View Full Version : Final Deadline Set (Dec 14th 2005)
Doom_Dude
July 19th, 2005, 08:07 AM
I hate deadlines and I don't like making them, however we have been working on this project for years now and some of our team had thier maps done within the first couple months.. It's only fair to them and to everybody who has worked hard / finished levels, to have this project finished and released. On Dec 14, 2005 all maps must be on my desk and ready to roll. This will give me 1 1/2 weeks to put the wad together and have it playtested to make sure everything is cool with the wad. Dec is a busy time and I don't want to be trying to weld this thing together and be rushing as I've been there and done that with Vilecore and thats was retarded. :p
Between now and Dec there are seven maps that need to be finished and I think at least four of those will be done in time. If not then we do have at least 2 levels that we have in the works for possible insertion, which includes the Conglom map and iori's level. If we come up short, then so be it as a 27+ level wad release is still a very nice package IMHO. So the time has come to wrap this thing up and get it done. So come on guys, lets rock this mofo and get rolling. If anybody wants to make a possible replacement level then go for it, just be aware that it may not get in the final cut. I will be making at least three small, crazy maps for possible insertion just incase somebody flakes out, which includes my Lavaplant wad that I had started long ago and is 60% finished....

Should you e-mail this to the mappers who don't visit the forum regularly?
Also, what has happened with the conglom map, no recent posts in the thread, who has it right now?

Some of those guys are impossible to contact even when I had thier emails. Heh. If I can find thier emails then sure I'll message them, otherwise they're on thier own unless somebody here talks to one of them and can spread the word. Seriously I shouldn't have to chase people down. If I was a part of a project and they had a forum I would either read it or post on it and not be somplace else all bewildered about whats going on. I couldn't imagine being a part of Community Chest and not using thier forum to make sure whats happening and such. Sorry if I sound rantish. :p
Lutrov has the conglom map.

Hi, I am new to the Newdoom forums but I have been waiting for this project for so long I'd forgotten it existed! I notice some of the maps are still below 50% completion. What are you gonna do if they still aren't finished?
I think Doom Dude deserves an award for the work he's doing here!

Thanks. I'm sure that between myself and a few others we can put together enough stuff to fill the gaps if needed.

Sounds good.
Right now I'm at a point where whatever non source port specific map I get done first will go into the NDCP. I've just gotten tired of trying to figure out what's wrong with my current NDCP map. It's easy for me to work on a map that I keep adding stuff to, but when I'm just trying to figure out why Risen3D, my favorite source port, hates it, well, blah.
Right now I'm thinking that if I can't figure out anything this week, I'll just upload it and see if any of you guys can mess around with it and see what's wrong. It's been sitting on my computer long enough as it is...

Usually a good medication is just to rebuild the area that is causing errors. You should try that.

July 20th, 2005, 07:00 AM
SOmetimes getting others to test the map can be a good remedy, have you tried it with other source-ports?
Nuxius
July 20th, 2005, 07:13 AM
It works fine with every other source port I've tried except for Legacy and Risen3D. Legacy is just being Legacy, you can play it, but it looks weird in some spots. I'm not really too concerned with that. What bothers me is that Risen doesn't even think it's a level. Everytime I try to play it, it says it's "Not a valid PWAD", even though I can play it in any other source port and open it up and edit it in DB just fine. I've tried copy and pasting the entire level into a new wad, cutting parts out, all kinds of stuff to see if that would work, but I've met that error each time I try to load it in Risen.
And there's no way in hell I'm going to rebuild the entire level. :p

Our goal here is to make it playable with something such as prboom (a limit-removed standard?). Port Specific or GL errors should be largely ignored, in my opinion. I have personally added effects into my map(s) that only work in software mode, and I will not even attempt to accomodate because X port doesn't display Y properly. A standard has to be set.
Anyway, thanks for the release date, DD. I agree that it's in the best interest of both the mappers and the would-be players to finalize something.

Nuxius, maybe you can spot your problem by copy pasting half of the map to another wad and test it. Then if it causes no errors, try the other half. If it causes errors, halve it again, and I think you got the idea.

I tired to make my maps work in both GL and software ports

I'll have my map done easily by then. Just need a little more inspiration and it should be finished.

On Dec 14, 2005 all maps must be on my desk and ready to roll.
Way to go, DD. I agree with you completely that, while this is a voluntary effort on the part of the community, at some point we have to draw the line and get people to fish or cut bait.
Although I'm currently trying to get my maps done for Return to Oblivion, if the need is desperate I will chip in to get the NDCP completed by doing a third map. Particularly if the maps needed are earlier in the megawad (and therefore smaller) I ought to be able to whip together a halfway decent map in a month.

I know some other people left messages like this, and you guys prolly don't know my work too well-or you have only viewed bad examples of it, but if you need a map I can contribute. I work faster when the map to be isn't so "personal".
So yeah, if you lost anyone or any map, or a mapper is stuck and wants to turn it over to someone else to finish--I can help.

My map is finished, who can I send it to for final approval?
Also, I know that my map is scheduled to become Map31 which is fine; but I'd like to see it come up earlier in the set if somebody else drops out of the project. My only problem with Map31 is that it depends on if there's even an exit for a secret map teleport in any of the maps - otherwise it could be overlooked. However, I did agree to do a map31 and that's what I did, so whatever happens with it I'll be fine. Just letting you know if something opens up, I'd like to have my map put in it :)

Hey that's great! Send it to me at vilecoreATgmail.com (change AT to @ of course). If we can change it sometime we will, otherwise your locked in at map 31. The original plan was to not have any secret levels.... but that was mentioned before I became leader and I dunno if it was in the rules or not. heh.

Anooouu.. yo all.. I'm back.. kinda.. (formally -Ki-, I like this name better)
This move to a new place (from Nevada to Connecticut) didn't go as planed at all.. I've been gone sense June.. and just a week ago got settled and got a net connection back.. (let alone a place to hook my comp up!)
We were stuck in a hotel for two months after driving the whole way up here. every home we tried to get we kept getting out bid on.. we finally got one, but took us ages before we could move in.. Then having to spend an arm and a leg fixing this and that like water and such..
Like said.. I just got a power to hook my comp up a week ago >.<
This big mess put me fare behind in my NDCP map :( We are STILL trying to move stuff in.. right now everything is still in box's out in the garage.
Now I come on and see this deadline.. :(
It'll be a metrical if I make this...

Luck with the moving stuff. Sounds like a long dragged out dealie. :/

It is... and being called away from the comp all the time to help bring shit in thats not even yours is a pain in the ass.. Hell I don't even have a BED yet! Everyone else does! ;.;

Oh lord, you can't help the rest of the family out? Time spent on the computer or other form of entertainment should be at least second to helping out the rest of the clan, IMO. Maybe that's why you don't have a bed.
...However, this deadline IS set in stone (It'd better be, or I'm out).

Of course it's set in stone. If the others don't get thier stuff done in time, the release will go ahead and the project will just be shorter.

Not entirely true. Back when Doom II was new Tim Willits made Raven, which got him a job as level designer. Though I doubt anything made NOW could get a job at id. Especially classic Doom maps, obviously. Nice map though, Iori. :D
