Just was curious to seeing how far anyone has gotten to making like 5 levels or something for Doom 3? I've always noticed with any game that comes out, that there are what I would call "experts" or maybe guru's. Someone who takes a game when it first comes out and basically goes through it and figures everything out, and then later writes a FAQ for it or whatever. Cause i've seen different people posting links to tutorial's or something, but it kinda seems that no one fully understands the whole mapping system of Doom 3 without the tutorial. I say that because from the posts that i've seen, most of the people are like, yea, here's the link to this site. Or some new person to the game figures something out and is like oh yea, I found this or that out about the game. But what gets me is that the people making the posts are the supposed "experts". It's like, I always thought that the people who figured out everything about a game or game editor never had to use tutorials. I'm not saying I know anything about the mapping system, because I have absolutly no idea of what you can really do with it. But I am just curious as to seeing how many people have taken the time to figure the mapping system out, and have made a few levels or something. Sure, i've made a few, nothing big, just a couple rooms with some monsters. But like I said, there is always that one person out there that figures out everything about a game when it comes out. I suppose that with this editor, yes, the tutorial will help you, but it just kinda gets me when the guy who always figured it out is now like, oh crap, I can't figure this out, looks like I need to find a tutorial. So, i'm just writing this really to see if anyone has figured some of it out, without the tutorial, and to just kinda blow off some steam.

That game's mapping stuff is a giant beast! I haven't bothered mapping for it but just looking through the docs was impressive. Most people don't really figure out all the stuff about a game though. There's just too much. We're still routinely finding new things you can do with the old DooM, let alone DooM III, so even gurus are going to go scrambling for docs pretty often. That's common in things like programming too. I know people who have designed computers and written OSes but when I go to ask a simple question about C they crack open Google. Too much info! :D

I never tried to map for D3 and I don't think I ever will. Leave that up to the guru's. I'd rather stick to classic Doom mapping.

That's true. The mapping for Doom 3 is huge. IMHO I still think that the original Doom is ALOT easier to make maps and whatever else for. It surprises me tho that people come across new things you can do with Doom. I figured everything had been figured out since the game has been out for a LONG time. But I did some C++ programming a while back, and the program I was making was like 4000 lines, after that it just got so confusing of where all the IF statements were at, that I just stopped working on it for a while, then I lost the darn thing. But most of my C++ knowledge came from a friend of mine who had went to DeVry out in Ohio. For some reason tho, I can program alot easier with C++ than I can with Qbasic.

Ninja his post wasn't that long. He could use some paragraphs but so could some others. Id rather see a few run-on posts than have somebody being a lamer. Meh.
Doom007 don't double post, please.

If there wasn't any tutorials on all the games that we edit, the map quality would suffer. :p I need tutorials. Sometimes you can figure it out yourself but sometimes even the easiest stuff can be hard to figure out without a bit of help.

You're not? *Reputation drops by 20* :p
For me it's just like what Ninja said. I don't have the time (or, rather, the patience) to learn D3 mapping. But that doesn't mean I don't encourage anyone else to try :)

Mapping for Doom3 is easy if you've mapped for pretty much any fps game in the last 5 years. The patches can be a bit of a head banger, so too the scripting interface and logic but it's quite straightforward otherwise. You just need to learn to caulc, how to do the visportals and then get stuck in. It's a fairly friendly editor imo.
I also dabble in PainKiller mapping, you have to create the map in either Maya or 3DStudio and do all your lighting, textureing etc in that which is great if you know (and own)the above apps but the rest of the world is screwed cos both have a very steep learning curve.

Im used to use Valve hammer for mapping, it's a bit more diferent from radiant ( in d3 we cant change the windows positions , this sucks)
sorry my english
