today i had tyo get a new cpu fan. my other one burnt out
and thankfully my cpu didnt overheat before i did

and the cause of this was, i left my computer on 24/7 for about 2 years. id say 90% of the time
this computer techie told me that its good for it rather then turning it on and off
well it seems he was wrong, my other older computer which iv turned off and on since iv had it. the fan is still working great.

what do you think? maybe it was just a cheap fan

Well, the fan was bound to die after about 2yrs of being on, it is better for a computer to be on instead of turning it on and off, its better for the hard drive, as boot-up is its hardest time. I turn mine off because it makes too much noise, I'd get done for leaving it on because of the electricity bill, and it would just get too hot, plus I don't really like leaving it on for too long.

Yeah, the fan bearings must've worn out, remember that it is pretty much all plastic, and they go about 4000-6000rpm, thats a lot of revolutions a day (5,760,000-8,640,000). Eventually, you'll get a bit of dust in there, and the slow grinding begins.

he is correct, they generally have an operating time of 35,000-75,000. The most common being around 50,000 I believe. it doesn't matter if you turn off your computer or leave it on. your computer will last longer when its turned off because of ots off state but either way all componets have a certain time of which they live. For instance the fan and that its "decay timer" as the hours tick down the more it dies (I made up the decay time reference to better explain my point). generally I am not suprised, my parents pentium 2 lasted over 5 years but somewhere in 2003 the fan emitted strange noises which signals its death is approaching, its a natural cycle.

Maybe they shouldn't have fixed that issue with Windows hanging after being on for 49.7 days.

i want liquid cooling :) that would be sweet
better then fans, but there really noisey

yea, i agree with you guys say, i can probably do both
if im not around to use it or at night or something i can just turn it off. just trying to reduce the amount of time its on as much as i can :p since im on it alot

windows used to hang after 49.7 days?

Thats on a good day.:D
But that brings up a good point. I would like to see the person who found that flaw since it was only on 9x.

Sparky

they didnt find the flaw
winXP is based on win2000 which has always had awesome performance. so thats why it runs so great. and maybe even better

when i had win98 and winME, they would be going at turtle speed after 5 hours. so i dont know how you would be able to get to 49.7 days :)

uhhhh if you factor in the fact you use a hell of a lot less fans for water cooling then its quieter, and the fans on the radiator aren't that loud unless you mount a tornado on it.

EDIT: my experience with windows 2000 was it was slow and not very compatable with my software so it was useless to me plus eventually something got corrupt (dunno how since I don't mess around with windows stuff, no need anyway). Windows 98 and SE I had good experiences with them but they are old and XP has fit all my needs so far but that is jsut my opinion.

They have figured out a way to pump the water (not WATER per say more of a solution) through hair size pipes, The pump needs no fan and works 100% silent. Looking for a link to give more info. It is Sweet!

I can't seem to find the link. it was on Screen Savers last summer I think.

oh yeah cooligy, I heard about them. I hear they use spinnning disks to cool the water or something. I forget how they do it but it was interesting.

Nope, no moving parts... Thats the thing, that is why it's 100% silent. ;)

Designed with no moving parts, Cooligy’s Electrokinetic Pump is a silent and reliable solution for fluid cooling of mainstream computers. Electrokinetic fluid movement provides the flow rate and pressure required for microchannel cooling.

I must have read an early beta design concept because it talked about the porous glass disks spinning, either that or the autoor of the magazine was a complete idiot. Either way it soulds interesting.

This is the site where I got a few of the things for my computer from. Check out these links for some 'different CPU coolers.

I was thinking if I got another heatsink+fan combo hat I might get this one :Zalman CNPS7000A-Cu
this one: ThermalRight SP-94
This one:

but I might just get a peltier or voodoo's water cooling instead. if I can find a damn link to the voodoo water cooling device.

here is a look at the thermaltake peltier device I was talking about: http://www.thermaltake.com/coolers/subzero/subzero4g.htm#p4

the one that works for an athlon cooler also works for a pentium 3 just in case you wanted to chill that Pentium 3 of yours. Hopefully I can mod the heatsink to a better one or atleast the fan as I am sure I can get a better heatsink.

I choose this one because I am not experienced enough to setup my own peltier device nor am I experienced enough to prevent condensation so I jsut though I would get a premade kit to start out with.

unless someone has ideas.

I want a quiter PSU fan, mine makes so much noise, that when I shut down, and the comp goes off, my ears have to adjust to the silence. Can PSU fans be upgraded? The air still comes out pretty hot. I'm going to get a couple of 120mm case fans for my comp, as my case supports them. One at the back, taking air in, that will blow nice cold air on the back of the card, and one at the front, taking air out.

you can mod them yourself by splicing wires. I can write a guide on how to do it because I done that kind of thing often. I got power supply fans to work as case exaust and intakes. Just have the approperate tools.

If you want to know how to do that then contact me through aim: blackhawktyber
or yahoo messanger: tyberious777

I'll talk to ya some time in the week, you can contact me, by looking at my profile. I'd be interested in 'talkin to 'ya. You might even be the person to test the first map of my TC (as long as you don't distribute it ;))

I don't share secrets so you wont have to worry. I will just say you aren't the only one to trust me with something secret in the forums.

you would be best contacting me either on friday or the weekend I would like to reserve monday and thursday for actually getting some work done. Its finals week.

I can talk to you nowish, or tomorrow (well today, but later on, as its 1am here atm ;)) Just give me an email, and I'll send you the wad and the .ded file that goes with it. Its only MAP01, but I did spend a bit of time on it. You'll have to wait a while, because I'm at my mums house atm, and all my TC stuff is on my comp at my dads house. I'm going there on Friday, but I'm going on holiday, so I won't be able to send it until I get back. (It's only a weekend anyhow). I don't really mind if it gets around, because the first map doesn't feature anything new, it's just a pretty good map.

It's actually the 4th version of that map, all the others pretty much sucked.
