I bought the game thinking I could play on ultra but I cant it runs smoothe for about 4 secconds then lags. Also lags some times on high mode. If I baught 1 more stick of RAM 512MB could I play on ultra.

System spect
512mb RAM
X800
AMD 3200+

Ultra is suppose to require 512mb of video memory so that lag is likely textures being swapped out to main memory.

UH oh I baught the wrong RAM then *flip*

Can I at least run it in high with no lag?

you probably could if you use the tweakings posted in the tech support section of the doom 3 forums. i can run it pretty well on high but there are slow downs at times like when fighting monsters.

I find it hard to believe you have so little RAM along with one of the newest, most expensive video cards out there. Get at least another 512 MB. Hell, I upgraded to 2 gigs a few months back.
Be sure when you get more ram it's the same kind you already have in the computer.

Oh yeah, and there are no affordable cards in existence, or have even been announced that can take advantage of Doom 3's Ultra settings. There is one card I know about, but it costs several THOUSAND dollars.

Yea im a retard when it comes to ram. Um i baught new ram but its not the same as already in my comp but your aloud to run diffrent brands. Spent atleast 3 hours finding the right peice of ram.

If you got enough RAM left, you could increase the AGP aperture size to 256. That way you would have 512 MB of video RAM, 256 coming from your system RAM.

He probably already does or the program would've likely bombed out with an out of memory error. The lag is likely the textures being read off of system memory and it can only be done at 2gb's a sec (the speed of AGP8x) instead of the 30+gb's at video memory. The DM maps seem to be simple enough to fit into 256mb's so try some of those and see if it still lags.

Yea I deathmatch maps without any lag unless there like 4 ppl shootin of rockts next each other.

eX_Do0mY how do you do what your talking about. Is doing that safe.

Go into the BIOS (usually an F key during after powering on) and look for AGP aperture. This is the maximum amount of memory that will be used for video (if it isn't needed it won't be used and its safe). Don't expect any miracles though.

I read in Pc Gamer that the game automaticaly unlocks the ultra setting when a 512 card is detected. So even if you got it to run on Ultra it might not be the "true" ultra.

d00d the ulta setting was created for graphics cards that dont exist. Sure we could all go out and buy one right now..but who here has the cash? of course when we are able to afford a nice 512 card doom will probably seem mediocre to whats out..im still waitin for half life 2. hope my nice $30 9200 can play it ^.^ i can barely run doom. o and caden, nice quote. they live was awesome, but The Thing is still the best

Actually thats a quote from duke3d. In They Live it goes something along the lines of "Im here to chew bubblegum and kick ass, and Im all out of bubblegum". Almost the same, but changed. (kudos Looney for that one).

you cant play it smoothly cause its ati, and ati and doom 3 do not mix. my 6800 gt has no problem on 1600 1200 res on ultra high, but it only has 256 mb, hmm. who knows but ultra shadow 2 owns j00.

ULTRA quality uses NO compression for any textures in the game.

ATI and Doom 3 don't mix?

My Radeon 9000 Pro says differently.

Id say she mixes well. Thats medium quality at 1024 x 768 and getting 30+ FPS with a Radeon 9000 Pro and I haven't seen any Lag yet. You don't need ULTRA or even High quality to have a good game.
