Lately my laptop has been getting booted off the net a lot. Turned out I had some annoying spyware (happens any time I use IE for anything...). So I cleaned all that out and everything seems fine but I still get random disconnects. All my other PCs stay on just fine, including the one I'm typing on how, which is on the cable my laptop usually uses. So I know it's not the cable, the modem, the hub, or my ISP. That leaves something wrong wth my computer.

Is there a common problem that causes this or did I just fry something? I think if I get un-lazy tomorrow I'll try reinstalling my network drivers and redoing that connection from scratch or something. I did have some problems before with a wireless card I tried using but at the time I had the service for it disabled in Windows.

Oh yeah, to get back on all I ever have to do is release and renew my IP address. Oddly I get a new one every time I do that. Telus's dynamic IPs usually aren't that volatile.

I had a friend with a Compaq doing the same thing. The only way we could get it to stop was by reloading the O/S.

Interesting. I disabled and re-enabled the connection. It works now. I'll be posting back if I see any more weirdness. I guess the ultimate test would be to reboot and see if it comes back up.

I'm using a D-Link wireless connection and it kills on me every now and then! I can't repair it or re-enable my coneection, so i have to restart my entire computer to get the connection back!! Any Ideas?? *confused*

That's even shittier. No idea though.

My connection is still going strong. Maybe it just needed a kick in the pants.

Glad you got yours that way Aliotroph? My friends didn't come back for long after running the Repair Connection wizard or just disabling it. We did notice a software bridge that was installed at factory and took it off. It helped for about 5 mins. Funny thing is when I reloaded it ,that bridge didn't come back and it works like a charm now. I wonder why it was loaded there in the first place. I'm glad you didn't have to reload it Aliotroph?. My friends was a Compaq Laptop with a built in wireless card.

xtremeneo10, you may want to check for any bridges in your network connections and shut it/them off, then restart and see if it helps... The only other thing I can suggest is to reload Windows. :(

It does the same thing on my other computer too (that is when I had it connected) Maybe I have a faulty D-Link adapter???I will look further into it *book*

Ahhhh ok that bit of info is helpful. Yes that could be then. Could be some bit of spyware/virus but unless it got on both comps that is not likely. Could just be your cable (The one going itno the router or Modem). Is there anyway you can Hardwire into your Router/Modem?

My firends Comp wouldn't even keep a connection when it was hardwired in.

See the thing my dad's is hardwired in and he doesn't seem to be having the same problem as me?? I downloaded some new drivers for it, maybe those will work.... *squint*

Yep give the Drivers a shot first, but if they don't work, then I think you hit the nail on the head with the bad D-Link card.

Is there any way to test card by using your Dads comp? or is that a Desktop? .... You should try hardwiring yours in if you can... It would help eliminate the comp as the problem an narrow it down to the D-Link card.

Okay...is your wireless stuff the same Ghz as a cordless phone in your house?! We tried to do wireless in our apartment BUT we got the same frequency router and cordless phone, so everytime the cordless phone was in use the computers that were connected wirelessly would drop internet connection!

OMG I think that might be it!! It seems that when anyone tries to call it disconnects. Thanx Gold Eyes you may have very well solved my problem!! *bow*

hehehe, that's the first thing that came to my head when you said what your problem was! We couldn't figure it out either. It was like, everytime I would go to make a phone call, D2H would yell "the internet is down again!" and I would hang up and it would be fine. We finally put two and two together and that the phone and router were both 2.4 ghz frequencys. We finally gave up after even trying different channels on the cordless phone, etc... and took the router and wireless cards back and just stayed wired.

Cordless phones were fine at 900MHz. I dunno why they bother changing them all the time.

Well, I still get random disconnects with my laptop. Tempted to just reinstall my network card.

random disconnects suck, we used to get it when i FIRST got my Linksys. But it was all good since the lappy shit the bed and is now a pile of parts in the corner, no reason for wireless anymore ANYWAY! *giddy*

Just figured I'd resurrect this to tell you guys I fixed my disconnect problem with a reinstall of the IP protocol stuffage. The Telus people generally aren't too cool about helping with this stuff, although one guy tried. He was really confused by my laptop reporting a different IP than the one their boxes showed.
