View Full Version : Sprites Remake

I saw the remade textures for use with Risen3D. The textures are amazing! When you play Risen3D on high resolution with the new textures, the enemies stay a little strange 'cause their quality are lower than the others graphics. I could use 3D models, but they aren't very "pretty", the enemies act different and the game doesn't look like doom anymore :(. 2D enemies are the way :)
Is there any project to remake doom sprites? I think it would solve the only thing that is missing in doom.

Although lots of people make the comment (put name of port here) "game doesn't look like doom anymore", that is really only saying that you prefer something in DOOM that you don't like in the port.
None of the ports look like DOOM anymore - especially RISEN3D and JDOOM - which is a good thing. The rest boils down to your taste. I personally think the sprites look pretty bad compared to the models - even though a few of them could be improved, still better than sprites that are not accurate depending on the view: top/bottom/side.
That said, it would be nice to have new sprites, but then you get into a problem of quality. It's a lot of work to make all new sprites that look decent. Even more than the textures which took a long time to get where they are - because judging sprites is even more subjective.

There is very few decent hand-drawing sprite artists in the community unfortunately. Modellers are much easier to find these days.

I think I might be able to do something like that, but i'm really not sure. I can hires one sprite of every original monster sprite, but doing that for all the sprites in 8 directions for every movement is too hard hork.
I'm one of those rare ones who hates 3D modelling all together. i liked original 3D-shooters sprites much much much more, and they also look more real.

Also, it wouldn't be simply a case of re-drawing the sprites. Ports would have to be modified to support it first. Otherwise all the enemies will be really really big. :D

ZDOOM already supports hi-res sprites via a DEHACKED lump where you insert a scale value to make them any size you want. You can "shrink" the regular sprites and get a feel for how this looks. It's pretty good, although a sprite is always a sprite.
