As most of you know he was the main developer of Doom and Quake (+ Heretic/Hexen.) Here is a VERY interesting story on what happened after John left Id, and his hardships being a developer with his own company.

I've seen this... I personally think that Romero should sit down and remake Daikatana as a totally different kind of game. The basic elements of the story are nice, but very badly done in the game.

Maybe a game that mixes various game types. Like stealth action, adventure, fps and others.

Are you talking about DeusEx?

I actualy read all 30 somthing pages of it, really circumstances and inexperience made it almost impossible to make Daikatana the game they intended it to be, much less in the seven month period they promised with two other gaming projects going on at the same time. The artists and employees were inexperienced with the mechanics of games and the process (For example the artist who made the arrow in 1300 pixle format) and since romero gave out so much information at the start the public grew bitter and rumors began to spread: one developer said "Its hard to make a game that everyone says is going to suck" and basically sums up the problems with debelopment. I dont know if you read this far but around 92 of his 100 employees quit leaving him in a real bind. The whole thing was a mess but Its a very interesting story and certanly a learning experience.

I'm not talking about Deus EX.

I'm talking about some ideas that ocurred to me sometime ago. But it is a fact that the inexperience of the team killed the game.

Some say that Romero should have never left Id but reading the article makes you think about it... Ion Storm has produced great games to date (at least Deus Ex was) but one can help but to compare the success of its games to Doom.
John Romero is now an historical character in gaming and thus, he will be compared to his greatest success each time he tries to top it.

Daikatana was pretty fun (patched). Also I recently read that you can get a better game out of Daikatana if you play it as a coop game by yourself because that eliminates the dumb sidekicks. :p

exactly my thought, he wanted to get too far and too fast. hence the team where artists had no clue how big an arrow tip should be, and the engine getting messed up by 5 different programmers... i read that story, it's interesting how it should have been and what went wrong.

Reaffirms my opinion that id's most vital designer in those days was Sandy Petersen.

So Daikatana was a failure. Who cares, 'coz even the very best of the best have their failure or two. John Wayne was in The Conquerer, George Lucas made Howard the Duck, I'm sure you can come-up with other examples.

If he want's to try his hand at making a new video-game (or re-creating Daikatana, which would seem reasonably doubtful) I'm sure that he is more than capable. But even if he doesn't care to make any new games, his legacy in the annuals of video-games is secure.

Well said, well said, but i hope that he will care to make new games.
