I have them both! I began playing Ultimate Doom a few minutes ago and I just finished E4M1. Boy, it's much harder than the other episodes.

How can something be worse that's all of the better thing plus more?

Anyway, since there's an official patch for Doom1 -> Ultimate Doom there shouldn't be that many people who don't have E4.

Because they've changed E1M1If that's really a problem for you, then you can use the shareware iwad as a pwad together with the Ultimate Doom iwad: "-iwad doom.wad -file doom1.wad".

They added one secret (the elevator in the other secret) and a door to the outside near the start. I wonder how this can 'destroy' a level...

The elevator is in the original doom.

I never figured out how to get to the last secret in Ultimate DOOM E1M1. i get the elevator and to the outside area and it says SECRET: 66%.

There's another elevator inside the elevator secret which boosts you up into a small hall.

The orange text secret is the one most people miss. You have to trip the yellow text secret first though.

The third one is just the door that leads outside.

IMO it ruined the effect of the secret. Sure, before the secret was extremely easy to find, but when they added the door it just seemed stupid. The door was way too big, and it didn't fit. Plus it really just allowed you to go around and find the original secret, so that secret really blew everything.

I have both, I got DooM first, shareware, then registered, then recently bought DooM Collector's Edition, containing Ultimate DooM. I prefer the original DooM, tho, I don't like that outside door either.

And it took me ages to work out what was making a "lift" noise every time I walked into the "Zig-Zaggy" room.

i like ultimate doom, as i dont have doom 1. shame really, as i wanted to play it :(

i like the pitch variations of sounds on the old versions of doom (1.2 etc). Oh yeah and they changed the shotgun guy a bit they added a bright flag to his firing frame which is better IMO. I wonder why they never added one to the cyberdemon?

Ultimate Doom. A long, long time ago I had the original shareware version that came out of Doom 1. I remember getting soooo pissed off when I finally get through E1M8 and couldn't play the rest of it. RARGH!

i was really confused when i first beat e1m8 and i had the shareware version. i was happy, confused, then angry, in that order.

"This is the shareware version of doom. You need to order the entire trilogy."

And don't forget the swastika that was in the older versions of Doom1 in E1M4. There's those 4 unused sprites of a shell and bullet.

Heh, my roomate was playing it in Doom3: Collector's Edition and he got to that room and he was all like "Wtf, shouldn't there be a swastika here?!" I looked at the Doom Wiki the other day and found out it was taken out after v1.2. Damn nazis :P
