View Full Version : Why I choose DooM Legacy...

So, if you are a first time visitor, or maybe even a long time player, you may ask yourself "Why should I stick with DooM when there are newer games available?". Well, here is my essay on the matter *drunk*

I first started playing DooM for one reason.... It was cheap! No other game really existed on home consoles (PSX) that could easily run a Player~vs~Player game that could be run through the PSX link cable. The only other option for PvP, was to go to computers, which were quite a bit more expensive at that time for anything quality. Also, to run DooM on a PC back then was even worse because you not only needed the PC's, you also needed to manage to get them to network (not easy for a newb), and then you STILL were stuck with a stupid Keyboard control. The few ways to emulate a keyboard with a joypad (*cough* Gravis GRiP *cough*) really worked pretty shotty. It just wasn't feasible.

So, I managed to get a buddy with a PSX and 2 copies of DooM (which are STILL selling for like $25+ a copy used), and have at it. After 5 mins, I knew I would be addicted to this game!!! Immediately the head to head competition was uncompareable. Not only was the action smooth, it was interesting, and you could really use some serious strategy in hunting people down.

So that was about 1997ish... so lets Fast forward [>>] about 8 years to present day. Now computers have gone down hill in price BIG time. For that same $300 PSX and $50 copy of DooM, you could buy a pretty nice little setup on PC's (well, for a tad more if you want new stuff from Dell hahaha). Also, Networking is more simple on XP than it has ever been...

OH No!! Online Games! Lookout!!! *plop* *bawl*

Whew, that was a close one! My buddy didn't make it though *what* Anyway, Online games LOOKED to be a great solution to finding some challenging opponents, but they had HUGE problems! First I tried one of those *waves hello with his sword and shield* MMORPG thingys (Asheron's Call to be exact). I wish I DIDN'T take the PvP server. Hacking, Gearing, Duping, Account Theft, and just down right disgustingly cheap gameplay (like finding every little glitch to tweak up your guy or log off when you get into trouble). I guess, out of the 1000 some people logged in, I DID like about 3 of them though grrrrrr..... Then, through the wonderous "great" next month patches, everything that was cool and you tried to adjust too, would get patched and all screwed up next month, because of some morons playing against computer controlled enemies couldn't pay their subscriptions fast enough to good ole Microsoft (9/10ths of the players were "carebear"... not PvP). :( Pretty sad when people start using macros to keep their characters logged in to increase player level.

So, Then I took a brief break to try Delta Force 2 and Red Faction. FINALLY!! Some serious PVP. Well, the controlls could have been better, but I could probably have fixed that myself. Lag isn't too bad with DSL. I'm competitiv......WHAT!!! How is that guy floating in mid air, and shooting me through walls!!!! G-D-it! Not this again! This game is 10 years old... and nobody even likes it! BLAHHHHH Where is my computer copys of DooM??

WHOAAA... what is this? DooM Legacy! Looks cool... let's install it!!
*laugh* *rofl* YES!!!! OMG!!!! DooM x 10!!!!

Omg!! DooM Builder? Wad Author? WinTex!! ...oops, guess not, WinTex wont run on Patched XP hehe, I'll put it on my 98 machine hehe.

Alright, I can FINALLY get rid of those megaspheres on Dead Simple and start using my Gatlin!!

Anyway, you can understand now my simple joy with a simple, wholesome, FUN game like DooM ][, and you HAVE to give major major props to all those hard working gurus at DooM Legacy. Really guys, the gaming community owes you a BIG one!

I remember buying one of those 500 level deathmatch CD's, you know where they put the deceptive picture on the back making DooM look like there are all sorts of cool graphics and lighting effects available. Yeah right... but the CD was pretty good. Legacy actually MAKES it have all those good graphics (even though I wuss out and just run software mode hehe). Anyway, I'm so impressed with Legacy, I can hardly contain myself, and play DooM almost as much as I use to when I had the PSX and a roommate hehe.

Anyway, there ARE games like quake available now, and the New DooM3, but I cant even install that with my old PC... and I don't feel like a new one just to run a suped up graphical version of DooM, that I can't even be sure will be as fun. I'd rather buy a Big Screen TV for my old version of DooM!! Also, other games really don't have the weapons down good. DooM really takes it home when you start talking about Plasma vs DoubleBarrel vs Rocket vs Chaingun.

And, I am NEVER going to go to another game ever again!! (Well, not until they start using 3D goggles and convert DooM to that on faster machines with super resolutions hehe). I think I AM going to develop my own website and master DM levels though. I wish I could afford to run my own server. Maybe someday ;) (I'd like to start my own web design company... so then I'll run game servers and charge for that hehe).

Hope my story entertained you, maybe I'll write some about my ingame action some day, or upload a demo hehe !!

mine's a little different:

i remember finding my dad's copy of the original doom ii:

putting it on my comp, trying it out, getting the bejesus scared out of me

that's what i remember: i have scraps of memory sitting on my dad's lap, at his desk, killing zombies...

more recently, about 1 year ago, i bought doom collectors edition since i couldn't live on just one episode of doom 1. totally loved it, and the new 640x480 resolution was way better than 320x200.

took it to a lan party, got all my friends hooked on doom.

a few months back: downloaded legacy, stumbled upon the great community at newdoom. they helped me get started mapping and making dehacked patches. now my life with doom is better than ever, and me and a friend are planning to release a 9-map episode for DOOM. watch for it soon, somewhere

I found Doom95, and i wondered what it was...

Anyways, I fisrt played Doom 2 on the PC on a windows 95, on the easiest difficulty, i'm too young to die... well, i was 6!

Anyways, i couldnt get far and I got beat down by the weakest monsters... And then I found assorted floppys that contained Doom v1.2 Registered, and I asked my dad if I could have them, he said yes, he doesn't play the game anymore (He used to play it all the time).

So, I installed Doom and checked it out, I also got doom for the Playstation and tried that out. it was interesting. Seemed kind of like legacy with those colored lights and transparent walls.

But now, I play on Ultra-Violence, Co-Op, DM, CTF, etc. No monsters can beat me down because I know all the features of every gun and all the monsters strengths and weaknesses. And I also, have great aim...

but my friend says hes better than me at doom, but he doesn't know the difference between waiting for a player in the shadows and camping... If he sees me hiding behind a wall waiting for him, he'll call me a camper. Without him getting mad, I gotta be the worst player ever, and that means i gotta lose and I cant do the tricks the pros can do.

The trick I always found, is that to get REALLY good competition in games, you have to sort of "train" your gimpy friends to be able to keep up. Then from time to time they will even surprise you with a new talent, or maybe even surpass you (when they are suppose to show you what THEY do hahaha).

Laying in the weeds is typically not the best thing to do in DooM though, unless you are really low in health and/or weapons and your opponent is strong. Then, you want to build up.

Anyway, I'll start a new "Deathmatch Tactics" thread, since that is a different topic. I actually like reading these stories about how people get started. I didn't realize that there is this whole new crowd of youngsters coming up in the ranks!!! (I'm 32 years old :o) I'm glad to see it though. I hate when people know what Halo is, but not DooM :(

Me too, i hate that.

Also, when poeple say doom sucks because it has 2d sprites, low resolution, and 8bit color.

The graphics may suck to them, but the gameplay doesn't

oh man, i hate when people who are really into games and shooters know what doom3 is and half-life, but i ask if they've played the original doom and they go, "what's that?"

out of all my gamer friends who had never played doom, i could only get one hooked, and now he is a legacy/doomsday gamer.

I've got to visit here more often hehe :)

Also, when poeple say doom sucks because it has 2d sprites, low resolution, and 8bit color.

You know, most of the REALLY fun games out there have crappy graphics. Archon was great on the NES, as was TechmoBowl and SuperTechmobowl on the SNES. Heck, even some of the old tank games on the Atari were great. And, JUST to prove it, look at all of those little $20 joystick games that are out now.

Doom's Legacy graphics with the 3d turned on with lighting and transparencies is AWESOME, I've never seen the game look so good.

Also, the FPS's out there with better graphics usually mess crap up (like weapon balance, map design, player control and speed)!! The ONLY other FPS I liked much is Delta Force 2... and you almost need 10 guys to make that fun because the levels are so big. (well, you have to play that game to understand, it is really fun online if you can get rid of the cheaters).

Really, the only GREAT game that I can think of with awesome graphics AND still great gameplay is the series of Grand Theft Auto and also probably Gran Turismo 3 & 4. Those games really take advantage of great graphics, and don't lose out on the fun factor.

Most of the other games with good graphics make me feel like I should just go light a sparkler and twirl it around. It would burn out my retnas more slowly that way hahahaha.

I choose DooM Legacy & jDoom because ZDoom is a poor compromise. I started playing Doom when I first rented it along with Duke Nuke'm and Quake for N64. Been hooked ever since. :)

I remember the first time i saw Doom, around 1995. My dad brought it home but it wouldn't run on my old 286... i first saw it at his office, it looked awesome! So much better than Wolfenstein 3D. When I finally got a 486, i became addicted. It was Doom 2 and I'd play late at night, i didn't have a soundcard but the darkness and the pc-squeaker sounds were enough to set the mood.

A few years later, with a better PC, i found modern ports like Doom Legacy and ZDoom. Being able to play via internet is so cool! I didn't know about deathmatches until then, it's awesome! I prefer playing coop though.

Doom never gets old. Right now i'm trying to play all the way through in UV with no cheating, i'm at E3M2. I want someone to play coop with me, but i'm still to show Doom to my friends (go figure, they don't know it!). My girlfriend would play, but i'm sure she'd have nightmares for many nights afterwards... just like i used to, not so long ago... with the growls of the patrolling Imps, doors opening and closing behind the walls, and the horrendous visage of a revenant strafing from behind a pillar in the darkness and firing rockets that suddenly were in your face and "aaargh!!"...

Got shareware DooM v1.1 on a couple of floppies in 1995. My younger brother brought them home from a garage sale. Instant addiction! Orders of magnitude more interesting than Wolfenstein 3D. Also got me into mapping and programming. :D

i started really really early, like 3 years old or something. my babysitter had a son who liked it alot, so id just end up watching him play it most of the time.

then came the first computer, which my parents bought when i was four, it came with this demodisc called the JLMcd, which had shareware doom on itr. i played it for about a year then stopped, and started playig something else which my dad brought home: duke nukem. noone worried about turning adault mode off, i already knew about blood, that creatures had it inside them, and i was too young to worry about the adult bits. a year or two later i found the JLMcd again, by now i was seven and i still hadnt finished shareware doom properly, so i started a new game in a higher difficulty level abd instantly got re-hooked.

a year later i got another computer, Quake2 had come out by then and i had a demo disc for it. i thought the 3D graphics were the most amazing things i had ever seen! i was re-hooked onto another one of ids creations. then came Renagede, which i bought straight away, being pleased with the C&C games already, i bought it when it was thought as graphically enhanced, this got me off diablo 2 and roleplay games and back onto the FPS genre. later that year i got Half-life, with the high definition pack. it was amazing! such a compelling storyline. in notime i was jumping around xen and firing rockets at nilianth, i was better at FPSs now so the fun didnt last as long.

about a year later, 2 years ago, i bought doom collectors edition and playe through the, untill then, unrevealed levels of episodes 2 and 3, and the bonus episode. like halflife, my fun ended quickly. i finished it too fast and too often. a year later, which is coming to a year ago, i find "doom legacy" and an editor called "DEEPsea", im instantly into editing. doom3 comes out this year, i buy it instantly but have to wait 4 months untill i can actually play it (i had to wait for my fathers laptop to arrive with XP) i finish it in 2 days. then go back to legacy...

whooh, long story. BTW im only 13, but that story probably makes me look really old.

for me the doom graphics totally rocked. then i downloaded the quake demo and fell in love with deathmatch again. recently i picked up quake 2 for my linux box but it was a bit boring since i have to play it windowed, in low resolutions. the fx suck on linux.

doom 3 i got for christmas in 2004 from Sexi Waffles, then i had to build my own comp to play it. totally wrecked my install, i should fix that soon. :-D
