ok so when i boot my computer my fan sounds ok, not too loud. but after about 30 minutes to an hour of use, it gets to a high pitched whine that makes me want to kill myself. now ive checked my bios and cant seem to find any setting to make it softer or slower, are there any programs i can download to fix this problem? any advice would be great.

/me hugs his Cool'n'Quiet CPU with auto adjusting fan speed
Well if there's nothing in the BIOS to adjust fan speed there isn't likely going to be any program that will be able to. Might just have to buy a new fan.

after a little more experimentation ive found that the fan only gets ridiculous when i play games, even though its games like counter strike which my cpu can handle easily. btw my processor is 3.0 GHz LGA775. maybe i do need a new fan. shit. still suggestions are welcome :)

I would say the same, new fan is in order. The bearings are going out.

yeah, fan speeds up when you load any game, because it does make the comp hotter, no matter how simple the game - you shud hear mine when i play doom! it does sound like you need a new fan

What Looney said. The bearings in the fan went out in my last computer, and it would make this horrid sound. I could occasionally get rid of the sound by opening my tower and stopping the fan by putting my finger on it...it would usually stop screeching when it span back up. For awhile, anyway. This was only a quick fix, however, which made the problem more bearable until I got a new fan.

Yeah, get a new one, they're not that expensive...a friend of mine bought one for £10...
