View Full Version : a couple of questions

Hello,
Please excuse me if these questions seem elementary or from a novice. I am not as well versed in all the various Doom 'things' - games, levels, codes, terminology, etc. as most of you seem to be. I just play Doom on my PS1 with a friend, trying to beat all of the levels. Then I plan to get Doom II.
First, how many levels are there? I thought there were 30 - but then something I read listed 54.
Second, I guess perhaps this is more of a comment, but including some inquiry.
My friend and I (I do the 'driving' - she's a good navigator - she's amazing at remembering which turns to take and what's around each corner. My sense of direction is a bit lacking!) made it to the Tower of Babel (level 23) without using the 'god' mode. Its taken us some time, but we got there.
Seeing that the Cyberdemon was brutal and we had to keep restarting (which leads me to another question - is there a shortcut on PS1 so that we don't have to hit the 'reset' button, wait for it to restart, then go to options and put in the password'?), we ended up using that 'god' or invincible mode. We have used it a few times during the next couple levels (we are on 25 - I like that one!!). I don't really like the idea of using it - of 'cheating' in a sense, but I am gathering that people tend to use it fairly regularly. Is that true? Is it impressive that we made it to that point without it?
Thanks so much for your input to this somewhat 'novice' Doom player.

For the record, only the PSX version uses passcodes (although I'm unsure about D64 as I never played it). The PC versions just give you the ability to save anywhere in-game.
First, how many levels are there? I thought there were 30 - but then something I read listed 54.
The PSX version has 54, because it has I believe around 28 Doom II levels (they took out some), then 3 or 4 extra levels, and the rest are Ultimate Doom levels.
Seeing that the Cyberdemon was brutal and we had to keep restarting, we ended up using that 'god' or invincible mode. We have used it a few times during the next couple levels (we are on 25 - I like that one!!). Considering it's the PSX version, it depends on the skill level. If you were on the easiest difficulty setting (I Am a Wimp), probably not. But the controls are terrible so I would say it's pretty good that you made it that far on the default difficulty level (Hurt Me Plenty, I think).
(which leads me to another question - is there a shortcut on PS1 so that we don't have to hit the 'reset' button, wait for it to restart, then go to options and put in the password'?)
Easy! Press start, then select. Then you'll get a menu and one of the options is the password menu.
EDIT:
By the way, I didn't notice until now that you made a new thread for this-- you didn't necessarily need to do that. You could have just put it in the other thread before. Try and do that next time. :)

okay - I will use previous threads in the future - now that I know that they will be read (I guess they show that they are updated by jumping to the top of the list?)
Thanks for your advice. This generated a couple more questions though. So, for the PC version - you don't have to start each level at the beginning if you get killed? If so, thats neat.
I guess I am confused about the levels and such on my doom disc. I do remember seeing the 'Ultimate Doom' option, but I thought that for Doom II I would need to purchase that separately - I don't remember seeing it.
And I figured that for Ultimate Doom, I would need to select that - by the way, is that very different from Doom 1?
So, for the regular Doom 1- there are how many levels (we are on 25 - are there just five more?)
I also remember seeing the 'hurt me plenty', but I assumed that I would have to select it. You are saying that its the default?
Thanks again for your help. Sorry if it sounds like I am not too familiar with all the terminology, like I said.

OK about the PC Ultimate Doom: All it is is another 9 level episode for Doom. So instead of only 27 maps, you get 36 maps.

when you say maps - I had this trouble yesterday - on PS1 (is that the same as PSX?) - I was informed that there are levels, not maps and episodes - so, please rephrase that so I know according to levels what that means.
Thanks!

Levels are maps. It's just that on the PSX version, Ultimate Doom isn't divided into separate episodes, so they use LEVELxx for the map number. Read this:

Thanks - but I keep getting this message when I try to go to the site you list:
Referer Link Error
On every single HTML page of GameFAQs is the following request:
Feel free to link to this page, but not directly to the FAQs..
You're seeing this error message because it appears that you're linking from an external site directly to one of the text files stored at GameFAQs. GameFAQs is not a free public file server. Bandwidth costs money, and when sites link directly to files stored on the site, it becomes both a financial and resource drain. We've tried asking, but some sites simply don't care, so now we've implemented a technical solution.
Your browser is reporting that you linked to a GameFAQs-hosted FAQ from http://forums.newdoom.com/showthread.php?t=28237
There are four possible reasons you are seeing this message:
You came from a direct link to a FAQ on GameFAQs from another site, and your link was properly blocked. See the paragraph above for why.
Your web browser is passing improper URL data in the Referrer header. Your web browser may be over-compensating for a mistake you made in the address bar, and passing this information unintentionally. To fix this, just click the "Home" link on the left and surf normally.
Your web browser is passing forged URL data in the Referrer header. Some browsers can be configured to hide referrer information, but instead of passing a blank header, it passes a forged one. To fix this, change your browser's security settings. If you are using Opera and having problems, try viewing this page for some pointers.
You are behind a firewall or proxy server, and it is passing forged URL data in the Referrer header. If you are using one of these services, you or your network administrator may need to change the configuration.

I hope this works. Just click and then find "Level Guide".

Thanks.
That's clearing things up! So - looks like there are 33 levels in Doom 1 then. And looks like Doom II should be on the disc I have.
Thank you!

Yeah, you can go straight to Doom 2 from the title screen. Where it says Ultimate Doom, if you hit right on the D-Pad, then it will go over to Doom 2.

Ya I was just wondering, to the veteran doomers, are some of the psx levels not in pc version such as:
hell gate
twilight descends
threshold of pain
redemption denied
the marshes
the mansion
club doom
similar to levels in pc version such as:
Slough of Despair
Dis
Warrens
Downtown
Industrial Zone
Gotcha
Chasm
Spirit World
Living End
Icon of Sin
Wolfenstein
Grosse
Anyway steph1pk, you don't know what you have been missing in the pc version.
66 levels of pc vs 59 levels of psx.
You and your friend are the same as my brother and I. My brother knows how to dodge and stuff and knows which weapon to use but I know where everything is, such as weapons, where monsters are hiding, items, keys, and triggers that activates traps. I have pc version. My brother would say, you suck at killing such and such and monster and I would say, where are you going, and watch out, there is a baron behind that door, or demons are going to teleport in if you walk through this point.

Actually there's much more if you count the thousands of levels/mods/levelsets available for the PC version. ;)

Ya, I cannot even finish them all just because there are so many.
Heck, for the pc version, you can download an editor such as doom editor and make your own levels if you want.

I think you meant Doom Builder.

yeah, signofzeta, my friend tends to get dizzy if she tries doing the 'driving', and sometimes she has to look away if I go really fast and make a lot of twists and turns quickly (she has a big screen tv - which is actually pretty cool for Doom). But it just blows me away sometimes how exact she is about remembering what is where - I'll say that I can't believe she remembered that there are weapons to be picked up around this turn and down that hall and around that corner, or that a monster will be coming if I turn down to the right, then left, etc. I get all turned around and it would take me several times before I remember which direction, etc. So, yeah, we make a good team, as it sounds like you and your brother do.

I am immune to playing doom and so is my brother. My cousins get dizzy just by playing the game and so are everybody else I know.
I would say, YOU IDIOT, you are going the wrong way and stuff like that and you forgot to get the rocket launcher and you are supposed to go here first. I have a set route that I take so I get all weapons and all items and kill all monsters and get 100% secrets. I also memorize all the triggers, monster placements, item placements, and such. My brother makes his own route so I yell at him for not going the route I take. I tend to make a route so that I uncover the whole level. Does your friend make sure to get every item and uncover every part of the level in the automap? If there is an area in the automap that does not seem right, I automatically go there and try redo my route. Every time I play doom, I play by doing the same route. I don't go straight for the exit wihtout getting 100% on everything. My brother actually knows where the exit is but cannot uncover the whole map.
My brother would say, YOU SUCK, you can't even kill an imp with only one shotgun blast. He is picky about how I play and how I cannot use berserk punch on all the imps and all the monsters in the containment area level and that he can. He says that only noobs don't use that on everything in that level. Yes I am a noob but I tried beating third episode in doom 1 and in nightmare skill and beat everything. Unfortunately I did not get 100% on everything. Too hard. My brother can finish the whole game in ultra violence skill but I can only do hurt me plenty.
Seriously get the pc version. And yeah I meant doom builder, the one with the codeimp and stuff like that. Make your own level so you would memorize the triggers and stuff but your friend would not. Pc version has so many doom fan made levels that you can download off the internet. I downloaded a few and I can't even finish the level because I haven't set up a route for that level but I already set up routes for all levels in doom, doom2, and some of final doom.
Playstation is a little too old right now. I have one and I don't use it. It is dusty and not used.

We don't have a set plan for getting 100% of kills, secrets, etc... we certainly try to though. We don't have a specific route - in fact sometimes, we end up in a spot we realize we didn't come across before - so of course the next time we will be sure to go to it.
Thanks for the advice - I will certainly consider getting the PC version - sounds like its a lot more popular.
The other night we ended up using the invincible mode for a little while in level 25 - but it STILL took us a little while because kept falling off of one or two of the platforms - especially the narrow one - where you just have a small space and can't fall forward or back.
Ace said something a few posts back in addressing my question about not having to reset each time. I tried what was suggested - to just hit start after we got killed in the level, but it just restarts the level with fewer weapons. I didn't see a menu option for the password......

To steph1pk:
Restarting a level with your stuff via passwords: hit the start button to pause your game. Now hit the select button. There's your options menu. You can do this after you die as well. Also keep in mind that the PSX will remember the last inputted password until a)you put in a different one, or b)you switch off or reset the console.
To signofzeta
All those extra levels in the PSX version are all new. They are not remakes/edits of any of the PC levels left out. If you want to play them, they are all included in the ConsoleDoom.wad. You can also download them individually from the idgames archive. Kaiser converted them over to the PC, minus the colored lighting.

As I recall, Ledmeister has a list on his site showing the various levels/maps for ALL platforms and PC games of Doom.
http://ledmeister.com/
I had a Playstation and Nintendo before a PC, and I can tell you, (as many others,) that Nintendo Doom has all original levels. The PSX version of Final Doom (that I had) has several levels that are not in Plutonia or TNT as far as I know.
Check the list Ledmeister has to see. Looks like his site has changed since I was there last, so I ain't sure.

The first 8 or so levels in PSX Final Doom are from the Master Levels disc. So they weren't new.

nice... it would be so sick if someone can make a wad file that features the missing pc version levels for the playstation, but that won't happen which makes pc version the best.

Thanks Nuxius. I see what you mean now - after I hit start and the new game begins with limited weapons, hit start again to now pause this game, then hit select to get to the password menu.

Cyberdemons take how many hits to kill?

I thought Cyberdemons can take on 40+ rockets, not 20. The GBA version's Cyberdemon will die in 20 or so rockets. The Spider Mastermind I think is right, though.

Besides some errors on the chart, it doesn't count in the random factors. Sometimes a zombie takes three bullets instead of two, and sometimes a demon is killed with three shotgun shells instead of two.
