Daaaaaaamn. I sure wish I would have come across Legacy a LOOOOOOOONG time ago. I sure as hell didn't have to look twice when I seen that the torches and floor lamps ACTUALLY produce light!! That is just awesome. I still can't believe it. Doom is now a totally new game for me. :D

ZDoom for features, jDoom for graphics. Legacy is the middle ground.

Welcome to the NewDoom. :D
If you like Legacy then you may want to try some of the other Source Ports.
ZDoom: http://zdoom.org/
ZDoomGL: http://zdoomgl.mancubus.net/
JDoom: http://www.doomsdayhq.com/

All very good ports. Imagine if they all came together as one.:D *drools*

Yep, JDoom is the best for sheer eye-candy. Wish they would add the Legacy "splats" though! :D
I've never been able to get ZDoom to run in GL. Anyone know a good page with setup instructions? Tried several times/versions including just last week, and it always tells me some file is missing or corrupt.

Legacy type blood "splats" (I assume you mean the extra blood sprites that stay on the floor in Legacy) are in Jdoom's JDRP. If you only want the "splats" and not the models just extract and solely use the particles pk3 from it. Though the JDRP's "splats" are only when a monster dies, while Legacy's are used for everything except that.
I agree that it's Doomsday (Jdoom) for graphics, Zdoom for features/editing and Legacys for a middle of the road option.
I'd recommend downloading them all as theres allot of great pwads and mods for them all.

Thanks Vermil. I had the JDRP installed, but all the blood and shot splats were blue. So I unchecked it and prefer to use the old model pack with Cheb's "more blood" instead. I didn't see any option to change blood color.
The md2 models are cool, and I'm sure those guys spent an awful lot of time making them, but I feel the original sprites are much more frightening. (even though they are wrong when looking up or down at them.) Killing most of them seems like putting them out of their misery, not like, "Wow, just saved my ass from some terrible baddy." :)

I prefer the ZDOOM blood splats. They look cool. Although Legacy gives it that old look which I love.:)
I know MoP. These gusy are always competing. IMO they're should be a contest on this sort of thing. But yes, there would be so much work to be done it wouldn't see the light of day for years.

I asked on another thread, but may as well ask here too since no one yet has answered:
What is actually needed to get ZDoom to work in GL? I tried it twice now and both times it crashes on starting and tells me I am missing some file.
No, I wasn't bright enough to copy this error message. I'll try a third time and see.

ZDoom does not run in OpenGL.
ZDoomGL, which is an entirely different project, by another person, is what you are looking for. http://zdoomgl.mancubus.net/

Yeah, Zdoom splats rule.
But as Hexagon said, the port-specific mods/maps which come out make most ports worth getting.

I think the 3D in legacy makes it a bit more than merely middle ground, it has nice graphics in hardware mode, plenty of features, all it lacks is slopes and as some clever person once pointed out 'steps do the same as a slope'

all it lacks is slopesWRONG! Legacy's fraggle script is far inferior to ZDoom's ACS scripting. and as some clever person once pointed out 'steps do the same as a slope' not really.
and the 3D floors, yeah they are nice.

I'm having soooo much more fun now making maps and playing them with Legacy GL, but if I try to run a map I just made, Legacy will load the map, then right before it's supposed to start, it'll kick me to the desktop and i'll get an error message saying, "signal_handler() : segment violation" And after trying to load it 5 or 6 times, then it works.

thats odd, ask about that in the legacy forum
About wether fragglescript or acs is best, Im not bothered, I have no intention of using either so the 3D floors swing it for me (and the nice opengl graphics)
