind) which seem to have been turned to stone right as they were throwing a fireball or wha-ever. in heroic positions, i guess. so you just see those and stuff, and then you walk up to the key and take it, and when you take it you hear a sound like a door openning. but not your typical doom door. a slow clicking sound followed by a thud. then you turn around, and you see two lost souls just hovering in the air. then you start hearing this low, slow, pulsating sound (think raiders of the lost ark low, slow, pulsating sound) and you see a small square hallway above the one you came in through, and a light is pulsating (like the sleep light on a macintosh computer) in time with the sound, and you see it getting brighter, and then this pain elemental comes out of the hallway and forms a formation with the lost souls (did i mention the little hallway is just barely big enough for a pain elemental?). now the pulsating light is blinding, so you can only see about half of whats going on. then it starts spewing out lost souls at an accelerated rate. most of them start to attack you, but some go into the statues at the side of the hall, which come to life, and two others go into larger square hallways off the the sides. these hallways are just big enough for a mancubus, which is fitting, because a pair of mancubi then come out and jump down to the floor and soon more enemies (including an arch-vile) come into the hall and soon theyre all wreaking total chaos, and the only way to stop it all is by killing the pain elemental, which is really, really, really strong. ya. hope you like it. and sorry for the long post.
cheers,

I'm more scared of that after knowing how he built it. :D
My question then, is what does that look like when you change the viewing angle by 90 degrees? :p

It'd work. Keep in mind that this is easy to do with models ( in doom probably 3D sectors ) when using texture that is nice enought.
It is something very similar to legacy effect with dynamic lights.

Looks very very cool Wad'a'Holic!
Will this sorta thing be in the mod you showed me shots of a few weeks ago?
good stuff.
If I remember right the only way I could get dyno light beams in legacy1.4x was vertical from floor or ceiling. In short, a dyno light without sprite or fraggle scripted conrona with a lot of intensity and then a cyan/clear texture next to it so the dyno light would reflect apon it..
The cool thing about this though is that the light beam actually shows up on the floor and looks as it is at a slant becuase of the reflective floor, which is more realistic unlike a straight beam.

I'm sure it would be possible in Legacy though it would look really inferior and be really tedious. 3D floors, cyan pieces and dynamic light.

Why would it look so inferior? GZDoom can't do much graphically that Legacy can't. Only thing that comes to mind is the reflective floors. Legacy (at least 1.43) has dynamic lights, translucency, etc. Doing things like floor mist is so much easier with DECORATE sprites though.

And hi-res textures play an important role.

Whats wrong with legacy1.4x? It looks sweet to me. turn your coronas and fov up for a min. and dwell on that for awhile. :P
It's the first that I know you could do such a thing..
And actually looks damn cool.
Just because it isn't being worked on currently? anymore? opensource?
Doesn't change the fact that it's one of the best source engines out there..
Remember this sort of thing could be done with legacy a long time ago.
Legacy2.0 is being worked on, I'd imagne there's a ton of things the devs are contemplating, only a matter of time.

I still love my copy of legacy, I admit its a wee bit annoying that she cant make slopes but apart from that she still has a lot going for her and Im currently working on a whole bunch of projects for her that were put on hold a couple of years ago when it looked like Legacy 2 was nearly finished.
Its nice to know gzdoom can run legacy maps now, so all those folk who could never get legacy to run properly can try out the maps in gzdoom.

They'll look like crap in GZDoom, specially if the mapper made extensive use of coronae.
