What is the best free forum software? I am running my own fedora core2-based web/ftp server, and am thinking of adding some forums to it. I was wondering if anyone had some experience with the various softwares, and if i could get some advice.

Among free and open source software, phpBB tops my list. Fairly good product, huge MOD database, and pretty good support.

You signed up to reply to a thread that's been ignored for almost five years? *bug*

Well, nothing's changed. There's a lot of good free stuff out there, but phpBB definitely tops my list.

If you don't like it though, SMF (http://www.simplemachines.org/) might be good too, but I've never tried it personally.

That may be true but if you read the rules of the board it says not to dredge up old threads and to just start a new one.

Bah. Totally forgivable when it's actually a useful thread. Just weird when somebody signs up to reply to an olde one. They don't know the community well enough to know how people will react.

For a small/medium-sized user base on a home server, I'd definitely go with FluxBB. Lightweight, fast, works with sqlite alone and requires virtually no setup.
