finally. i finally finished it. it took me forever, but i finished my computer. now heres my dilemma: i have a pretty good motherboard, asuse, with a vga slot. it has onboard graphics and sound. so, what video card should i get. the current specs of the computer are:

512 MB DDR DIMM RAM
2.4 GHz Intel Celeron processor
Asuse motherboard-hyper threading supported, FSB 533/400 MHz, integrated VIA ProSavage8 Graphics, Realtek 6-channel integrated audio codec, VGA port, usb 2.0, and other non-important stuff
40 GB hard drive 7200 RPM

i know absolutely nothing about video cards, their power, or their "goodness". so what are some options for video cards that i should get if i plan on playing Doom III on this pc?

scrolling in web browsers without a video card is a pain in the arse

How much are you willing to spend? Are willing to wait for the nex gen cards? You'll want to upgrade to a Pentium then take full advantage of modern decent video card.

In my desktop I've got a Geforce which does well for both windows work and games, if you don't go cutting edge with the graphics card you can pick up them fairy cheap OEM.

If you want to Play Doom III you will want a decent Video card such as a Radion 9600 or GForce 5, I would go with a 256meg card. I just picked up a GForce 5 fx 256mg for $135. It's like the Undertaker said, How much are you willing to spend...

Here are some good ones:

For playing original Doom, anything is great

For playing Doom 3:
Geforce Fx 5600 ULTRA - 150$ or over
Geforce FX 5700 ULTRA - 150$ or over
Geforce FX 5900 ULTRA -250$ or over
Geforce FX 5950 ULTRA -250$ or over

-----------------------------
ATI Radeon 9600 PRO/XT (either one) - around 150$
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro (owns) - 200$ or over
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (owns, but is tough on your budget) - 250$ or over

all of those are decent video cards and should at least run Doom 3 so that it is PLAYABLE.

(EBAY probably contains lower prices for those cards, so i would check there also, because lots of people are crazy enough to make VERY expensive video cards VERY cheap :D )
