View Full Version : High-Res Jheretic monster skins: doable?
July 13th, 2004, 05:27 PM
I recently went over my hard drive and found my original .PSD files for the jheretic monsters. These were made at double the resolution of 512x512 instead of 256x256.
I can easily supply them - but can they be included in jheretic or do they HAVE to be in low res?
If anyone (Skyjake if you're out there) thinks it can be done, I can supply the skin files.....
I don't think that today's powerhouse computers will have any problems with higher resolution skins - heck, we're all using the high-res TEXTURE packs without any trouble.....

well, danij's demon doom skin was 1024x1024 if my memory serves me right, so I guess it can be done the only problem might be precaching

Yeah theres no problem on Doomsdays part. It's only users videocards where problems may be caused by poor fillrate or lack of video ram.
As long as they're in 8bit colour you should be ok.

I recall that the current skins in the model pack are PCX images. Doomsday generally prefers PNG/TGA over PCX, so if you save the PSDs as PNGs (so that they are compressed but it's lossless) and they're put in the same directories with the PCX skins, Doomsday should use them without any changes to the definition files.
But please note that I have made a number of modifications to the PCX skins, so your originals may not look the same (gamma, brightness, tone, some details, etc.). Also, as you remember, the Maulotaur skin was more heavily edited.

I allready resaved all Textures of the current jDRP and other Packs/Sources to PNG.
To get PNG's as small as possible i first save PCX/TGA to PNG with highest compression ratio (9), there's no loss in quality.
I also resave PNG's with highest compression ratio as those are not allways saved with maximum setting.
Then i run Pngcrush on every PNG with cmdline: pngcrush -brute -fix -reduce -rem allb *.png
This makes PNG's most of the time even smaller. It's essential to (re)save PNG's with highest compression before running
Pngcrush on them to gain smallest size. Again there's no loss in quality.
PCX/TGA-Files which are replaced by PNG's are not needed anymore and can be savely removed.
Download latest version of Pngcrush (http://easynews.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/pmt/pngcrush-1.5.10-win32.zip) here.

I'll be starting up working on and refining the higher res textures soon - I'll have to re-tweak a lot of them since I left out details that can now be added. Look for updates soon :)

I'll make a 512x512x24 for my garg when I get to the texturing bit.
