I'm really desperate to hear some of Borknagar's stuff from either The Archaic Course or Quintessence (in otherwords, with Vortex). Does he still sing the clean vocals like he does in Dimmu?

If anyone had the time, is there any way any of you could send me a song for a taste of what they're like? I don't have much money, but if I like it, I'm ordering a CD as soon as possible.

Heard of them, but not their music I'm afraid. Same problem as you, so many CDs I'd love to buy. (Off the top of my head CDs I'd quite fancy now are the new Obituary album, Ulver's newest, another Behemoth CD and the new Nevermore when it comes out.) I get 2 music magazines with a free CD on them each month so very often I hear something that piques my interest enough to want to buy the album it is from, or I just want to get something by a band that I haven't heard any music by but have had some pretty good comments all round. Tis an expensive hobby music.

The site's down right now but you might swing by kerrazy-torrents.com, you might get lucky. I always thought vortex was a pretty mediocre singer, I think picking up vintersorg (cool name) really helped the band, but to each his own. I can't really take dimmu seriously anymore, Negura Bunget, Graveland, Nokturnal Mortum, Emperor and others mop the floor with them.

Err.. (unasked for opinions abound) if you like borknagar you should cast about for stuff by limbonic art (really the best symphonic black band ever) or tvangeste (russian, and they use real strings as well as keys).

You really caught my attention with that. I definitely favor real strings over keys. That's why I love Rhapsody.

You ever listen to Haggard? They're more of a small orchestra than a metal band; they had something like 20 or 21 members at their largest. Couple of classical singers, a small string section, woodwinds, percussion and the like all mixed in with a death metal band. What you end up with is some really unbelievably good stuff.
