I figured out the avidemo feature, turning demos into avi files, but when the process is done, it's not an avi, it's an ordered set of stills in .tga format. Anyone know of a program that can compile these into an .avi file? I know I used one to make video like this before *coughhackdoom3alphawheeze* but I don't remember what it was.

From the program's main screen, in the Directory field, type in the path to your avidemo output screenshots folder. A quicker way is to click the "..." button and just browse to the directory.

Change the file option from BMP to TGA. You should then see a list of all the screenshots appear in the "Files" field.

Under "Output" options, type the path and name of the avi you wish to create (e.g., "C:moviesdoom3rocks.avi")

Leave the default Frame and Key Rates (if any of you movie experts suggest a better setting, let me know).

Click the create button. A new window will pop up, prompting you to select a video codec. After you click OK, the program will compile your .tga files together.

After the window closes, you're done! Go to the target directory you specified, and watch your first Doom 3 movie =)

(Copied from a website I can't tell you about, contains stuff that breaks the #1 rule in the D3 forums)

Glad to help.

Only downside is that there is no sound, and the video size is the same as all of the combined TGA's. (EX. The AVIDemo you recorded produces 2 GB's worth of TGA's. The movie will be 2GB's in size). At least I think that is the way it works.

any other options? I can't believe I can't remember the name, but the program I found before would use any AVI codecs installed so size wasn't a problem, and it would interleave the audio. blah, time to buy adobe premiere ;)

I said that is the way I think it works.

How can it have the audio when the movie is made completely out of a buttload of snapshots?

Doom saves a .wav file of the demo alongwith the snaps. Sorry, i didn't check out the program before posting, lemme see... that might actually be the thing.

Yeah, that's it. Thanks a lot! sorry for that ;)

Oh, I didn't know that. The program would probably be able to compile the WAV in the movie.

VirtualDub (http://www.virtualdub.org) plus your favorite MPEG4 codec should get you a good compressed video. And it can add the audio too.

yeah, i've got that around here somewhere. didn't know it would work with ordered stills though, so didn't think of that. anyhoo, new problem. there IS NO AUDIO... it saces a file, but it's nothing. and when I play back a demo without saving to avi (playdemo <demoname>) it's silent, then afterwards, there's no music in the main menu unless I do an s_restart. Any ideas? maybe there's another variable to add with playdemo to get sound...

Why not use the avigame command?

well I'd never do that... because i've never heard of that.... does that capture while you're playing?

EDIT: Okay I tried that and yes, that just does the same as avidemo, but while you're playing. It's actually a lot less useful because it slows the game down to make sure it captures and resizes every frame. with avi demo, at least you play through in full speed and can just wait for the compile later... get a cup of coffee or something.

Still though, Either playing back demos or avidemo-ing, i get no sound...

Mr Insanity...did you ever make the video? Just wondering how it turned out

it turned out craptastic. The sound never gets recorded so even though there's a .wav file, it's empty. As far as I can tell, you can't control the resolution of the exported frames, and for some daft reason, it saves them all at a 1x1 aspect ratio, not 4x3 or anything close, so everything's vertically stretched. Now with premiere pro and a lot of finageling, I could probably fix the aspect ratio and if I wanted, record the sound in an editor while I'm making the demo, then sync them up..... it's too much effort.
