I found this ati radeon 9600 pro 128mb on ebay - http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5226087360 and I was wondering if it would run doom 3 smoothly at least on low quality?

My friend has a 9600 128mb and it doesn't run it that well, but you should manage high quality at about 640*480, or 800*600 with shadows off(shadows cause alot of slowdown)

alright thanks. The guy selling the cards has 2 different types. One says it its ati built and doesn't come with drivers or anything, and the other doesn't say it is ati built and comes with drivers and stuff. The one that is ati built has a picture and the card says Ati on it. But the other one doesn't say ati. Which one do you think is better? The one I posted at the top is one that doesn't say ati built. This one is - http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5226126520

Get that green one. The other one has a 64bit memory bus which makes me a sad panda.*bawl*
The 9600 won't give you much eye candy but will manage (at least its not a GF4MX).

I have 9600 and I have pretty good quality and usually have over 25 fps. Buy anything lower than that though and be a saaaad panda.

I got a different one since the other ended too soon. Same kind though. It was 48 bucks including the shipping cost.

Alright, now I am F****** PISSED!!! I got the card in the mail today and plugged it into my comp, changed the settings to AGI (aparently the f***** that made the comp mis-read AGP). Then I plugged the monitor into the new card and the monitor light came on for a second but then went yellow and didn't turn on. I even tried to install the catalyst drivers but it said it couldn't find any ati hardware. I'm just about ready to put a fist through my monitor. WTFF?????????!!!!!!!!!!! *burn* *burn* *burn*

First of all, your monitor has nothing to do with this. The problem you're having probably occurs because the graphics card isn't properly installed.

Did your monitor show anything whatsoever when you installed the card? If not, then it's a bit loose in the slot. If it did show something, tell us what you did and we can maybe help you more.

Have you tried using a different graphics card, and see what it does? Or try the new card in a different computer?

It clicked in and it kinda turned on for a second but didn't show anything then turned off again. I don't have another agp card on me so I can't test the slot. I haven't yet tried the card in a different comp but I will soon if I can't get this.

I decided to sell that card to a friend so I am now trying for an nvidia card. I was thinking a geforce fx 5500 or better. Would that work like a radeon 9600 or better?

I would say get at least a 6200 so you can run DX9 games decently. If your not willing to spend that much a Radeon 9550 will do. Just don't touch an FX without using a 10 ft pole (no offense Planky).

My card's a geforce 6600, it should be under $140 now. i can run doom 3 at high quality, 800x600, and get a solid 40 fps.

I think you mean 6600GT, rustyslacker. That is, unless you're from another country or something. Here in the States, the 6600 can be had for around $100 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?submit=PROPERTY&SubCategory=48&propertycodevalue=679:10551&bop=and), with the 6600GT coming in around $150 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?submit=PROPERTY&SubCategory=48&propertycodevalue=679:10550&bop=and).

Also, to doommaster666, I agree with The Undertaker, avoid the GeForceFX series like the plague. Not only is the lower end of the series underpowered (5700FX down) but even going to something like the FX5900, you still face the problem of having your games look terrible when compared to the Radeon 9000 series of cards.

Now that I have been looking over the site about my motherboard, I noticed that I am probably fucked at ever getting a good video card for my computer. The only card that would work that I could possibly get is a 9700 I guess. That might not even work because it says gigabyte radeon 9700. And I emailed them and they wrote it MIGHT work. I looked for pci cards that might work and I can only find ones like x800xt's and they are way too expensive. I can't believe there aren't 9600's 9700's or 9800's that are pci.

geforce 6600s (yeah, i had teh price wrong), and 6600gts are both available in pcie, as are the Radeon X700 and Radeon X600.

GeForce 6600GT's are very good, with mine (AGP) I can run doom 3 very fast around 30-60fps at ultra quality with 4xAA (maybe down to high at 1024*768 with no AA on less than 1gb of PC2700 333Mhz ram) and a athlon xp 3000+ (not 64 bit)
