Thats a bit of an open ended question. In the jDRP I'm using them for debris, gore effects, lightning bolts and loads of things.
Do you mean how to implement them?

nope , only ideas , if there is something in jHexen what will like them :-)
for edorien look at ftp://ftp.jbserver.com/jdoom/ there is example
only missiles , no gas or smoke that is done by point/textured particles better,
just don´t talk about q2 smoke or explosions ... they are not model particles but they are models.. gibs are good idea , maybe there will be use for gargoyle death

Heres a paticle ded for HeXen made by Parmenion:
HeXen particle effects ded (http://www.geocities.com/the_shinjo2002/hexen_blood.txt)
Rename the extension to ded before use.
