jHexen Trouble

jDoom's awesome. So much so I went and got a hold of old copies of Hexen and Doom2. Trouble is with Hexen. When I tried entering the Portal leading to the Wasetlands the map only loads halfway and then crashes. I'm playing on an eMachine with XP and had no other troubles. I tried turning off all the enhancements but no luck. Any ideas how I can continue the game?
