I know, I know, I should've just left never started a ZDoom thread and just asked for help in this thread, but I didn't think of starting this thread until after I posted the ZDoom thread.
I have many questions about many different Doom ports, so that's why I thought it would be best if I started the thread here.
I'm a noob when it comes to Doom ports, so please help me out. First question, where is the best site to download Doom ports? I just downloaded mine off File Planet.
Question #2: Once I download a port, what Doom folder do I put it in? I have Doom Collector's Edition, so I've been just been extracting the files into the Ultimate Doom folder.
That's all I'd like to know for right now. Please help me out.

Mostly you can download the ports on their own websites.
When you install a port read the FAQ and/or readme to find out where you put the main doom Iwads and that's all about u gotta know;):P

Thanks for the help. I'll just delete the ones I have so far and start over by downloading them off their own site. Because I don't really like File Planet anyway.
Question #3: What is the main point of Doom Ports? What are they supposed to do? I downloaded and installed 2 already and all I have seen them do is give you more options and/or better graphics.

yeah ,fileplanet sucks. i've downloaded a few from there before too then found out later they weren't even the latest versions or anything so its best to just to d/l them off on their own websites ,like wicked said. no "waiting in line" either.
btw have you tried jdoom yet using 3d models ? there's also an environment pack that adds new sky boxes too ,it's really cool =D

These are the main Doom ports IMO and in no particular order:
Doomsday (jDoom)
Legacy
Zdoom/ZdoomGL
Skulltag
Zdaemon
Also definetly worth checking out but not currently as popular are:
EDGE
Eternity
Risen3D
prBoom
Vavoom
Plus loads more that I can't recall atm.
Download a few of em and see which ones you like. Each port is different and tends to specialise in different areas. For instance Doomsday (jDoom) is superb for graphics while Zdoom's forte is editing features for mod/map makers.
EDIT: Doh, I forgot EDGE.

Do any ports give you new levels or weapons, etc. I'm kinda getting tired of the same old maps and weapons.

If it's new levels/weapons/monsters and stuff your after go here: http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/
Theres more there then you'll be able to play in a life time :)
For many of them though you'll need a port to play (sometimes they only work in one particular port).

Wow, that's a lot of downloads that I don't understand, maybe I better stick to basic ports for now.
I found all the official sites for all the recommended ports, thanks to Google. I don't know how I could live without it. I guess I'll start downloading. I had another question, but I forgot what it was.
Now I remember!
I have two computers. One computer has my Doom games downloaded on it, but no Internet Connection. The other one has an Internet Connection. I use the one with internet to download and transport the Ports to my computer with Doom using CDs that I burn the files on. Does this effect the files at all, for them to be burned onto a CD and transported to another computer?

No, it won't make a differnce.
If you want a weapons mod I like Immoral Conduct (http://www.doomworld.com/immoralconduct).

Oh, and one more question before I try these out.
How many ports can you have in your Doom folder at the same time?

It's best to duplicate the wad files because otherwise it would be a directory mess...

Ha ha ha. Yeah, I've had that happen to me before. It got so messy that I ended up deleting everything except for the original Doom files and starting over.

You can have lots of ports in your Doom folder, and this has the benefit of keeping command lines nice and simple. Some ports (e.g. Doomsday) work best in their own separate folder though.
The main potential problem is if some ports require different versions of the same file (e.g. Zdoom and Legacy use different versions of fmod.dll, and don't work if they have the wrong one). I have a couple of little batch files to swap between the two versions of fmod.dll, and that works fine. I keep prboom 2.02 in a separate folder, so that its cfg file doesn't get mixed up with that for prboom 2.2.4.

I tried out the following today:
Legacy
Doomsday
Zdoom
Skulltag
I have a few questions about them.
1. Why does Zdoom and Skulltag seem so alike?
2. Can you get the new weapons in Skulltag in 1 player mode (without using the "idkfa" code)?
3. Is there any way of turning off Auto-Aim in Skulltag?
4. I saw a pic of actual 3-D enemies in jDoom, where can I download that?

1: Skulltag is based on Zdoom. It just adds a lot of stuff to it.
2: Yes, if they're in the map (and not multiplayer-only).
3: Yes. It's done the same way as in Zdoom - via "Player Setup" (go to the multiplayer menu). In Zdoom it's in the Options menu.

Wow, those 3-D Models for my jDoom makes my Doom game feel like new. The only question I have about that is: Is the things the the Pain-Elementals spit out supposed to look like fireballs and not Lost Souls?
Oh, and one more thing. Where is the best place to download maps specially made for jDoom or Skulltag?
Wait a minute...all the Lost Souls have been replaced by Fireballs with the mind of their own. Huh?
Aliotroph?

Yeah, I noticed that issue with the Lost Souls too. I never did bother to figure out what was going on.
There don't seem to be a huge number of levels specifically made for JDoom. There are lots of levels just made for good olde DooM or DooM II that are really fun to play in JDoom because they look great. My favourite pack of levels to play with JDoom is Vilecore (http://megawad.newdoom.com/megawads.shtml#vilecore). You need DooM II to play it.

Cool, its a 32 level WAD, I like those better then those small WADs with only a few levels. I found Eternal Doom, which you can find off the Doomsday site. I like that WAD a lot. I'll have to try out Vilecore sometime.
