View Full Version : Doom 3's Gameplay Sux?

I don't know WHY everyone always says Doom 3's gameplay sucks, while I find that it is great, and very fun; although I DO admit they could've taken the time to put in less-repetitive scares. Anyone care to agree/disagree?

I think that doom doesn't need leaning, since it lacks the sneaking element (sigh), and overall it works pretty fine, although I've gotten stuck two times in some places, but those didn't matter much.
The adrealine needles I find useless; Our DooMguy can run so long distances so that you don't need the damn needle. At least I haven't.
As for the repetive thing, I must agree with you there. It really gets repeating. All the time there is an imp teleporting somewhere near you. Luckily if you're a trained imp hunter, they cause you no problems.
The weapons are very gutsy, Blasting something small (like a zombie) with a shotgun really gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling when he flies couple of meters due to one well placed shot. Sometimes the weapons physichs are pretty bad though. Let's just say that you have some better kind of weapon (for example p g (to awoid spoilers I just used the first letters)) and you fire some larger demon (like h k (again to awoid spoilers)) with it, you fire at the demon for some time, and it seems standing very stable on the floor, but when it dies, you can see the demon flying over ten meters because the weapon you fired it with is so powerful. It doesn't look very cool in my opinion.
Lightning has been used VERY well in the game. If the room you're entering has even one dark corner, you should check it with flashlight, since you'll never know what kind of horrors you'll see there.
The demons look cool, although they're more or less pretty much copies of each other except for a few exceptions here and there.
The level design is good, although I was wishing to see less mars base maps, and more of the... other ones. Some of the mars bases looked like each other.
Overall I'd give this game 91/100, since it has been made really well. Only minuses that it gets from me come from the empty plot, and the repeatitive fights.

I wouldn't say the lighting was done THAT well. They could've put in some light bloom here and there, every other game is doing it. I give it a 89/100. I'm not rating it relative to how other games are, but how much improvement is needed.

I guess doom3 had some minor flaws

Doom 3 definitely is not the greatest thing since sliced bread like so many dilusional fans are making it out to be. It's simply a good game. A modernized version of a classic. Nothing more, nothing less.
This one friend of mine has been wearing his Doom 3 t-shirt every day for the past few weeks. He's telling everybody the game is a 20 out of 10. This clown is forced to play at 640x480 with all settings off and it still runs like garbage, yet he loves every bit of it. I explain to him how he's missing out and he agrees. Then I mention how multiplayer is worthless and there's no replay value offline. Once again he agrees. It's so easy to bum people out, especially stupid people.

I think id software deserves a lot of praise for thier work on D3. I wouldn't say it has no replay value offline. I'm more than glad to replay it at least in part and a lot of play will come from custom maps and the like. One thing about realtime lighting... nobody seems to have noticed that Blade Of Darkness had realtime lighting that was done 3+ years ago and it looks great. It's not as advanced as D3's lighting but they had the lighting down when everybody was still using static lighting and I don't know of any other game that uses any kind of realtime lighting unless I'm forgetting something. So really realtime lighting isn't new at all. heh. Ummmm anyhow Doom 3 is a great game.... its more Doom and I can't wait to see what other developers do with the engine or see what id software does next. Lets see what Raven Software does with the D3 engine and Quake 4... methinks its gonna be awesome. Sorry if I went off on a tangent. :p
As for the guy who runs D3 choppy at low res.... if hes happy then I think thats cool. Imagine how he'd like the game if he was running it better. ;)

Hey, about the realtime lightning thingamajig. I think that operation flashpoint has working day-night-cycles, with realtime lightning (well, the sun was only light, but I guess that it counts), and if I remember correctly, it was released around same time as severance did.

The first Hitman had realtime lighting. How many years ago was that made? At least four years by my estimate.

Doom_Dude. Not sure why, but it's interesting to look back on where the technology started.

Yeah its interesting to see where its headed too. I don't know why either but it popped into my brain and I started thinking about it. ;) I didn't know Hitman had real-time lighting.

I agree with most posts here. I don't have any negative issues with D3 really. I don't find the game play repetative at all. the suspense is a killer. occasionally there's the odd predictability, but I usually get all warm and fuzzy inside knowing I'm about blow the shit out of some evil SOB. as for the lighting, I think ID have done an amazing job. especially on my system (gforce fx 5600) I guess a slight let down was comparing the game play to the original doom. heaps of monsters on screen at once compared to 2 or 3 in D3. and one other small issue, I wish that the Mars Base was more interative. instead of just being able to play around with the odd computer and such! but no big deal....as for a score out of 100 or whatever, nah! score systems suck. just like your age, its just another number. beside, I might think a games awesome and is worth 100/100 while someone else thinks the same game is a great pile od arse!

*mild spoilers*
Doom3 is definitely a spectacle and as I am a Doom fan (and Horror fan in general) I am enjoying this immensly.
In terms of *pure* videogame gameplay I have to say that it does have some dissapointments.
It relies more than I thought it would on scripted events and enemies spawning nearby to surprise you. Every encounter appears to be carefully planned so that something jumps out at you at the right time. Its more like a ride through the haunted house at the fun fair rather than a video game. Thats fair enough, but for example it started to feel a little contrived when an imp or trite would appear or spawn soon as I killed the first imp. I realise that they are also trying to keep the number of monsters on screen down also.
I was also dissapointed in no cooperative play and heavy scripting will make it harder for ppl to mod it in the game, though I gather FarCry has a decent Coop mod already.
Some of the ways that monsters came out of thin air (not talking about hellspawning imps) behind me and around corners was a little dissapointing. For instance a whole bunch of trites started coming at me from around a corner, after killing them I went around the corner and it was a little cul-de-sac. I dunno it just seemed a little phoney.
These are minor grievances though as this game is just another step closer to interactive movies rather than old school videogaming.

I agree they were generally well placed so that they looked like they were coming out of the woodwork. Im really splitting hairs with my criticism, probably due to my collosal expectations. Im only about a 1/3 of the way through and to be honest its exceeded my expectations in a lot of ways, like the immersivness and especially the scares and tension in parts.

Um, maybe we should move to spoilers. Or better yet, maybe I should start a spoilers version over at spoilers?
But the bad thing about doom is also, for ex. "Okay, this room is clear and there is NO way anything can sneak up on mee... OH SHIT WHERE DID THAT COME FROM!?"

I was playing some old-skool shooters today, Radiant Silvergun and Abuse and I noticed particularly with Abuse how enemies would 'appear' behind you as you made your way to an objective and back. Methinks that Doom3 is not taking itself too seriously (i.e. its a video game not an interactive movie).
Anyway, Id always surprises me, I only just realised that Q3A pisses all over UT :-/ In terms of gameplay.

Overall, i like the game. The lighting and sounds are fantastic. I nearly shit myself while loading the plasma gun for the 1st time. I thought something was spawning....lol
About the only thing so far that i found to be a slight disappointment was HELL. Not the level itself, but the fact that it really didn't fit in the game. One minute you're in a space-station, and the next you're in a firey place called HELL......just didn't quite fit in. I just entered [Central Processing] so i have no idea whats in store for me.

I must have you confused........again !!...lol
I finished HELL three levels ago. Next up was Delta Complex(a.k.a. Delta Labs 5) followed by CPU Complex, then Central Processing.

I liked the way you enter the hell, and the hell itself is the coolest fps map I've ever seen. Only minus about the hell is the ending. You kill the guardian, and then a teleport appears in front of you, and then you find yourself in the starting place, and somehow you can now teleport back. Now that doesn't make sense.
