View Full Version : Looking for Heroes.wad (and name of another wad file)

Okay, I've looked all over for this. I've checked google, and the forum here. All I could find was a link to a webpage that doesn't exist anymore (home.net is long dead) and although I do have the PC Gamer magazine that discusses the megawad, my CD was lent to a friend many years ago and is now considered lost.

Does anyone have this? I've seen several links to HEROES2.WAD but no dice with this (The original HEROES.WAD had 36 levels done).

Also, I remember there being a level with a high apartment complex area in a city with some pretty good detail for the inside of the actual apartments including fridges, stoves and sinks, for Doom 2. But I can't remember the name for the life of me. Any ideas what the name could be? Thanks!

Here it is:
http://www.giffer.com/public/dos/pgam2/Files/HEROEZ.ZIP
(from here (http://www.giffer.com/public/dos/pgam2/gam20262.htm) - this is the original wad)

Or:
http://member.newsguy.com/~windoze/files/HEROES.ZIP
(from here (http://member.newsguy.com/~windoze/) - some sounds removed from the wad)

If you like this wad, then you may be interested in watching Never_Again's nice demopack (ftp://competn.doom2.net:8002/incoming/sda/heroes_na.zip).

Can't help with your second question; your information is kind of vague.

Thank you so much yabbacard. Playing this wad for 3 minutes reminded me why I've wanted this megawad for so long!

Now the other question is (for anyone of course) which recent Doom Port would a megawad like this (and others) work with? I've tried Legacy Doom latest for Windows, but I see the "hall of mirrors" problem occasionally in various areas in levels. This seems to happen with several other wads I've tried as well (such as the Mountain King Deathmatch wad file)? I do like the deathmatch bots in Legacy, it's such a shame Doomsday doesn't have them.

Yes, this is certainly one of the better compilation wads, with a lot of thought and effort put into choosing and modifying the maps.

I don't think it has anything that would be broken by using one of the "advanced" ports (e.g. Zdoom, Legacy or jDoom), but there might be some visual problems in OpenGL mode (from your comment, it sounds like there are). The wad was created before there were GL ports, so software rendering ought to work fine with it (Legacy has a software renderer, though it tends to be a bit slow at higher resolutions).

I watched Never_Again's demos using GLBoom (it has demo compatibility with the original game, which he used to record) and don't recall any significant visual problems (it seems to be a bit more forgiving of GL issues than Legacy). Prboom and Eternity should also be OK.

If you desperately want to play it with Legacy in OpenGL mode, then I believe Zennode should help - but that changes the wad itself, which you may not want to do.
