Ive always thought that Doomsday is the best, and i still think that....
However, I wonder what does all the other sourceports offer that Doomsday cant?

Basically its really just 3d floors and slopes, and for Doom the more complex ACS scripting(which will be added in hawthorn I think)

Doesn't Doomsday support 3D floors, though? Other than that, slopes and scripting. ZDoom and Legacy have scripting and ZDoom has slopes.

Not a true 3D floor (well as true as it can get in a 2.5D engine). Just a hack like Zdoom.

Which one has the best graphics/models?
(Jdoom I assume)

Definately jDooM :D

Yes jDoom is the best but why does some people play Legacy or ZDoom...?

ZDoom,Skulltag, Edge, and Risen3d are all good ports. Each with something to offer.
I frankly can't understand why people need to choose favorite ports.
*idea* just use them all.

Still... none with online play for their mac versions... *cry* *drinky* *cry* *bug*

I use ZDooM when I feel really 'retro' because it can use the FM chip to play the old DOS midi music, but that's pretty much the only time I use anything other than Doomsday. I like Playstation DooM best anyway and Doomsday achieves a much closer feel to it because of the lighting effects and stuff. And the smart texture filtering just looks damn sexy. XD

DistantJ - If you enjoy the "retro-pixelated-look" bring down the Doomsday console and enter lowres
(Optional - set your resolution to 320x200 and disable models/particles etc for the "complete experience") :)
BTW I'm sure there is a sound driver somewhere on the net that allows you to use the FM sound chip in all apps under XP. You can then tell Doomsday to use that sound driver to get the same sound as in Zdoom.
Still... none with online play for their mac versions...
Doomsday 1.8.7 cometh soon...

What other source ports support beyond Doomsday... -- Strife! ;)
Well, okay - that's even beyond DOOM (I/II). :o

Zdoom can do crazy things if you have the time and ability to implement them

Well no, but the primary aim of it was never to look good. For everything, there is a reason ;)

I don't think so. While other source-ports remain stagnant and archaic, Doomsday will continue to advance rapidly. Pfffft, Doomsday is the best. Swear allegiance to Doomsday mortal*cool*

Fanboyism for individual ports is possibly the greatest single threat to the future of the Doom community. It leads to pointless "wars" and overall disenchantment.

Amen to that. it's people like him who are bringing us down and these arguments about which port is best are just plain pathetic outright. It's a matter of opinions people, no need to take it personally.
Personally I map for ZDoom, play wads for it too. Used to map for Legacy and went to ZDoom but I still use legacy for any wads I find for it (thanks to DLW that's not a problem :)) I play Doomsday on occasion although I haven't found much in the way of Doomsday only wads which actually take full advantage of it's features and not just the pretty lights. EDGE comes in handy for it's abundance of weapon mods but I don't play that much either, still good though.

Damn, you guys or galls are too serious. *sick* I'm not one for Doom in its pixalated splendor. Pffft, take a chill-pill. *cool*

well doomsday isnt as good in the modding aspect but hawthorn will bring slopes better scripting shaders md3 support and might bring 3d floors and its own map format

I've never tried to mod for Doomsday, but I do enjoy playing mods for it. I mainly only mod for Legacy, but I play maps for almost all the source-ports. If i chose one, then I would be limiting the number of maps I could play.

It is new version of Doomsday , and you wont see it soon..
Md3 with shaders are something that makes models editable :)
EDIT: Doomsday is most moddable source port..
Others are offering better mapping but not modding ..
Note that legacy doesnt use separate libraries for games , so you must release whole library to mod it..
Then again jDoom libraries are often compatible with only version and they are still not so clear..
I would love Doom ported to Q3 engine *whatever*

Shaders (in the Quake3 respect) are textures that are applied overtop of the base texture, allowing for shininess. You might be a bit confused, as models are already editable...

Again, you might be a little confused. While Doomsday does have the distinct advantage of having the Doom64 TC credited to its engine, that is only one mod. Other ports all have different Mods for them (Mods being TCs or PCs I presume).
Note that legacy doesnt use separate libraries for games , so you must release whole library to mod it..
Legacy doesn't use any libraries for gametypes - all are available within the EXE with no special libraries needed for game definition. Libs may be cleaner, but that's not the point.

Shaders: No longer messing with textures, and finally choosing usage of alpha , I really know what they are ( they arent textures , but scripts, setting up textures and so )..
Also it is much easier to do fog with fogparm {r, g b,} <distance> , than like in legacy with putting lot of diffirently transparent brushes over them ..
Most moddable is really doomsday , you can set up everything in ded files and make your own library, libraries work greatly in Q2 , because they are compatible with most ports and versions ( count of mods is really something else , note that deds can do much better work than dehacked files and they can add stuff without replacing original )
I use Legacy for LAN plays ( fun for 30 mins before signal segment voilation comes ) , and Doomsday mainly for Hexen/Heretic ..
From other source ports there is only one which interest me , and it is Vavoom..
I dont have anything agains other ports , but i dont use them..
One big plus: you can do easily player skins :P
Note: I never saw reason modding Doom , classic is classic and it was (and still is) called best game ever...
EDIT: alphaGen lightingSpecular looks better and more realistic than shiny textures
