Hey, I just checked out JDoom today... And it's pretty awesome. Just out of interest, I'm hoping to put a small patch together, based on the game 'Metal Gear Solid'. I haven't got too much experience with modding but it's going alright so far, but I need some help. I have a few questions:

1. How can I change the character image on the HUD? I made this one yesterday and I want to replace the one in the game:
http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/bigbosspic.png

2. How do I replace the Doom 2 title screen and menu logo? I checked the .ded files and I can't seem to find a way to edit them.

3. Is there an easy way to edit the enemy solider skins? It'd take forever to go through all of them. Preferably a basic template I could use.

Oh well, thanks in advance for any help I might get.

Edit: Ack, wrong forum. It was the first forum that loaded, I presumed it was a general forum. Hopefully it can be moved. :/

First off, are you going for high res or low res.

For high res, read the documentation on slidespace (if it cotains it lol), otherwise you have to create a new wad and insert all of the new sprited into it (titled the same as the original to use them)

thats some nice sprite drawing.. I loved MGS.. hopefully you can make the gameplay stay like it too.. doies jDoom allow patrolling monsters? I know its possible to Fscript it in Legacy...

Patrolling guards would be a good addition to it. But it'd be awesome to have some sort of radar/field of vision stuck in there. :P

Oh, I took a crack at different styles too:

I like the first one best, but give it the blue colour.. btw, is snake with long hair and a beard a MGS:2 thing?

Don't forget about hartman. How can we forget hartman? http://www.ebaumsworld.com/jacket.html
Maybe you can pull some dialogue from one of these soundboards?

Patrolling routes can be used in ZDoom too, I think I am edging towards legacy or ZDoom for this. Although I don't know which would be the best for customizing (Hud, sprites, scripts, textures, etc...) I would like to know the best tools if possible for this sort of job aswell.

Useful images I have drawn:

Only concept since it would be near impossible to animate. :/

nice one so far, only gripe would be his neck, torso and arms are a little long for the legs, once again you have some great skills at low pixel-type drawing.. a little over 5 years ago and yo would have been a shoein for a game artist job :)

I made this simple template of a character yesterday:

Might come in handy, if anyone wants to use it... It''s free to be used...

Excelent work, you are very talentuous...

-but why you does'nt use 3d model...?

-You can use Wintex for suppr/adding ( sprites, textures, sound, map )/ correct sprite offset in a Wad; or WXE
-try get it here :

Ahhh, bringing up old posts. :P

Cain: I'm unsure about 3D models since I can't model very well, so I would have to learn alot of stuff to model MGS quality props and characters.

I am still having thoughts about this, I could make it in doom or in the half life engine. The doom engine probably isn't suitable for the kind of gameplay I want to work on. There have been alot of Half Life MGS models floating around that I could use either way for weapons, characters and maps.

Here are two models I found that I could convert for the project, very good quality:

Snake Model:

All this is very good, but is it going to be free if not then you are going to need DOOMtm makers permission or you'll be in trouble. Oh and why don't you go onto www.gamemaker.nl download and register it. This would give you a tutrial of how to make a doom-like game! with your own picture! The only problem is im from the uk, and I can't get euro's! please use www.gamemaker.nl to make the game, it is much easier and I don't want to burst your brain making it the hard way! Use the game maker way!

I thought you didn´t need anything else than Doom to play and make Doom mods... If it´s gonna be a fan work I don´t see any problem with copyrights and such, specially if he ain´t going to get any money from it. I´m not an expert on these matters though.
Also, this project seems cool. The Snake model is a high quality one, but Raiden looks too girlish... Ahhh, I love Metal Gear, I´m so excited they actually are going to make a fourth part :D.
Finally, seems like Legacy supports some kind of monsters patrolling, I think ZDoom does too but you won´t be able to use these models with them. Jdoom looks so impressive and has cool built-in features, I think it could be your choice :).

Ravey I know this topic is a bit old (going on 3 years now) but I like your interest in making a MGS game. I myself am interested and am about to be complete in modeling the docks area from MGS1 for use in the source engine (Half Life 2). If you are good with character modeling or texture creation that'd be great as there are ALOT of textures needed that the original Half Life 2 texture library just doesn't cover (Snow for one). If you are still interested and would like to somehow collaborate on some parts that'd be great.
