View Full Version : Best console. (No, seriously.)

I just wanted to know what you thought the best console was. I don't want it to break into a bout of serious bitching, as I know that can easily happen. So all I want, is your supported console, and why you like it so much. It doesn't have to be the one that you have now, it can be anything. Oh, and no bitching about other peoples choices, they are entitled to their own flawed view.

Me?
I would have to go for the Dreamcast.
1: It was around far before any other's.
2: It had the online play working perfectly, and with some real innovations.
3: The visual memory cards rocked!
4: The games were really fun and quirky.
5: They were the first to admit that they had no chance when the PS2 came out, and bowed out when they needed to.

I have nothing to add. I 150% agree with you. The dreamcast, hands down. It was just a perfect console all around, and still is. We love our dreamcast.

i never had a dreamcast, would love to buy one, but the best console i've ever owned would have to be the sega genesis, just great games, great controllers, great fun!

If it wasnt for mentally challeneged controller then I would say the X-box. Think about it: Built in Ethernet, Hard drive, Music Storage, X-box Live. Need I say more?

Instead, though, I am going to have to go with the Playstation 1. Functional, easy to use, and it had some great games on it. The PS2 and Dreamcast just wern't as innovative as the PSone. I did like the Dreamcast controller, however, and it had some of the greatest sports titles.

Hah the best system all around and still one of the best would have to be the Super Nintendo.I have dreamcast yea it was a good console but not as awsome as it was when i got my first super nintendo. Also Doom for super nintendo was awsome.Ive never owned a Playstation for the simple reason of the cheesy graphix compared to the nintendo 64 and ps'2 compared to the x-box and gamcube.THe palystation also didnt have that good games. The only ps games i liked where Tekken and there fighter jet games. But i never liked all the squares and cheap look of the games when you palyed them.

Mine is the Xbox. There are more FPS games that I like than any other console, ported or not. I loved the Dreamcast's online ability. I've actually posted here a couple times from the Dreamcast.

I though about buying one because when I had a look at Resident Evil: Code Veronica, I almost wet myself. But the Xbox has so much unlocked potential just waiting to be revealed and not to mention Halo 2.

Also Doom for super nintendo was awsome.

On the contrary, the SNES version of Doom was terrible. It was basically running with the Wolf3D engine. Even then, there were only the fronts of sprites, so you couldn't even sneak up on anything.

I'm trying as hard as I can not to hound you about what you said about PSX, but I will contain myself.

I think it may be a tie between the Playstation 2 and the Dreamcast for me. The controllers for DC were dreamy, and the graphics were superb too. The only problem with it, is that it didn't have many good games. It had a few, but not as many as Sony, or even Nintendo.

You can't argue that the Playstation wasn't a gold mine for RPGs, whether you liked it or not. I have many fond memories with my Playstations.

Depends on what games you like. For FPSes, even though I'm sure you've played these a billion times already, but Unreal Tournament and Quake III were both awesome on the DC. Strangly, though I detest football, the NFL2k* series were superb footbal games. Umm... What else... I haven't really played much other than those.

slyde. some games that are good for the dc, in my opinion.
Chu-chu rocket
Shenmue
Sonic adventure
sonic adventure 2
rc bandit(or something like that)
phantasy star online (dc had that years ago!)
shenmue 2
jet set radio.
Skies of arcadia
and any of the rpg's

That should keep you going for a while.

Plastation sucks..............Nintendo is better.PLay station always had a cheap look to its games compared to the Nintendo 64.As the ps2 has to the gamcubes.I dont like consols where the games have a bunch of squares and have a cheesy look to them(ex:playstation).

Good dreamcast games would be.
Powerstone2
Marvel Vs capcom 2
Draconus
Aero Wings 2

Hmmm. Could the fact that the Ps1 was 32 bit, while the N64 was 64 bit have anything to do with that? Don't be ignorant. I don't know what squares you're talking about. Most games with decent engines, even on the PS1, have more complex geometry than just cubes and squares. Besides, graphics aren't what games are all about. If you believe otherwise, you're an ignorant sheep.

Besides, Azrael said not to argue. This is his thread, so be curteous and do what he said.

Dangit Nomad, you beat me to it. Oh well.

PLay station always had a cheap look to its games compared to the Nintendo 64.

Polygon wise, yes, but not as far as texture mapping went. Since most carts for the N64 had limited space it was rare to see any real intensive textures in thier games. Playstation, on the other hand, had a CD rom drive which could hold as many textures as the developers wished to throw in. Take Metal Gear Solid, for example. There is no way this game could have been made for the N64, due to the N64 cartridge texture limits.

What did this mean for the average user? The Playstation offered decent 3d graphics, and awesome 2d - while with the N64 it was for the most part reversed. Thats what made the Playstation the RPG king of it's time, and thats also why it won the console wars of the late 90's.

I'd choose the Megadrive / Genesis over the Super Nintendo because the Megadrive has a lot of good under-rated games. The Super Nintendo had some nice RPGs and those RPGs had good music, but I can seldom find a game that is exclusive to the SNES that isn't an RPG and is good. Valis IV is the only game I can think off the top of my head that isn't an RPG and is worth playing. But, even Valis IV sucks on the SNES compared to the PC Engine version.

although i currently own an Xbox, im gonna have to go with dreamcast. ive seen games on dreamcast and they look incrazing(incredible + amazing). i always play it when im at my cousin's house. i think that my favorite dreamcast game would have to be tokyo extreme racer. that game will blow away need for speed underground any day! and no matter how hard ive looked, i cannot find it on xbox so i am lost. anyway, i think that dreamcast is the best console out there and if they could make a dreambox or an xcast i would be in heaven.

PS1 had 2 major flaws if you ask me, long load times (I got a 64 instead so I was used to instant loading) and lack of bilinear filtering. Interlacing can only hid much before your eyes bleed out from seeing giant pixels.

Very nicely spoken. Also you forgot about super mario world wich to me is likeone of the best SNES games around, dont forget F-zero,Super Mario karts,Zelda,Street fighter,NUnja turtles, mortal combat and many more.THere is no playstation game that can even come close to the greatness of a mario game. The genesis was good but still not as good as the SNES.The N64 also other than better graphix then the PS1 it loaded faster and had many awsome unmatched games like mario64 and F-ZeroX.ALl the Ps1 had is Crash Bandicock and MetalGay solid. And i never liked metal gear becuase there is no 1st person perspective, there is no fun in a game that plays itself.

*Ahem*?

MGS does have a first-person perspective, I think you need to win it after beating the game a few times, or by double tapping the view button, can't remember.

Still no console bashing. All consoles have their great games, PSX had the Tekken games, the Resident Evils, the Megamans, the Parappa's, etc.. Thy're fun.

And again, no pansy-console bashing in this thread. Fanboy wars is what I hate to see in such mature places like this.

Street Fighter II wasn't exclusive to the SNES, and neither was Mortal Kombat. They were on many systems and the arcade versions blew the console versions out of the water. Anyway, the original SF2 release for SNES didn't let you play as the final four and, IIRC, didn't allow many (or any) turbo stars.

Something you forgot to mention is that It is a Microsoft product :p. That's the major flaw.

My favourite console (if it counts) would have to be PCs. Think about it, Awesome graphics (for good pcs), totally customisable, CD/DVD burning, Internet access, DooM, games that you can mod, the list goes on.......

If you can't count the PC then my fav would be PS2, although I should get a Dreamcast if I ever find one...

I go for my dreamcast as well. Its like an arcade in your living room, and up until its demise every arcade fighting game was on Dreamcast.

What did this mean for the average user? The Playstation offered decent 3d graphics, and awesome 2d Actually from what I've heard, the PS had shoddy 2d functionality. You might look at games like Castlevania:SOTN and disagree, but thats because those 'sprites' were actually flat polygons. Notice how the sword familiar circled you for example, or how many of the games characters were segmented, even Alucard. Crappy 2d was also shown when the PS couldnt even make an arcade perfect version of the 'VS' (Capcom) games, where there was extreme slowdown and the tag team part was essentially ripped out. This is not because of PS power, for it could do more than that really, but to keep a moderately stable framerate it couldnt have too many 2d functions on the screen at once.

The Saturn had awesome 2d ports. And some cool original 2d games like Three Dirty Dwarves. 3d wasn't bad if time was spent optimising (Virtua Fighter 2), but unfortunately most 3d games were rushed ports.

That's similar to how the Genesis runs Master System carts with the Power Base Converter, the 68000 is bypassed and control is given to the Z80 (which controls sound in the Genesis).

Okay, I am starting to see a little arguing going on here. It is a little sporadic, but it is still there. Remember, no matter how much you disagree with someones opinion, they are entitled to it, so don't criticise what they have to say. No matter how stupid you think they are. The dreamcast seems to be doing well so far, as does the snes. Nice to see some real retro consoles in there as well. :D

I'm going to go with the Dreamcast, though there are certain pure classic games for the N64 that I've yet to see replaced (probably because I don't own a Dolphi... I mean, Gamecube), mainly in the multiplayer arena: Mario Kart 64, F-Zero X, Goldeneye, etc. I'm also a big fan of the Sega Master System, as some might have guessed from my avatar, but I think I'm in the minority there. I would probably be a massive Mega Drive (Genesis) fan, but unfortunately I only ever got to play it at my friend's house.

The one and only console I have ever owned was a megadrive, but I would have to say that the dreamcast was king of its time. It just had so much going for it; the controllers, the 4 ports, gdrom, the best graphics, and the whisper of internet gaming. If it had only had more strength behind it, it would have cleaned up.

They always did! Remember Alien Soldier and Gunstar Heroes on MegaDrive/Genesis?
I still have my MegaDrive under the bed, it seems to have a problem with the sound... and I don't have many games left, sold most of them on ebay. But it definitely was a great console, I liked it better that the SNES (because Nintendo didn't have the Sonic series, which is the best jump 'n' run series of all times, imo. Nothing's better than Sonic 3 boosted with the Sonic + Knuckles cartridge!!!).

The Dreamcast, though behind in specs for today's standards, was hands down the best console to ever come around, not just for its specs which were amazing, but for its emulation and homebrew potential as well.

Before Dreamcast I would have said 3DO, and after Dreamcast I can not help but say the XBOX, regardless if Ratchet and Clank or what ever is not on it, it has the best specs, and can push games the furthest, let alone it is the cheapest of them all when you consider how much you have to spend to upgrade the othere consoles to get Internet and Hard drive support, and that's still with a lack or RAM, Speed, and Graphical Effects that the XBOX provides.

I guess Sega is going through the same companies as they for the Dreamcast's guts, to manufacture there new Arcade hardware!!! :)

iori

The dreamcast is still alive to some degree in Japan. There are many shooters and fighters that are direct Naomi ports, making translation a breeze.

The arcades dont dominate the market here like they did a few years ago, and aside from the next release of Soul Calibur, or whatever, consoles will be in teh spotlight. In Japan however, (well.. more like Japan, Hong Kong, Korea) arcades still rule. King of Fighters enjoys a new release every year, as do many other games that the states hasnt even heard of. Most of these just straight down to dreamcast. Better for me. :D

For shooters and fighting games, you dont need English text anyway.

I don't even know where the next arcade here is. They are so rare! You find slot machines in almost every bar and pub, but no video games... :( I always look forward to go to Italy again, because there are some arcades or bars with videogames where we stay for vacancy! :)

Considering that Virtual Reality head sets are getting a lot better in quality since the crappy fair ground models, and that the price is $500 to $1000 for a good quality set, I'd say that, that's where video games are heading, starting with the Arcade which anymore, seems to thrive on interactive games that require more than a joystick and buttons...

...the devices that people can not afford or fit in there home.
