Why is Doom PSX such a big deal? I'm not criticizing it or anything, I just don't see how it's any better than the PC game.

I am assuming you haven't played it.

Well, it's really horribly jerky in places, and the detail in maps was stripped down a bit. BUT, it did have things like a more modern soundtrack, some new maps and lots of coloured lighting and a nicer super-shotgun.

some of the PSX only maps are pretty cool, i think. i always liked Hell Gate. the animated skies are really sweet, something not many of us have ever had the patience to make even today.

that game was the first taste of doom i had.

I want to make an animated sky, I am assuming that it can be done easily in Doomsday via a .ded file.

probably. i'm pretty sure the Absolution guys did it via .ded files for the flaming skies.

Why is Doom PSX such a big deal? Is it? *spin*
I'm not criticizing it or anything, I just don't see how it's any better than the PC game. IMHO I don't think it's better than the PC version; but I do like the music more, and the fact you have 59 maps in one package, including some great ones not originally available anywhere else... and you can plug the thing right into a TV/receiver if you want (I always liked playing Doom in the dark, on a couch in front of a big TV).

However I do think it's better than all the other console ports of the orginal game. (Not counting Doom 64, here. ;) )

(Not counting Doom 64, here. ;) ) i agree. discounting Doom64, seeing how it was its own game whilest the other ports were still basically doom and doom2, PSX doom was really the only one that wasn't harshly dismembered or funk-dified for performance.

look at doom on the snes. it had no flats, and the monsters only had front frames - making it impossible to sneak up on them.

I've never played Doom 64 for real, but I've played Doom 64 TC, which is essentially the same thing. I liked the atmosphere that the music generated during gameplay, The game itself just felt much more immersive then it had in Dooms 1-2. Only thing I didn't like was the monsters :( they could have been made better...

I do have all PSX Doom games, (2X both of them, for multiplayer). My first Doom game I got was Final Doom (PSX). First, I didn't really like it, because of the sounds and music, but soon after I found it very good.

I think PSX Doom has some great levels, especially I like those PSX only maps, The Marshes, Twilight Descends, both of them are excellent deathmatch levels. Me and a friend completed both games on coop, that was great, we still play coop and DM at times.

I did buy Doom 64 last year (lucky to find one around here). That's another great game, it's much more difficult than other console Doom games I've played.

Yea on the N64 doom64 is alot harder then it's counter-part on the pc.

Took me nearly 6 weeks to complete it (whilst playing every day, on the second toughest level)

I kind of liked the new mosters in D64 better.

I kind of liked the new mosters in D64 better. the cacos, pain elements, demons, and arachnitrons are badass, but the others are...eh, not as badass...

I actually found the controls much more fluid than the PC versions. The only thing that really bothered me was the fact that some textures were missing (not HOM, but original ones) and some of the Doom II maps were actuually missing.

Anyone every played Duke 3D on Sega Megadrive? (I think, I only played it via the emulator Genesis). Chppy framerate, no flats, and no different floors, plus enemies disappear after something like 3 seconds.

I personally think that the PSX version far surpasses the original PC version in several ways:

1. Scarier and just plain better ambient music and sound
2. More maps
3. More cool special effects (colored lights + flaming skies)

This is only 3 reasons it's a whole lot better...

Oh, btw, hi.

Ambient music is just something great, and it's creating a nice atmosphere (First it didn't like the music, now I do) I think PSX Final Doom new ambient tracks are great (which weren't included in the original pSX Doom)

Well for Doom 64 to progress at a similar rate to the PC games, better monsters (like in 3D) weren't really an option. That is, unless you're talking about the absolutely sub-par imps. Then I agree.

Aside from the fact that the Mac Version of Doom had better screen resolutions etc while PC doomers were still on their piddly little res and I of course consider the mac versions my all time favorite.

Aside from the Mac Dooms the best console Doom in my opinion was Doom for Atari Jaguar.

Full screen graphics, decent frame rates, good resolution, Network Play... doesn't get any better than that on a console. Go Jaguar! Haha.

Never played it on the Jaguar. The only Atari I've ever played was the 2600 - good times.

hmm... well, the atari jaguar and the atari 2600 are beasts of two different flavors haha.

Ever notice that many of these threads are now boiling down to us just talking?

Well, if every single post had to have valuable information in it there wouldn't be very many Message Boards.
