This would probably get a lot more replies if I had posted it in the general Doom forum, but it'd probably end up just getting moved here, so...

Hey there, everybody. About a year ago I first tried doing some Doom "remasters", and they turned out really terrible. Since then, I've become much more experienced in music production since then, and I now have better tools at my disposal (Reason 3.0 :D ).

To cut to the chase, I've been working on and off on a full replacement set for the Ultimate Doom soundtrack. I now have a "beta" version of every Ultimate Doom remaster. I think a lot of the tracks sound really nice, but they all still need a bit of work. That's why I'm posting some of them here. With your comments, criticisms, and suggestions, I can hopefully continue to improve these (and the rest of the set along with them) until they all sound good enough to release.

I'm calling them "remasters" instead of remixes because the primary purpose is to take the original midi arrangements and make them sound really (hopefully) awesome, without changing the original feel or intent of the song, as much as possible.

So without further adieu, here are a bunch of the tracks I've finished so far.

Doom Remastering Project (incomplete) (http://sl4.poned.com/drmp/)

I'm extremely happy with some of the tracks, while other ones obviously need work. The better suggestions I receive on these, the more likely they'll improve to your liking. Thanks in advance, and I hope you all enjoy them!

Mike

Sounds pretty good so far. I use Reason too and I've tried a few remasterings but I'm not that good yet.

Those are great, I like 'em!

Maybe just a hint of a wider sound and not a small room sound, like a 3D kind of effect but that is just my opinion.

e3m1 and e1m5 have an open kinda sound but I suspect you are making the sound according to feel of the particular map which is good too.

I look forward to hearing the completed product *cool*

Awesome, thank you! :D

Any tracks in particular you think could benefit most from this?

Hehe, nope, I'm just lucky ;D

Heh, my first post in the Music forum.

Those are very good! I hope the ones to come are just as good. :)

Maybe I should learn Reason... I want to have my own Paranormal music.

those are some of the best Doom covers i've heard, keep up the nice work!
would you have any problem with people using these in their levels?

Wow, you seriously think so? Haha, I'm flattered! *turvy*

Anyway, if you want to use these in your levels, I'm not going to try to stop you, but my plan for them was to get them all finished and release them as a pack like Sycraft's or DJ_Redlight's, where enabling it is entirely up to the user, not the creator of the map. It'd be like if someone wanted to include the jDoom Texture Pack with their PWADs. Well, I don't know. That's the closest comparison I can come up with. Anyway, use them for whatever you want, as long as you're not selling them, and you give me credit for them (of course).

EDIT: Which Ultimate Doom tracks do you guys want me to upload soon? I've got remasters of all of the Ultimate Doom tracks, and if you tell me which ones you want to hear, I can do some more work on those and put them online in the near future (or not, depending on their current state). Don't ask for Doom II tracks, I haven't done any of them yet.

I thought at first of asking to use them, but sadly I found them to not really fit with the theme of my project as of yet. Maybe for a trailer, but in-game I'm afraid it doesn't match up... which is why I said I want to learn Reason.

Hrm, I forgot what else I was going to say... :(

I think this has been attempted by several people in the last few years. I really like the guitar samples. The bass, however, sounds really typical of a default patch in a sequencing program like Reason. I know Reason has like 3 gigs of samples and such. But it's been my experience that working with hardware synths creates MUCH richer bass lines. But anyway, it all sounds pretty cool.
