Poor whale... And it sounds rather strange... Somehow I just can't believe they didn't notice that whale. I mean, they write about a "large whale". Noone can tell me that you don't notice, when you carry the weight of large whale with you. And they must also have noticed it when they were maneuvering the ship... Again, I think there's something foul about this story (And no, I don't mean the poor whale!)

How could they not notice the whale? Imagine what it does to the ship's hydrodynamics.

Those cruise ships are massive. A whale on the bow would be akin to a horsefly on the ass of a dog.

I think DD is right. Cruise ships are about as big as they come except for maybe the biggest tankers and carriers. Not I'm not sure how big a Finback whale is but I can see a ship not noticing it. I'd like to know what the front of the ship is shaped like though if it can impale a whale. Perhaps it has a bow with a point under the water to help move through ice?

That is a very unusual case. But i can see how a ship of that size would not notice it. Cruise Ships are very huge. And i do wonder what it got impaled on like alio said.

Surely the crew must've noticed at least something. It's still a 60 foot finback, probably weighing quite a few tons.

Some of the big cruise ships weigh in at 70,000 tons and up. Though thats a measurement not of actual weight but it has something to do with the mass of water the hull displaces..... or something along those lines. :p

Once moved to a nearby nature preserve, the male specimen -- the largest whale ever recorded in Taiwan -- drew the attention of locals because of its large penis, measured at some five feet, the Taipei Times reported.
"More than 100 Tainan city residents, mostly men, have reportedly gone to see the corpse to 'experience' the size of its penis," the newspaper reported.
o...k....I never knew that... *uhh*

Not really, there's not enough space into the average human corpse to accumulate the gases.

There are stories of human self-combustion (http://skepdic.com/shc.html) though.

I grew up in Miami and would often pass by the Port of Miami area going to the beaches.
Those ships are not small by any stretch of the imagination. I dont doubt that they wouldnt have noticed that whale.
