View Full Version : So, where exactly do I submit wads for others to use?

I don't know the first thing about all those FTPs, are there any good plain websites where I could simply link my wad to there and hope it gets noticed?

Go to your favorite free software download sites and look for an FTP program. There are many. I had CuteFTP, which is not free, but no longer works now that I live in Brazil. So I can't recommend any other or know how to use it. Feel free to ask though. :)
Only other idea is to search for Doom wads and see if the site you find is accepting additions. Best is ftp://archives.3dgamers.com/ but you will need FTP.
(actually, there is a drag and drop way to do this, but I have forgotten it. :( User name is "anonymous" and password is your email address.)

DooM Wad Station (http://www.doomwadstation.com/main/) is another place for wads.

You can also try making your own site and updating it, but Its up to you to get traffic for it.

It's a fun little map. Simple and unelaborate, but well thought-out and executed. I'm not quite sure why you put a soulsphere just before the exit though, and making the berserk secret "one chance only" doesn't strike me as a good idea (at least I think you only get one chance - I haven't check in an editor though).
I recorded a couple of demos. Nothing special - I didn't spend much time on them. UV Pacifist in 0:55 and Nightmare in 1:24. They're here (http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/gkburgess/GothLmps.zip). They'll play back with Doom2.exe, Prboom or Eternity. If you didn't intend it to be possible to run to the exit in under a minute, ignoring all the monsters, then you might want to toughen it up a bit. ;)
Uploading to the Doom Community Archive really isn't so complicated, and will get your map seen by lots of people (well, a high proportion of those interested in Doom) with minimal effort on your part. A few links:
The archive is here: ftp://archives.3dgamers.com/pub/idgames/
The upload area is here: ftp://archives.3dgamers.com/pub/idgames/incoming/
The instructions are here: ftp://archives.3dgamers.com/pub/idgames/README.INCOMING
The template for your textfile is here: ftp://archives.3dgamers.com/pub/idgames/UPLTEMPL.TXT
Unofficial instructions, which go into more detail about how to upload to an FTP site, can be found here: http://www.doomworld.com/vbmisc/faq.php#nstf

Thanx Grazza. I uploaded my miniwad a few months ago without FTP, but completely forgot how to do it.
And ReX, I had never thought about Doom Wad Station, even though I got many good things there, I wasn't aware Bob Larkin was accepting submissions, but that is also a very good idea and resource. :) I asked him about using some of his music and things from some of the great wads he has made, but never about listing my maps there. Many thank u's :)

Thanks, Grazza. Your demos don't seem to work, unfortunately.
I did do some slight editing (added a few more monsters, replaced the Berserker with the soulsphere) so if you want to try again, I have it uploaded both in the link I provided in my first post and at the FTP site you linked to me.
BTW, I do have a site up at http://geocities.com/skywalkersmut - it's nothing special, but I do hope to update it on a semi-regular basis.
And about Doom Wad Station - where's the link for me to submit the map? I don't see anything there about wad submission...

Thanks, Grazza. Your demos don't seem to work, unfortunately.Ah, they do. You need to watch them with Doom2.exe version 1.9 or one of the ports that has 100% demo compatibility with it (Prboom or Eternity; not Legacy, Zdoom, etc.). If you've got 1.666 or a modified/corrupted version of 1.9, then they won't work.
I included a batchfile to play them back with Doom2.exe. It will work as long as everything is in the same folder. You can edit the batchfile by replacing "doom2" with "prboom" to watch them with prboom.

I use Doom 95, I don't actually have a doom2.exe file.
Grazza

OK then, you can get doom2.exe from here (http://www.doom2.net/~mykdoom/e2m5/) (in fact, it's identical to the doom.exe that comes with the 1.9 shareware) or (recommended) prboom from here (http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/prboom/prboom-2.2.4-win32.zip?download) (click on one of the download icons).
Edit: I've just tested them with Doom95, and they work fine there too. In the launcher you need to choose DOOM2 as the game wad file, GOTHIC as the custom wad file, and then choose one of the demos in "Advanced..." - Demo - Playdemo.

Alright, I got the files to work, but it seems to me that you're running around in a strange manner, like you don't know where you're going.
EDIT: I'm guessing the problem is that since I've updated my WAD file (things only) since you've recorded the demos, it looks as if the demo was recorded on another level. The updated version is uploaded on both the 3dgamers FTP and my own site.

If I appear to die, or don't exit the map in the stated times (0:55 and 1:24), then it means it has desynched. There's really no reason for that to happen if you are using the same exe as I have tested them with unless you are using a different/modified version of one of the files. For instance, if you have rebuilt the nodes of gothic.wad since you first uploaded it, that would cause demos to desynch.
BTW, it looks from this (http://www.gamers.org/pub/idgames/LAST.24hours) as if you have might have forgotten to include a textfile.
Edit (in response to your edit): Yes, they will definitely desynch if you use a different version of the wad.

Well, I did include a TXT file in the zip archive, and it looks as if another person remembered their text file but somehow had their level rejected.
EDIT: If you want, you could email me your version of gothic.wad @ fezzador@gmail.com - at least it'll save you the trouble of re-recording just for one person *crazy*

demos/wad: I've added it to the zip (http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/gkburgess/GothLmps.zip) with the demos.
Archive: Normally people upload a zip that includes the wad and the txt, and the txt separately. I'm not too sure how forgiving Ty is when people deviate from that. I imagine it will probably be OK, but it would save Ty a bit of hassle if you uploaded the txt separately too.

Got it to work, finally. Very impressive! :)
I'll give it another shot w/ the text file this time. I'll see if it goes through this time!
EDIT: The text file got rejected, too. Am I uploading it to the wrong place? (incoming)
Which folder should I upload it to?
Grazza

ftp://archives.3dgamers.com/pub/idgames/incoming/ is the right place to upload. Indeed, it is the only place to upload files for the archive.
Your files haven't been rejected. They are in incoming, and awaiting approval.

Gotcha. How long does it take before I get approved, on average?
Grazza
August 29th, 2004, 07:41 PM
It varies - the archive is maintained by just one guy (Ty Halderman), working in his spare time. Typically stuff is approved within a day or so, but it all depends on how busy Ty is, and he has even been known to go on vacation.
I'd guess the average is about 18 hours, but that's just a figure plucked out of the air.

Ah, okay, thanks.
I understand now - the last 24 hours list just shows all activity. I thought it was the reject list until I saw the actual reject list and the reason why it was rejected. :p

I got a question for ya- where's another place, because I use HTML Documents for my WADs, not the template. I don't want my stuff junked withoue anyone even looking at it just because I take the trouble to make an HTML document for each WAD.
Grazza

You could include the html document in the zip, in addition to the standard textfile.
DoomRater

I supose I could just do that. However, for the record, I do not like the template, because it asks for information that would be better located on a website, and in too many cases the information asked for doesn't apply. However, I'll fill in the required fields and point them to the HTML file for anything that isn't standard. At least that way people can look at it without having to be pointed to a website of mine...
In any case, here's a personal website I have almost abandoned...

....and in too many cases the information asked for doesn't apply.
In that case write N/A or 'not applicable, or leave those spaces blank. Because it's meant to to be a standardized template, it has to accommodate many different types of uploads. Plus, it only takes a few minutes to complete the essentials. There's nothing preventing you from inserting an HTML file in the zip too.

UPDATE: caverns.wad is complete :)

You might notice some similarities between this and gothic - but it should be a bit more difficult. Enjoy! (And yes, I'll be uploading it to the 3dgamers FTP soon)
