Well, I'm a shareware junky on Doom..just got the retail version of "Ultimate Doom". And alas, confused I am. After running the setup in DOS mode, and getting my control system set up the way I want... Well, I have a prob setting up my sound/music cards.
Since mine's..a BIIIT newer than what they have listed, what should I do? Confused, don't know what to do. Help?

Oh holy wow, you are trying to run the original Dos executable arent you? Thank god you found your way here :p
Heh, dont bother with it, on modern systems it is more hassle than it is worth. There are a plethora of complete replacements for the actual Doom program, that run the game alot better. The one most similair to the original game is prboom (prboom.sourceforge.net). Zdoom (www.zdoom.org) Is quite popular, and feels alot like the original while being able to pull of lots of advanced tricks in user made mods. Doomsday (www.doomsdayhq.com) Looks very nice and you can also download various patches to update the graphics to more modern standards.
All of these simply use the wad file that comes with the game, you dont need anything else from your Doom installation.
There are also many more, so dont be afraid to look around on the internet.

Zdoom, but Doomsday is the best looking one (once you have all the addons).
My advice: Try both. ;)

...Done and done.
Edit: Weiiirddd problem with ZDoom...I'll load it up, and the screen keeps moving to the side real fast, like a messed up TV. *ohh* That's a bad thing methinks. Since I'm running Windows XP Home on a pretty decent computer (works fine), with a not bad graphic/sound card...I..d..u..nno what the problem is. Fact, the music/sound plays fine, and you can move around/go through the menu..if..you can see through the bunch of lines. @.@ Help?

Do you have a TFT? Unfortunately the default mode in zdoom is 320x240, which really messes mine up.
find vid_defheight in zdoom-<username>.ini and change it to this:
vid_defheight=480
vid_defwidth=640

On a side note. You asked which would be best compatible with mods. Well each 'source port' as we call them, has different maps built for it. There are loads of them out there but here are a few of the popular ones. If you want true 3D floors and pretty coloured lighting, Legacy is for you. You want the latter plus 3D models, get Doomsday. If you like to play oldskool DooM then ZDOOM is for you. All have a huge range of features, Legacy and ZDOOM allow scripting. ZDOOM seems to have the most features out there currently but once Legacy C++ hits completion it'll be just as good.
And finally. Please don't let any group of people tell you which port is best. Going onto ZDOOM.org you'll find a lot of people who constantly rant about how ZDOOM is superior to all others but don't have any evidence and can only say "they all suck, ZDOOM r0xorz teh big!!!111one". Now personally I disagree. ZDOOM is too much for a n00b mapper to handle most of the time. Legacy at least makes it easier to do. I started on Legacy and went onto ZDOOM. If you want a great mod for Doomsday, get the DooM 64 TC. It's a damned good piece of mapping skill and excellently utilizes Doomsdays features to capture the atmosphere although some ZDOOMers will tell you it should have been ZDOOM instead of Doomsday.
Anyway, enough from me, settle in, stay out of trouble, don't go near Doomworld (not nessecary but I highly recommend you stay away from there) and you should enjoy your stay.:D
Oh and don't make the same mistake as many a n00b here and get into trouble:
READ THE FAQ! (http://forums.newdoom.com/showthread.php?t=11812)
Glad to be of assistance.;)

Thanks Chilvrence, that helped out. And NoD, I'll take that into mind...well, that's all, thanks everybody.
Edit: Well, now that I know a little more about it..yeah, that screen-resolution setting was the problem. Now it works great. And even though there are some other Doom Players I've messed with I like a lot, I'll stick to ZDoom..for now anyway.
