Grand Unified Theory Of Everything
I'm no stranger to jDoom. I had been following it's progress with great interest from nearly the Beginning(tm). For the last six months I have been using nothing but Linux and it is only now, with the release of the release candidates for 1.8, have i been able to enjoy the pleasures of doomsday once again. To my utter delight there seems to have been a flurry of activity in the resource department. So much in fact, that I'm going dizzy trying to track it all down! I've been playing around with whats available and i must say i'm quite impressed. "GET TO THE POINT!" I hear you all scream. ok ok I'm getting there. Now what delightful resources are there?
jDRP
jDTP
jDED
jDUI
not to mention the alternative weapon packs, effect patches, intermission screens , etc.
So... There are obviously different people working on different things. Now the last thing I am trying to do is upset anyone so be patient with me here. What I propose (or maybe I should say 'what I am willing to provide) is this. I am willing to host all of the jPacks on a single website. If this idea is liked I will buy a 2year hosting package (starting from the beginning of september). I've already looked at the options and the site will be a .co.uk domain (jdoomresources.co.uk anyone?) with unlimited bandwidth and 1gb storage (I think this would be enough to keep everyone happy...agree/disagree?). There would be a subdomain for each of the jPacks with ftp access for the maintainer of each pack for hosting files and a website. Each subdomain would be maintained by the person in charge of that jpack (or someone nominated by them). Hopefully a common colour scheme/theme would be used throughout the site but it would be ultimately up to the individual jpack authors who decide what they want to do. I should add that people may want to start another jPack to deal with different aspects of jDoom resources and that is welcome to. This offer is really open to everyone.
OK so why do i want 2 do this? Well a few reasons really? -
1) SO jdoom users can find all of the wonderful resources in one wonderful place
2) To help all of the different jPack authors work together and combine their efforts. And to make sure no one steps on anyone elses toes (I know you all work together at the moment to so degree or another but I am dreaming of the best of everybody's work coming together in one place.
3) So we have somewhere to host all those large files (i'm thinking of textures especially) - afterall not everybody has access to large online storage.
Ok, so some of you are probably saying "who is this guy?! what a pretentious little runt. everything is fine as it is!". If thats the case then thats fine. If you dont like my idea then it wont happen. No big deal :) It's an offer not a demand :)
So what are your thoughts? This post is aimed mostly at jPack authors but i want to hear everyones opinion. I might have missed some things out so the best way to understand is to ask questions.
Ciao
