Heres a little rant about doom 2 editing....

I've made Hexen wads.
I've made Heretic wads.
I've made Heroes of might and magic II, III, and IV maps.
I've made Unreal maps.
I've made Unreal Tournament maps.
I've made Morrowind Mods.
I've made Warcraft II maps.
I've made Starcraft maps.
I've made an entire Bard's Tale Construction Set game.
I've made Command and Conquer maps.
I've made Red Alert maps.
I've made a text-based adventure game in VB.

But after all that, I still come back to make more doom 2 maps. What is it about doom 2 that is soooo fun?

And I must say that out of all that map makeing, I take the most pride in my doom 2 wads.....

My god I must be insaine.

HeHe just havin a bit o fun,
Happy Dooming!

heh, I'd love to be able to make unreal tournament maps, sadly I'm not smart enough :(
I'll stick to me doom 2 ;)

Oh come on you dont give yourself enough credit....

However my point is that in all the editing that I have done over the years I still find doom 2 to be by far the most enjoyable...

For example unreal map makeing is pretty net, given the fact that you get a whole extra dimension to work with. But it still dosent hold water (IMHO) to makeing doom maps. Games like Unreal, UnrealTournament get bogged down really fast with picky details and hard to follow/understand mapping structures. Sure unreal can do a lot more than doom but I just dont have the time, energy, and will anymore to work on thoes projects. I just have so much fun with doom 2, always have, probably always will and that I believe is the single most importent factor in deciding what kind of games to work with. The next game to pull me away from doom 2 editing is going to have some super-duper big shoes to fill.

Doom editing is so simple and fundamental to work with that I find maping to be very relaxing and enjoyable.

Unreal Tournament for example once again: Its like "Oh boy my bot paths arn't working" "Oh man I screwed up makeing a water sector now my whole map is flooded." Plus the fact that you can spend hours in UT and still feel that you havent been makeing progress, where as in doom its quite the opposite...

(For al you UT gamers, no offense, I've just had bad experiences with UT....)

I agree with you. I love UT, but any experience I had making maps to it just sucked!

Doom's the best because it's simple and limited. You don't have to worry a lot because you even can't...

Hehe its like the following exaderated example:

Unreal: You map out your "new concept" in UnrealEd2 for 10 hours, then play test to find out that it looks like total crap.

Doom2: You map out your "new concept" in Doom Builder for 10 minuets, then play test to find out that your on your way to something good.

By the way I feel that UnrealEd2 is the spawn of Satan.

Happy Dooming!

Hmm... well, luckily Editing Doom 2 is far more fun than Playing Doom 2... I find the id Doom2 maps to be rather uninspired generally.

The original Doom maps are pure genius in my opinion. So addicting they were. Don't get me wrong there are some good Doom 2 maps... but generally speaking Doom 1 just felt like it was alittle more original as far as map designs went. This is of course all my own personal opinion. haha.

Doom2 mapping is absolutely fantastic!! :D the possibilities of what you can creat are almost endless! (well, that is if you have the right skills and source ports...lol) *thumbs*

It took me some time to learn how to build a successful Doom level (well that's obvious), and finally when I finished my first "real" level, I just wanted to build more and more levels, at the moment I have done more than 20 levels within 4 months (started DooM mapping 4 months ago).

I used to build maps for Duke Nukem 3d, still mapping for it, but not so often as before. First I was amazed how easy Duke was to edit, but right now I'm getting quite bored on it since building a single sucessful level takes too long. Not to mention that your level must be damn good, you must use many different textures, almost perfect lightning/shadows, details etc., in order to get high score. That's obvious, but nothing will change the fact that building that kind of level is damn boring, at least in my opinion.

And what comes to Doom 2 then, you can build many good levels within the time what is needed to build a single Duke level. Duke has got more advanced features, effects and so on, but Doom 2 editing beats the crap out of every other game I've customized yet.

Ah lets see now. I've made maps for:
Heretic
HeXen II
Quake
Quake II
Half-Life
Morrowind
and recently Doom III

....and Doom II is the most fun so far.

hehe that just means you take profesional pride in each of your masterpieces. I'm going so fast because of just how dedicated I am right now, once the initial hype dies down I'll spend more time (segment it) and hopefully make them much better then I can do now.

Edits I've done:

Starcraft
Warcraft III
Doom2

...Thats it... But gosh I never expected such an easy and fun editor such as the ones designed for doom to exist anywhere! :D

I can't agree more about Doom 2 being the best to edit.
I tried Unreal tournament and I'm getting somewhere, but not fast, and I can't be bothered learning.
I tried Red Faction but the editor doesn't even work :(
I tried Quake III and Jediknigt 2, but Radient is confusing.

So, naturally, doom 2 is the best because it's easy and fun.

I rest my case :)

The hardest editor I ever tried to use was the Blade Of Darkness editor. Meh, parts of it are in Spanish (if my memory is right) and theres a 3d view (I couldn't find it) and it like a cross between radiant and doomcad.... just strange. I have no idea how the level designers made those big maps with that thing.

Meanwhile it's back to Doom editing. :)

heh... i found unrealed to be kinda fun... but i never actually finished a level.... iv been using db for about 2 weeks now... and i've had several attempts that well ... werent right... (they were my learning experience) , but anyway .... the only thing i dont like about doom editing (with db) is the fact that when ur in sectors mode you cant make a sector inside a sector without switching to line mode... i think this should be fixed... lol if i had any coding knowledge.. id try to do it myself... but... heh ... and the faact that i cant seem to start a linedef from a vertex on a sector.... (i mean for like 2side walls and more complex structures) .... id send an example... but i dont got one... ill have to make one up very soon... lol will take 10 minutes in db (if that rofl)

I think Doom textures are the greatest ever created, not yet surpassed by other game's and that's one of the reasons I prefer Doom over any FPS's. These textures never get boring. Where else do you get satanic/gothic, high tech, urban, nuclear and LSD trippin stuff on a single game?.

MasterOfPuppets

yeah Doom's textures worked together in more ways then they were ever intended too. most new games have like 90% specialized textures, 10% stock.

Id has not just made a game, they made a people. I don't believe it was just marketing to see them release the source code and make so many things possible. Maybe thye just had an idea, like us, that the more people can play, the more famous (infamous) it will become. (?)

I can forget about Quake after buying and playing every expansion pack that was available. Half-Life and Unreal? I don't find much exciting and knew for them either. In my own opinion, Doom3 will also be Doomed to this fate (no pun intended, just not so simple to edit.)

Doom2 Lives still. and with Legacy, ZDoom, JDoom, this is an infinitely expandable game with as many features as one would care to add.

I would venture to guess that in five years still, there will be more interest in Doom2 than Doom3. But maybe things will change greatly. Still, what is simple is best. "If it ain't broken, don't fix it."
