Seems very likely that the idea of Trite was at the very least influenced by the Thing.

One of the last good horror/action movies.

The trite is obviously based on a spider. Same goes for the thing.
I dont think the idea came from the thing since a fear of spiders is already widespread in human culture. There was no need to take that idea from that movie since the idea is just part of the human psyche.

Yeah but what they have in common is the upside-down human head with legs that look like fingers. Obviously based on the thing.

I'm not a fan of spiders in games. The HeXen II ones actually creep me out... I think its the sounds and they're everywheres and thats annoying. Anyhow I think the Trites were well done and when one drops in from above is kinda freaky.. Definitely gonna have a few in my D3 maps. Now Id like to see an Arachnotron.... I hope my theory of id software saving the arachnotrons for an expansion are right. heh.

The HeXen II spiders creeped you out!? OMG. Oh, wait, the centaurs always scared me, so I guess I should shut-up.

Well I guess thats close, but severed human heads and skulls are not anything origional to anybody. They've just always been part of that "scare culture."

Does anyone know what movies ID watched to get their inspiration for Doom3? I remember them talking about watching certain movies for it but they never said which.

Maybe Dawn of the Dead (the original) to get inspiration for the zombies. The zombies from the movies and those from Doom do look alike. Same pale faces, same intelligence (or rather lack of it), same movements (slow and clumsy).

Alien 1. No doubt about that.

i'll agree with that.
spiders fine, i had a big house sipder crawl across my neck the other day, i'd been out running and was dripping with sweat, picked up a towel when i got home, i thought it was sweat down my neck, but someone pointed out it was a spider, must have been in the towel.
but yeh, sipders fine.
Inverted cranium, arachnopods; hell no!
maybe the people at ID decided to take the idea for some monsters out of some movies that they know put the shits up people.
for example the imp has a similar movement to the monster in resident evil, in trems of slash attacks. (pictured on the right below):
