At the moment i'm not very confident my computer will run doom 3 very well and planning on upgrading:

->upgrading to 2.3GHz from 1.2GHz AMD(if my mother board can handle it, and my mate can find a new processor)
->512MB RAM from 256MB (still gotta find my FSB speed and CAS latencyfrom my motherboard manufacturer)
->keeping my radeon 9000 "hercules" Pro and the big turbo fan that takes up a whole PCI slot and keeps everything nice and cool.

think that'll do it. or do i need anything else. I'm not planning on going over-kill.

Is anyone else doing the same or is your computer in good shape?

I recently purchased doom 3 and found my system struggled for good fps. 1.2ghz will not run smoothly, so yes, you will need to upgrade there. I have a p4 1.7 ghz overclocked to 2.0 ghz and that struggles. 512 should be right for memory. However, I'm not sure how your radeon 9000 would run. I would recommend updating it. Nvidea is shown to work best for doom 3. A FX 5600 would be the go for a budget video card.

I did nothing but put the options on low for me, medium i can run, but it lags. My computer is some what more powerful than yours Wouse (1.6 processor 380 somethin ram radeon 9600) but it runs great (almost) on low at 1024 X 768. some lag problems in big fights but thats all. i didnt notice a big differnece in visual quality unless i was looking closely at the walls or was trying to find something wrong. Dont get me wrong it looks stuning on full (my friends computer runs great on high) but i really dont pay enough attention to the detail, that and its always dark.

just looked up FX 5600's. 128MB graphics card, so its about the same as the radeon 9000 pro. thanks for the advice though.

I'm using a Radeon 9000 Pro and I'm happy with how it runs.
Thats added with:
AMD XP 3200
512MB DDR PC2700

I suggest you keep the 9000 Pro and if you don't like how D3 runs with it then go for an upgrade to the video..

You can't judge performance on amount of memory (but your not alone, look at the FX5200 256mb,much slowing than a 9800 128mb but they don't want you to know that). Any FX 5600 or higher would be an improvement (thx to UltraShadow) but the performance improvement in other games doesn't justify the upgrade. Stick with the 9000 till the x300/6200 comes out.
