Did anyone notice this:
IDBEHOLDR - rad suit
IDBEHOLDI - invisibility
IDBEHOLDV - invulnerability
IDBEHOLDA - all map
IDBEHOLDL - light-amp
IDBEHOLDS - berserk
Spells out RIVALS. It seems that I'm the only one in the world that had noticed it!

As a web search (http://www.google.com/search?q=idbehold+rivals) will demonstrate, this has been noticed before.

Interesting... I wonder if it's a coincidence or if it was done that way for a reason?

I'd bet it was on purpose, ID wouldn't make something like that without knowing :)

I'd bet it was on purpose, ID wouldn't make something like that without knowing :)I wouldn't be too sure about that without some evidence to back it up. What are the odds of six random letters being the anagram of a word? Probably not too bad if you avoid uncommon letters and include a couple of vowels. (You can experiment here (http://www.wordsmith.org/anagram/index.html), for instance.) Or failing that, there is a fair chance that there would be some other pattern that they fit into (with a greater or lesser degree of contrivance).
By the same logic, you could claim that when the Great Lakes were named, it was most likely deliberate that the initials spell the word "HOMES".

Well, consider this, the september 11th attack is strangely, the 9th month on the 11th, making it 9-11, as in, emergency....makes you think..

Yes, another example that apparent coincidences occur all the time (especially if you go looking for them), and shouldn't necessarily have any meaning read into them.
Pretty much anything can be viewed as a "suspicious coincidence" if you choose/want to, because there are so many ways you can create linkages between ideas when you have free rein to do so.

Well, there is always the question as to "Why does Idbeholds give you berserk? Shouldn't it be idbeholdb?" Otherwise... yeah, it's a coincidence.

Answer that, Grazza :D

I know the answer. The letters are mostly random, and don't represent the items.

*types in "idbehold" in ZDOOM*
*sees the list of power up options*
*sees the item "STR" avaliable, as opposed to "Berserk"*
*answers his own question*

No. It doesn't, it just gives you full health and bulks up your punching power, hence the reason it switches you to you fists upon picking it up.

That the letters after IDBEHOLD spell out "rivals" was known *at least* as early as 1996. I found a post by someone called CRYLUX in a thread called "Need codes please :-) Hurrrrrryyyyy" in the Usenet group alt.games.doom.ii on October 26th, 1996 that notices this. I mentioned it in two threads in alt.games.doom, and rec.games.computer.doom.help, respectively, in October, 2000.
