View Full Version : The all New non-copyrighted stuff JxUI
picklebro
March 9th, 2005, 09:21 PM
This is a thread I'm beginning to discuss artwork related to a brand new JxUI pack that is completely copyright material free. I have begun and I'm trying to get a category on the JDTP forum on jfiles.org to post my art as I get done. I have the basic cleric life gem and chain complete currently.
If anyone else would like to contribute to the JxUI feel free. I don't really have any rules other than I don't want to be duplicating something. Other than that, if you disagree with me or someone else about how an item should look, that's fine - simply make your own version. When its time to release the final product we'll figure something out then.
Be very careful when naming your assets as the name has to exactly match the lump data in the hexen wad file. I'll provide names below. If you decide to make a 2nd version of something someone already made I reccomend putting your name on the file using an underscore. For instance if you'd made ARTIBLST already and I thought I could do better, I would simply make my file PICKLEBRO_ARTIBLST or ARTIBLST_PICKLEBRO.
Here is a mostly complete List of asset names - I'll add names as I figure them out/rediscover them.

This project is going to take a long time - I have no doubt about it, but it will be rewarding - I look forward to the talented artists in our community stepping forward - if not I'll keep plugging along. :)
By the way, when you create an asset and you want to see how it looks in-game, you can type the code (not case-sensitive) SHERLOCK and INDIANA to look at all the inventory items. The only ones you can't see are the weapon pieces - you have to find them to get them added to the HUD.

Hey Bud - I just saw your textures at jfiles - very nice work - glad to see some proper hi-res textures for a change. Look forward to your future work - Thx for uploading your work so far.

Thanks for acting on this quickly. Everytime copyright material is used it endangers not only this site but the entire project.
If you get enough done it may be worth combining our work - it won't be for a while yet but we can probably work something out when I have some free time - then it can be hosted on Slidespace for free.

Thank you, Slide! By the way - for those interested you can go to http://forums.jfiles.org/ and click on JDTP up top, and then when you get to the JDTP forums, click on JXUI.
I have completed and uploaded the life chains and gems (8 gems per class, 1 chain per class).
Be sure to post comments and check around in the jfiles forums. Also jfiles.org has a great one-stop shop for all the official texture/model/music packs.

UPDATE: More items continue to be uploaded. Some items are borrowed with permission from their authors. The fonts are done (borrowed actually from Jhui and Nephil's Jxui) but I will not be uploading them as it would be time consuming to upload each letter.
*NOTE*
I accidentally uploaded 2 items that I will be replacing but I don't have rights to delete files from the album. For instance, ARTIATLP has a secondary item with the same name in the gallery that looks a lot better, too. Just thought I'd let you know. Hopefully that won't happen again. The other one is ARTIBMAN but I don't have its replacement posted yet.

Looking good there picklebro.

March 11th, 2005, 07:21 AM
Thank you!
I don't know how many people know this - but if you were to download these file and name them the titles I have given them in the album and put them in /data/jhexen/patches you can see them in-game as they are being created without waiting for the entire pack to be released.

*UPDATE* All puzzle inventory items now complete - this does not include the HUD weapon pieces that show up as you collect them. I have not yet begun work on that.
I still have several standard inventory items to complete.
Dunkler
March 11th, 2005, 11:30 AM
i tried to download some textures and hud pics..saved them as png into Data\jhexen\patches but it does not load them. The title pic from you in the patches directory works fine.I named them as you named them on the page too. I wonder why it doesnt work
picklebro
March 11th, 2005, 11:42 AM
hmm...did you use the cheatcodes so you could see the items? Most of the work I've done other than the life gems/chains are items that you have to pick up to view... the cheatcode indiana shows all standard inventory items and the cheatcode sherlock shows all puzzle items.
Also make sure you clicked on the item so you got the full version before you saved - the thumbnail might actually not be a .png
Dunkler
March 11th, 2005, 11:57 AM
I downloaded the chains so i didnt need any cheatcodes..the fonts doesnt work either..the only thing that works is the title picture :(
picklebro
March 11th, 2005, 12:31 PM
Now that is wierd-anyone else have suggestions?
*EDIT - UPDATE*
Dunkler, I tried it out - I deleted ARTISKLL from my Patches directory and then I tried the thumbnail from the website and it worked. So I overwrote it with the larger size and it worked too!
I'm going to guess you are saving it to the wrong folder. Here is my path:
X:\DoomsDay\Data\jHexen\Patches
(Where X represents my drive letter and Doomsday is the folder I have the engine installed in)
PS.
The other possibility is if you did not download all the chains you may not be using the ones you have downloaded. Certain chains (specific to class)/gems (not sure how Hexen chooses what gem) are loaded at certain times. Try an inventory item and see if it works - if it does, then try downloading all the chains.

*update* ALL inventory and puzzle items complete!
Ton80
March 12th, 2005, 03:53 AM
Are you also doing the items that show up in the automap? Don't forget about that HUD part.
picklebro
March 12th, 2005, 05:09 AM
most HUD items complete - won't be uploading all of them for a bit mussssst sleeeeeep...but here ya go for a peek: http://forums.jfiles.org/album_pic.php?pic_id=659
By the way, found an interesting bug in either Hexen or doomsday. I confirmed this is not related to the patches. If you go choose multiplayer, and choose a class other than Fighter as your class it will still load the sword puzzle HUD picture and will cause your items to look screwy unless you momentarily choose fighter and then go back to your class.
*EDIT*
Oh..and thank you Ton80 for telling me where those items were located - I've been pulling my hair out trying to find where in the HUD they were at. I haven't begun them, but they will be on my list.

lol - awesome - also peepz...I didn't upload EVERYTHING from the HUD but I have uploaded enough so when you first start the game the entire HUD shows up - I am not going to upload all the weapons slot pieces - I'll just release them as part of the pack as there are 13 of them...they are done though.
**UPDATE** 1 key done - the emerald key from Winnowing Hall: http://forums.jfiles.org/album_pic.php?pic_id=696

***UPDATE*** ALL keys done and uploaded - ARMSLOT2 replacement uploaded (glitch in old one) and KEYBAR replacement uploaded (slots were misaligned in old one causing some overlapping).
At this point, folks...I believe I have all HUD pics done. Now I turn my attention to the menu. If anyone finds something I've not done, or notices something wrong with one of my graphics let me know.

Nice titlepic - but the sky and the outline of the figure could do with being more hi-res - same with the orb/light that the figure is holding - also a couple of logos ( raven and id - needed to make it more like the original - you could use the ones in your credits pic - it just looks a bit bare and empty in the lower part otherwise- beyond heretic too maybe)- thx for all your recent work - some good stuff.
picklebro
March 14th, 2005, 10:40 PM
I agree about the hi-res bit - here is a hi-res copy: http://forums.jfiles.org/album_pic.php?pic_id=730
RE: the logos...the original lump file did not contain the logos, they were on the box scan that you may have been used to from the first jxui that Nephil started a long time ago. I will not be adding logos since they appear on the credits screen.

Picklebro, Doomsday doesn't read grayscale mode images. You'll need to change the INTERPIC to either indexed or RGB. It's causing a "Segmentation Error" for me.

RE: the logos...the original lump file did not contain the logos, they were on the box scan that you may have been used to from the first jxui that Nephil started a long time ago. I will not be adding logos since they appear on the credits screen.
that hexen-logo is based off a hexen2 wall paper that took it right out of hexen2 (it's /gfx/menu/conback.lmp in pak0.pak for anyone who cares or you can see it here (http://www.3dgamers.com/games/hexen2/)) I know that because I turned it into a png for the main menu of jhexen/doomsday some time ago can't find the wallpaper anymore though
btw jfiles works for me
picklebro
March 15th, 2005, 01:20 PM
Clarification (not argument against)- the current logo on my title picture is hand constructed from scratch by me.
The Beyond Heretic logo and the Id/Raven logos on the old jxui title pic were from a box scan of Hexen and were not originally on the title pic. You can verify this by renaming your title pic to something like titleOLD and you'll see the original title in all its glory. :)
jfiles does indeed seem to work, and other than creating a Death Kings title pic and the animations for the walk-cycles and the bull-torch, I am done.
I will be releasing jxui without those anims (once I make the Death Kings title pic) because I currently have only one 3d artist and he said he's not really big on organic modelling so I'm assuming those are going to take awhile.
I'll make an announcement once they are complete. If any other 3d artists would like to step in and help with those, I would be very appreciative and appropriate credits would be given.

Ton, I read your comments on the HUD - I'm no good at muscle detailing (and working on a tight time-frame) so I went for a stylized approach with the HUD.
If anyone would like to improve the HUD, I'll be happy to share the .psd file with them and I'll even split it back up for them once its done (since its a pain to get it split up right so it doesn't have pixellated joints).
Thanks for your comments! :)

Here it is, my first full-on releasable UI pack. It is missing the bull animations and
the classes walk-cycle animations due to time constraints - and I'm not sure I'll get around to adding them.
I hope someone does though! If there is something you'd like to change in this pack that I've created, email me

hmmm...I dont' know your IP but I see someone who keeps trying to download and they are getting a data socket error. Is port 21 blocked on your router? Try copying the shortcut and pasting it into your browser address bar. I just tested this on another computer by doing that in IE and it worked for me.
If you give up and decide to use an ftp client, make sure you disable "passive mode"

Isn't working for me in anyway. Oh well no big deal.
The virtual path in the pk3 should be Data\jHexen\Patches. I had to repack yours that way in order for 1.8.6 to use it.

March 17th, 2005, 04:41 AM
yeah........argh! *sigh* I fixed it- anyone who downloaded the file from me prior to 6:37AM March 17th will need to unzip the pk3 and put the Patches folder into their /data/jhexen folder (or repack it if you're into that kind of a thing. ;))
I did fix AND TEST the one that is currently on my ftp site and my apologies to anyone I've inconvenienced.
