You make a new wad file, and (copying the file names of the weapons in doom) replace the frames with ones you want.

Yeah, what he said. For example, if you want to replace the pistol frames with, say, the HACX pistol...
FOR WINTEX:
Create a new folder with the name no longer than eight characters long. Then, create a subfolder named "SPRITES" (without the quotation marks of course). Then inside that folder (make sure you have the actual art files on your HD), paste your new art files inside that folder.
The frames for the pistol are:
PISGA0 - idle frame
PISGB0 - 2nd frame/firing frame/4th frame
PISGC0 - 3rd frame/refire frame
PISFA0 - muzzle flash
FOR XWE:
Create a new wad with any name. Then, make a new entry named S_START or SS_START. Then, make 4 new entries entitled PISGA0, PISGB0, PISGC0 and PISFA0. They can be in any order. Then, replace the entries with your images. Make a new entry called S_END. (Optional) Then goto FILE->CLEAN UP to save space on your HD.
FOR NWT:
Create a new wad with any name. Then, create a blank entry with the name S_START. Then, import your images and rename them PISGA0, PISGB0, PISGC0, and PISFA0. Explanation on how to order your frames is listed above. Finally, add a blank entry named S_END.
Now you have a working replacement for the pistol.

well, if you are a beginner, i recommend whacked for dehacked editing. use a decent quality paint program for editing or touching up the sprites. i use photoshop, but for a long time i got away with pc paintbrush, to this day as far as doom editing is concerned, photoshop still can't beat some of the simple tasks pc paintrush could do without the fuss. try and find it on kazza maybe, since pc paintbrush, i believe, is abandonware now.yeah, create a new wad file, it doesn't even need a map in it, and paste all the doom sprites in it. whacked gives a good small description of what animation frame does what, and displays all the attributes of each said frame. so, change the actions to match the simulated nature of the new gun. remember to work in steps, whenever i make a somewhat drastic change during the evolution of the project i usually save as another file. if the change is good i delete the previous, if bad, i go back to previous.
i recommend you create a wad with just the gun sprites, and just play with whacked or dehacked to see what you can do. also, analyze the deh files of any interesting gun patch you may find, and try to see if you can emulate whatever the author did in dehacked to make the guns act that way. this is good practice. if it contains new sprites, you will have to study the level while playing, and use wintex to view the raw sprites.
Oh yeah, wintex will be your best friend. thats what you need to arrange all the crap you edit.

oh, check this out:
http://www.geocities.com/rasputin1980/newguns.html
this is a project i did a bit of go that just changes the guns, specifically to be used in dm play. its a wad file that contains nothing but new gun sprites, it comes with three diff. dehacked patches to run seperately(never together). each dehacked patch arranges diff. attributes to the guns actions and the animations used or discarded. this means each patch offers you a different gun lineup. you will see to accomodate the presence of so many diff guns, i used the monster animations as more gun sprites. therefore, deathmatch play only for a second reason- all the sprites for the monsters have been taken. some of the patches are easier to study than others, simply because they use some other objects sprite. anyways, this is a take on a different set of guns, maybe it will give you some ideas.

Yes, replacing sprites in new pwad, are easy, but remember, that, if you want to run this wad in original doom, you must add all sprites from IWAD.

Oh! Nevermind, you see, I think it's because I have no .exe files for doom. It came in the Doom Collector's Edition with Doom95. What do I do?
