Go to www.codeimp.com and get Doom Builder and it's tutorial pdf file.

Follow the tutorial to learn all the basics from original Doom. If you're working on any source port, look at it's site for tutorials on editing for then.

Both excellent suggestions. Doombuilder is, by far one of the best editors ever, very powerful with lots of great tools, and it's free.

Most would suggest that you learn by making regular Doom2 maps that will run in any port, but this may not be best. ZDoom seems the most advanced and popular port. If you start just learning the basic rules, it becomes very difficult to step into something that is so different. However, if you learn about all the extras that ZDoom has to offer while learning the basics, you will be much better off as a mapper in the long run.

It's like learning to drive a stick instead of an automatic. If you can drive a stick - you can drive anything. If you learn with an automatic, it will take a lot more effort to get past that.

That analogy is somewhat true, though it can also work the other way; if you become too dependent on zdoom features early on, you might find it harder to work without them.
It's more like trying to drive an entire F1 race before you've taken any driving lessons. You may technically learn much more by doing so, but it's a lot more work and doesn't necessarily teach you what you need to know to just drive down to the shops.

Having said that, zdoom is very popular and as good a port as any to start off with, although look around at the many different engines available(Zdoom, Legacy, Doomsday, EDGE, Vavoom, PrBoom, Risen3D etc. etc.) and pick one that looks most interesting to you, and has all the features that you want to use in your map(s). But don't feel you need to confine yourself to that one port either.
