I haven't used this for a while and then i remembered how dirty and grainy it makes the textures- look at what it does to un-beautify Envid's exit door: http://members.dodo.net.au/~amac/exit.jpg

I seem to remember alot of interest in it. Does anyone like using it- if so why?

It does a great job on the original textures. But it doesn't seemt o do as much, and even destroys some of the newer, hi-res textures.

Try lowering the contrast of it with the control panel. Its no wonder you dont like them when they are turned up that much, heh.

Yeah what Chilvence said. They are only there so that when you get REALLY close to a wall you don't see a blury mess. They look a lot better on the original textures as Tylenol said (I don't use the hires textures because I hate more textures than I like) but some of them are a bit crap (thinks of wood and the fact that theres a detail texture for liquids*confused* *crazy*).

Someone needs to do a better pack IMO. These were good but now we need something better.

Yes - i've tried it now with original textures and custom mods that use their own textures - it definitely improves them . But with the "hi-res" textures, unless the contrast is turned right down, it looks grainy.
Very useful when running custom mods.

Subwolf made the first detail texture pack, but where has he been lately?

I don't use detail textures unless I turn off hires. They do a pretty good job on the standard textures, though.

I don't use anymore the hires textures (waitinf for better ones ?). I only use the details pk3 which is very much closer of the doom feeling.

details.pk3 + JDRP + JDUI + JDEP + some .deds = Perfect Doom

Where do you get this details.pk3? I want it.

It's on the HQ under "Textures".

Does anyone know how to extract and edit the detail textures? Standard programs like XWE and Wintex mess them up. I wish to edit (only minor things, i'm definetly no artist) some of them for a mod I'm working on.

I still use NWT (old DOS prog) that works for editing detail textures. XWE and Wintex try to be too clever when you import an image cos they automatically convert to Doom colours. If theres an option to import a file or lump try that instead.

Thanks. :)
I'll have a look at NWT shortly.

yeh you guys are right... they do kinda overkill the high res textures. But this is what i really really love:

The detail on the lights is really really cool. imo! :)
(It's so simple but it looks magnificent, i think!)

Except for the fact that it's on the metal.

I jsut d/led it, and it does a great job on DooM's original textures.

Except for the fact that it's on the metal.
Thats another thing that shaders will be able to fix. You'd simply create a low res mask texture of the bits you don't want detailed.

Oh btw, whats this i read about turning the contrast down....
Isnt that the global contrast for the entire screen?

You cant turn it down for the details.pk3 only right?

They mean texture contrast. I think it is on the textures panel in the control panel?

where did doomer get that wickid texture pack, I am still using the retexturing project with the 200MB download files which aren't as good in my opinion.

What you you guys say if I created some new detail textures and added them to the jDRP?

I'm just getting tired of them and in particular the very poor marble ones.
