Hello! I have made a somewhat good legacy WAD that contains 3 maps. The third is a secret level. The second map is the best because the other 2 dont have that good architecture, but are still very fun to play.
Download it here: http://www.olddoom.com/featured/gllegacy_cathedral.zip
PLEASE read the "read me" file first or you wont understand the storyline. It contains important info on the WAD too.
Aslo, please tell me what you think because I may redetail it and get ideas for more WADs. *grin*

First of all, how do I post screenshots with that [img]xxx[img] thing?
In this situation, even If i did there are too many good ones to post so maybe I'll E-Mail them to you in a word document.

You should just READ the 'read me', play the WAD. The Some of the architecture actually looks pretty decent, especially in map 02 if you play the whole thing. There really isnt a need for screenshots.

You upload the images and put the link between the img tags.
If it looks interesting I'll play it, but I wont play a wad just based on wad the author says in the readme.
In this case I'll make an exception and download it and try it :)

Is that enough screenshots or do you want more? I'll put more up if you want. :)

No, I think that's enough for me. My only gripe with it is some of the textures aren't aligned, although that's probably because I spend alot of time aligning every texture of mine exactly. What can I say? I'm picky. :p
Other than that, they look very cool. Also, please don't double post. Seriously. You don't want the kittens to die, do you? ;)

Thank you. *l7*
Note: (i'm not making this up) in these particular shots, all the missaligned textures were done purposely. I think they look cool. Example: shot 2 for map 1
Does this mean you'll play the WAD?

Anyway, I think it looks cool. And if you don't like it, just fix it yourself. *cool*
What do you think about the other shots?

The other shots are excellent. Although as for the purposely misaligned stairs, I don't prefer them, and while I think it would look better aligned, that won't keep me from playing it... once I get Legacy installed again. :p

I think it played relatively well, my main gripe is the lack of ammo (I ended up ditching some of the fights inorder to keep myself alive, fisting revenants isnt always fun, heh).
Also, I dont think this is necessary:
http://pages.quicksilver.net.nz/druids/bigarrow.jpg
If I were you, I would make the passage that the arrow is pointing at a little more obvious (eg add some pillar, etc)

Well, what exactly do you think is lacking? Map 02 in my opinion is superior to map 01. There is much better level design, in my opinion. The music is great isn't it (Symphony X) ? Symphony X site (http://www.symphonyx.com)
I thought there was plenty of ammo In map01, If you know where to go. *shades*
Also, has anyone played map02 or the secret level?
Planky
July 26th, 2005, 11:13 PM
Yes, I played the second level and the secret level (as I couldnt find the exit to map02... I probably walked straight passed it).
I thought there was plenty of ammo In map01, If you know where to go
Yes, thats because you made the map - so it's easy for you. Others dont have that luxury :)
lucius octavion
July 27th, 2005, 08:55 AM
So what did you think of map 02? Better than map 01?
Well, I tell you that you have to look behind gravestones to unlock the center door in the last part of map 02. Also, the exit of map 02 is... well I'm not sure you want to know, you see... well nevermind. (quote: guy from doom 3)
To find the exit to map 2 you need to shoot many demon stars and switches behind gravestones.

hey lucius. just downloaded and really like. first map was better than i thought after reading the thread here. Though Planky was right about the arrow on the floor.. dont like things like this. But all in all pretty good. As u say though, map 2 is far far better.
Good work overall, hope u make more. cheers :)

EDIT: The Map 01 and secret level architechture isn't as good as map 02. 02 is pretty good. The other
2 are decent.

I played all three of them... They´re fun to play, specially map02 and map03 since map01 is a little simplistic and chaotic (and there´s plenty of ammo to go in a rampage and kill every single thing without aiming :P).
The boss on the secret level, may it be that hitlerian cyborg?. I killed it with a few BFG shots hehe... Anyway, on to the point, map02 is, by far, the best of them. There are texture issues here and there and some areas look quite bare, but it´s real fun. The Legacy stuff is little used, I mean, there are only a few 3d floors, some water and I think that some scripts are also present. I think you could work a little bit more on the ambience and appearance of the halls as well as on the scripts to make it more inmersive and better :).
My biggest complain is that there are not many height changes, I mean, when you walk around you see almost all floors at the same height, it´s a bit Wolfensteinish.
The part I liked the most was getting out of the Cathedral in Map02 when I found an opened gate leading to an open-air area with columns ornamented with 3d floors.
I don´t know why, but I didn´t got any music.
lucius octavion
August 19th, 2005, 12:36 PM
Hmm, I dont know why you wouldn't get music. Try opening the WAD in XWE and see if the mus lumps
are there. I highly doubt it, but if they are some other kind of file (midi), change it with midi2mus.
Also, where in particular is it too bare?
BTW, thanks for your feedback.
Danimetal
August 20th, 2005, 05:00 AM
Not at all :). It´s good to see people map for Legacy.
About bareness... For example, there´s a room with two vending machines near to the red door in map02. If I remember there´s nothing in that room but some book shelves... Why not putting some pillars, a table, some 3d chairs and stuff like that in?.
Oh!. Also, I think it´s map 03, but when it starts you´re in an area for a long time hearing someone talking backwards. Well, you could use some FraggleScript cameras there to make it less boring, I mean, players tend to try to scape the square they´re in. You could use a camera to show some parts of the map while the voice is heard.

Also I am getting better at mapping now! I am more interested in modding now so I am making a mod
for jdoom (hope you guys are'nt against me for that) called Lost City II.

LOL! I can think of one.
Jdoom, Legacy, Zdoom, Vavoom, Risen3D.
Symphony X:
"Five align... It draws the final line between what is now and what should never be..." " When five join as one..."
Another one:
"Tempted by an ancient magic, the power of Five!"
"Theres no force greater dividing the fathers of Doom!"
Can you guess why Symphony X uses the word five so much? It is because the name of that album is called "five", but I have no Idea.
Lol, danimetal that cheered me up. You know my avatar basically says that I like symphony x.

Here's what I thought about each level in the order I played in:
map01: Nice gameplay -- classic DooMing. No real challenge if you find the weapons cache at the start. Textures were scary bad though. Lots of stuff misaligned and just plain mismached. Doors look kinda bleaghish when the tracks move too, especially if it's a secret door that doesn't have tracks.
map03: First part of this wasn't impressive to look at and there wasn't much to do. The last part was cool though. Only thing I'd have done differently is to make a custom version of the swastika texture and use that instead of having to stick the bricks everywhere. Then the hanging banners could also look like actual banners, more like the Heretic/HeXen ones in map02.
map02: Best looking map yet. Certain parts still had REALLY scary textures (eg. the bit with the cyberdemon). I liked the use of the transparent windows (despite Legacy making a mess of them in GL). This was the first map that presented a challenge playing on UV.
Map02 was big enough to be a couple maps. I noticed the second half of it looked a lot better than the first half. Might be worth going through the other parts and bringing them more up to that level. The 3D graveyard bits were interesting. That room with the green symbol thing was sweet! The gradiant lights in the tunnels were awesome. I don't think I've ever been so impressed with simple gradiant lights in DooM. It's worth noting that the pitch black parts of a tunnel shouldn't have torches hanging there that are lit...
The sounds were cool. I loved the SSG sounds, the demon sounds, the squish sound, etc. New door sounds would have been good though.
I didn't care about the music. I hate metal in games and I think metal sounds like crap in MIDI (even with my fancy XG synth) but I can see why you chose it, esp. for map02.
Suggestions for the future (these maps or any other similar):
more height changes like the later parts of map02
more 3D stuff (again like map02)
moving doortraks are bleaghish
doors that move up MUST be aligned horizontally...
gradient halls are neato
That Wolf3D library place is strange looking
tech textures don't mix well with gothic textures
way more texture alignment
Try adding a wave to the hanging banners, would look much cooler
the vending machine effect was cool but they looked out of place
That's all for now. It's too late to write more and I need to go read history. Map more. :D
