i just got from a nights stay at my friends place. after spended a little bit of time on his computer, i am glad to back on my own.
see, his dad installed a net nanny program called Cyber Sitter -and it sucks ass! normally he can't do ANYTHING on that comp, but we have worked out a few work arounds for him. basically we delete the Net98 registry key inbetween every action, and that will let him get on AIM or open IE. but that is about it. no matter what we try, he can't download anything, open STEAM, or join servers on Halo. (which i freak'n bought him for his b-day!!!!)
we messed with stuff for about an hour while we were over there. we could simply break the damn thing, but then his dad would get really pissed and beat the crap out of all of us. we were basically looking for a way to dissable/enable it. we tryed renaming one of its important registry keys, but upon reboot, the key gets regenerated. we also tryed renaming the .exe but it was protected. my l33t haxz0r friends also tryed some other stuff but it was a bit over my head.
anyway right now, one of these these uber smarty friends of mine is thinking that we could have booted the computer in safe mode, renamed the .exe, and set that registry key to NULL. too bad we aren't there anymore to do it.
uh, anyway just venting. anybody care to aid our attempts at dissabling Cyber Sitter so we can finally play CS with my friend again?

Damn, that sucks. My father used to put such programs on the computer(for my sister and I), but they never worked right either. Now, since I have my own computer, I haven't put any on(why would I?)
Anyway, that safe mode thing should work, it makes sense. In fact, you might be able to uninstall the damn thing from safe mode as well.

Break and blame it on a virus.
Or there's always Knoppix.

Oh i remember when my dad installed a program for us (My brother and I) for the internet and gave us an amount to i-net on when we had 56k internet.
I used to know 4 by passes, now I only know 2
1. Leave the confirmation window open and internet away
2. Everytime you where done with internetting just shut down the PC the hard way (pull the plus or something similar;)), that way your accounts money was still the same cause it didn't registered it:)
Cyber sitter sux indeed, what should your friend do if he has to make an essay for school about something and he really needs the internet??

My parents have a neat securtiy feature on my computer...its called Earthlink intenet access...the concept is simple, you cant download nuaghty files or play net games if you cant even get a stable connection for more that 5 minutes.... I MISS MY 100MBS T1 LINE!!!!!! :((

Easy. And the skills of your "l33t haxz0r friends" are worth a shit, just like those digital Nannies. ;)
If a program can regenerate it's own keys, it must be started everytime with Windows, even before the user has access to the system. So, there are 3 places where you can put or link a file to make it starting automatically: The Autostart folder (either for a specific user or for all users, depending on the OS), the registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run or
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run (if you login under a special username). Older programs might add something in win.ini or system.ini, but that's rather rare. So check these places for entries of the exe of CyberSitter and delete them (But make a copy / export them, so you can restore the settings!). Reboot and you have unlimited possibilities again! :)

No, the program has, so his dad shouldn't install it no more! :)

that reminds me of the time that my friend installed netscape on my computer. I almost kicked his ass for that one (he wanted to watch a britney spears video, ya know the skank.) It took me months to find the damn program/registry key that kept closing our internet browsers because of its stupid "wuality feedback agent".
My parents did child protection the smart and logical way. They didn't get the internet till I was old enough. Wow! Thats a concept that works! If they need the internet then just get a machine and lock it up in their room. Oh my Gosh! Its amazing, the solutions you can come up with when you use your brain.....

I have a similar problem with that quality feedback thing. Sometimes in Firefox, it closes down the browser and the netscape quality feedback agent pops up. How do I fix that?

its in the registry, first before I give you ANY direction on how to do this I suggest you backup anything that has any sentamental value to you.
go into start and run, then type regedit. once you are in press CTRL+F (or go into find.)
and search for netscape. Most likely you will be looking for a folder titled "Netscape" or netscape quality feedback agent. Just delete the offending registry key(s) and that should take care of it. You will have to find it yourself as I was not able to replicate the problem and find where its source is.
I excersize warning in doing this, please have extensive knowledge about the registry and have some knowledge of what you are doing as one wrong move could send your windows installation down the draim thus making it unbootable (happened to me when I was removing the "Supernova" worm from my computer, after I removed the file and deleted its registry keys (also had to unleech it because it started with explorer I.E. explorer.exe -(whatever the file was called) in the registry).
I think my system is getting to the point where I need to back everything up and reload. I will do that once I get my dvd burner, since thats what I mostly use burners for is backups anyway.

Check this out http://www.cexx.org/censware.htm> I successfully diabled cybersitter thanks to this site! The one thing about the "Regedit" program is its not free. Theres a free trial version on download.com, but it won't do the job without the full version. Its 20 bucks, not bad at all. Make sure to get RegEditr 2.2. That's what worked for me. Hope this helps, cybersitter sucks ass.
