Hi everyone...

I decided to learn about Doom editing once My other thread didn't get much replies...

So I'll be putting anytime not so soon a bunch of maps together in a wad and call it Iron Maiden. Yeah... maps named after songs... Anyway, it won't be anything you'll be wanting to play, but it'll serve as practicing.

Later I'll start my already mentioned project, wich I'll call Redoom or Doom: Virus. Or... maybe Doom: The quest for the Dark Claw (nah... too strifish...).

Anyway... here are my doubts:
1) It seens I can't add anything to Doom, just replace original resources. Is this right?
2)How can I change a level's music and name displayed in automap screen (and at the beginning of a level)?
3)How can I add those nice texts wich appear between some levels in Doom 2 and at the end of an episode in 1?

Oh... and I'm using Zdoom, DoomBuilder and XME, so keep that in mind while answering.

Hehe... Just remembered:"
4) What the hell is the "scrollup" and the "scrolldn" buttons Doom Builder refers to? The ones that are used for zooming in and out and other things? I know I could just change it... but I'm curious.

These are alot of plans for someone new to Doom wad editing.

I would suggest getting real comfortable (to the point where you dream it) with your Chosen map editor.

To change lots of things you can get programs like dehacked etc.

Go to http://www.doomworld.com and look in there editing and utilities section for programs that hack the doom EXE and can alter the doom IWAD (DOOM.WAD, DOOM2.WAD etc).

Also, get The Unofficial Doom Specifications by Matthew S. Fell and read it daily.

Also there is a tutorial that tells you how to edit the music, intro and outro screens, textures, sprites etc. I can't remember the URL so google for it.

Get WadAuthor! Perfect for newbies. I still use it as the only one right for me. To do music, you need to first find some way to make midis, then there is a program made by Id Software to convert them to Doom .mus files.

Doom is NOT ever going to play Bruce "Air raid Siren" Dickenson's" VOICE!!!

If it did play his voice that would be quite scary.

ZDoom supports straight MP3s. So yes, Doom can play his voice.

1) You can add in you're own things. but editers wont list them. They are programed to just list the default things in doom. There is away to add custom objects in. but I dunno how.

2) something called a dehacked file :P you can edit the levels name and such. as for music. replace the existing music with a file of you're own.

3) in xwe or something look around for the text. you can view the letters and you can edit them.

and yes stick with Doom Builder. it's good for new people as well as the pros. It's also the most easy to use.

1). You have to create what is called a decorate lump in notepad, and import it into the level with XWE or Wintex. I have the commands and script formats written down somewhere amongst my clutter.....

No one told me yet about the Doom Editor's buttons I've asked... (see the post that follows up the first)

Is the Dehacked file that one finished with the .deh extension?

Oh... and thanks for the tips guys.

The ScrollUp & ScrollDown keys defined by DooMbuilder correspond normaly to the MouseWheel...

Mouse wheel? I was afraid that could be the answer... You see... I don't have a mouse whell. :(

Oh... and I'm not planning to put Iron Maiden songs in the game... hehe... Just the names.

I asked about music because I thought I could simply select one of Doom's originals and assign it to my level without going inside those hard to handle wad modifications... Oh... well.

Hey! Talking about that... is it possible to change a hub's music? Like... the first time I enter it, it plays a song... next time it plays a different one? It's not something like random. Just to enphatize an atmosphere change like turning on the lights.

It can definitely be done with some world-scope variables in place and some ACS scripting.

I'm already doing my first map guys.

Thanks to Dr. Sleep's Doom Builder tut.

The map is being made for pure Ultimate Doom. But I'm testing it in Zdoom and Jdoom.

It's something like a chapel and it's not going to be something enourmous like most maps I see today. I want it to be just as big as any of Ult. Doom's originals.

Map making is rather simple, but I haven't tested the port modes on Doom Builder yet.

After I finish my first bunch of maps I'll give ZDoom mode a try. I've heard about tutorials for it in ZDoom's page.

Hey, is there any port where I can align flats like normal wall textures?

Hey, is there any port where I can align flats like normal wall textures?
No, that's impossible. The flats are aligned on a 64x64 grid, but with Legacy and ZDoom (perhaps more) you can use larger flats. Actually, in ZDoom you can use any graphics for anything, that means you can use CEIL5_2 on a wall and ZZZFACE4 on the ceiling...

Hum... using any texture I want anywhere is nice. Better than the limited amount of flats Doom got...

Like what was said, legacy can use flats that are the size of the walls. but uyou need to make it as a few flat texture, you can't just take a wall texture and stick it on the floor. you have to save it as a flat. then it can be used.

I stand (or sit) corrected then, Darkhaven. I never got ZDoom to work at all, and no one seems to support the GL version. So it will play mp3 and the other sounds too?

Nothing like going through a map with Slayer or Dimmu Borgir, except maybe hearing those shotgun blasts and enemies cry. :)
