On a scale from 0 to 10, how scary did you think Doom3 was? I gave it about a 7. It was spooky, but nothing crap-your-pants scary.

Meh.

I never found the game truly scary. I only got a few tense moments and the occasional jump but nothing 'scary'. It got boring after the first few levels. I knew when something would happen roughly and what it would involve. The imps appearing out of hidden wall compartments (what's the deal there?) and various monsters teleporting in both behind and in front of me at the same time got very boring very quickly. It was just as predictable as your average teen horror film. At least the gameplay was nice and refreshing with the old Doom feel. Though I did expect a little more for today's standards. Going around killing everything in 1 hit with the shotgun was pretty naff.

I'd say that if they had used more unique ways to bring the monsters into the fight, like how they introduced the imp and pinky rather than all this wall chamber and teleprt crap, I would have had more fun. It would have been less expected and I would never have looked at balconies or dark gaps betweeen pipes the same way again. Some people say it's all about the monsters you don't see, but in the case of this game it never worked out because I was always expecting the monsters to teleport in or whatever if I picked up a certain item. Just looking at the area you could tell where they would come from.

Overall: The game could have been a heck of a lot more than what it is. I'm not picking up the expansion anytime soon that's for sure. The SSG can't be justified with just a few new monsters which take just a little more damage before they die. I'll stick to classic Doom.

not really scary. Quake (the first) was much scarier.

One word: Shambler.

If Doom 3 had more monsters like that it would be more worth playing.

I found it scary. All the things sneaking up behind you never failed to scare me. The imps became a little predictable. It was like "Oh no, something's spawning in... oh, it's just an imp." *BANG*

I didn't find Doom3 too scary too often, other than an occasional twitch or a shiver. However, that didn't cripple any gameplay experience for me. So there's not alot of scares, there's still alot of action.

The fact that it wasn't too scary disappointed me a little but it won't stop me from picking up any new expansions/sequels.

I voted "yes". My computer is in my dark basement, and I use headphones, so it was a nice experience...

The most scary moment was when the invasion begun and you met the first monster.
Also loved the introduction of the mancubus, but besides that there was nothing really scary anymore. (So far cause I haven't reached Hell yet.)

Well, you're in for a treat. The Hell level is cool. I can't say if it really scared me so much as it was just kinda spooky. It just depends on the type of player. But I won't spoil anything. ;)

Aye mate! Shambler is the spirit of Quake!

Too bad that the spirit of DooM3 is some stupid imp... I too was really dissapointed to the level design.

Well actually I have seen the beginning of the Hell level at my friend's house but that's it. It looked really cool so I can't wait till I get there myself.
The bad thing is that I can only play Doom3 when I'm at my mothers house cause this pc can't run it. :(

If you have an Xbox, you could get that version. It's really good, even compared to the PC version.

That's not an option either. :( But tomorrow I'm able to play it again so I have a chance to catch up. *thumbs*

Too many cheap scare tactics. All the wandering in the dark at night trying to stay alive did make me paranoid eventually though. :D Especially in Delta Labs where the soldiers were going insane.

Yeah you're right. I only play Doom3 at night and for several hours so it makes you paranoid indeed. I used to think singleplayer was relaxing but in Doom3, deathmatch is like a break for me. :)

I think the game is definitely scary. At least the scariest game I ever played. Strangely enough, it's the generic zombies that never fail to make me jump.

I think the lighting (or the lack of it) and the ambient sounds create an atmosphere that should be creepy enough to at least make anyone with a healthy dose of imagination feel unconfortable. Though I must agree that the spawn-imp-trick did get a bit old after a while.

I guess being a mapper for classic DooM takes away part of the fun.

Undying is still a lot scarier than DooM 3 for me. You never knew when some howlers were going to attack you. Maybe if DooM3 would've been more difficult...

I loved that game. I should play it again some time.:D And I agree with you on the scare factor Fatal. It's much better.:)

Yeah, I liked undying, because it has so much variety for a basic fps game. You have spells, real life weapons, fantasy weapons and the levels are just thriving with fantasy. Also, Undying puts you to find the horrors (you'll have to use a skill to see some pretty spooky stuff at certain places), unlike in doom 3, where the "horrors" find you.
Undying is really near prefect for my taste

Doom3 was definately scary the first time I played it, but afterwards I got bored quite quickly. The replay value of the game is bad, only if you play it and then lock it away for 1 year and then play it again it's worth it.
Doom3 is a good game nonetheless but for those who look for a different and changing gameplay go look for a different game;)

I played it through while stoned+5.1 headphones+in the dark. THAT is fear. lol

Some parts I almost had to stop. (mind you: The weed made you hear every little background noise, as well as made you feel as if it were real)

It was a bit scary, but not much. But that's just me; I've played System Shock 2 and the original Thief several times and these two games kinda immunize you against fear from Zombies. Yes, System Shock 1 and 2 are DAMN SCARY, even though SS1 has only slightly better graphics than the original Doom.

It was a bit scary?!? it was freaky for the zombies, the beginning was so scary, now it still gets me spooked. after u go to Administration onward, it gets more and more predictable, and not scary nemore, good game tho, one of the scariest i ever played

As I said, after playing both System Shock games more than once, mere zombies just don't scare you.

That said, Doom 3's atmosphere was very creepy and dark. It scared me much more than the Zombies themselves.

The monsters itself didn't scare me. The monsters outside your reach were the scary stuff, like imp jumping towards you, and in the last second you'll see that there's a glass between. Or you see a shadow on a wall or floor, only to see that an imp is behind a window blocking the light. That was somewhat intense for me, but there were only couple of places where such things happened.

For me, the Zombies lost much of their scaryness after I found the Chainsaw. Though hearing them without seeing them still makes me nervous somehow. As do the Cherubs.

When I first played Doom 3 it was a bit scary / atmospheric. I guess I got immune to D3's scare factor as Resurrection Of Evil didn't make me jump at all. I think having the double barrel brought back that olde Doom II feeling and I dug the expansion so much I didn't have time to be freaked. :p

Ive never really got scard before by any game then i played doom3 and i actually had to put down the contoller heh ...and walk away and when the hell lvls started the vision of hell stayed with me for a few days i havent jumped so much in a game since half-lifes head crabs fell thru the ceiling !

its only scary at the beginning when its all pitch black (i got a dark monitor, so i gotta use the flashlight ALOT) and when i hear them, just what DoomedAce said, i get nervous, then when they strike, i jump, but my reflexes just tell me to turn to where i was hit and shoot the crap out of it, other than that, when u open doors and see an imp about to leap, its very predictable after that (the second or third time)
not scary at all now once i just played yesterday... it actually got a little boring

I've played it with the lights off and the surround sound on. Crawling around in the dark, hearing voices and machine noises and the sound of some creature off in the darkness got pretty unnerving at times under those circumstances.

doom 3 was good, but not half as scary as the first games. most likely it was the addition of footsteps. for example, in e1m4 in the original, a pinky demon could sneak up behind u without hearing it. much scarier to play doom 3 on mute.

That´s a fun way of seeing it :). I´ve always considered sound and music as important as visuals to get a scary experience... That´s why I consider SIlent Hill (the first) one of the most scariest games ever (please read, "I consider"). Though it´s visuals are now dated (there´s not precisely a lot of detail there!!), the combination of them with the uber-strange music and noises and the stuffed radio static made the enviromnents much more haunting. If only its flashlight had batteries it would have been an unplayable game.

You know I played doom3, beat it, it definitely gave me some cold chills in some parts.
then I played halflife2, which was a pretty good game, beat it.
then went back and played doom3, this time around I sent the communication message out, this gave the game a bit of a different role or route to take in the game."you have a choice"
also it blew halflife2 outta the water. difficulty, gore and visibly wise. heh

also if you get a chance, run doom3 @1600x1200 ;) looks freaking real.

The first time I played D3 I chose to send it, but the next time I plan to keep it right where it is, just to see what happens. Don't spoil it now! ;)
