Cain,
I tried your Golem/Mummy and Staff models for Heretic this weekend. I really like them, but the skins are too big (filesize) which makes the pk3 huge.

For example, here is how I greatly reduced the golem skin:
Resized from 1024x1024 to 512x512 (detailed enough)
Reduced colors from 24-bit to 8-bit (256 colors)
Saved texture as PNG instead of PCX (smaller filesize)
The result looks identical in-game but requires much less disk space and download time.

Here are some general rules for your model textures:
No texture should be larger than 512x512.
Textures should be 8-bit.
Save all textures as PNG for smallest filesize.
I hope this helps. Good work on the golem and staff.

That's common sense, though he already knows he wants to go for the big formats and stuff ;) (he'd know better to do that if he has to :P)

humm...
yes you right... this is a great solution for limite the size of files..but infortunely you decrease the graphic quality...no?

- That is the question! size or quality..?...
but i'm very curious to see your result... especially the 24-bit to 8-bit....

a pk3 should have files compressed anyway, so don't worry about compressing your textures ;)

Cain

Yes you right, but at the moment the Pk3 compressed files aren't work...

it is planned for when.? .....

Dunno. Still, you can zip your stuff to compress them ;)

You'll have to deal with bloaty files for now. You could make "low res" versions for those who use p100's (like me.... though I have a big phat 1ghz now)

Yes you right CheapAlert.... look like that... ;)

I checked before and after reducing the resolution and I couldn't tell a difference in game. You just don't get that close to the golem. Also, I am running 1600x1200 resolution with 4xAA and 16x aniso (Radeon 9700 Pro), so if there was a quality difference I'd see it.

The walls are different. You CAN walk right up to a wall and get very close, so it is more important that the wall textures are high resolution than the models (or floors or ceilings). Same goes for doors, which you will definitely get very close to before opening.

Nice crossbow Cain! Finally the most commonly used weapon gets a model :)

Though you forgot the firing states when it's powered up ;)

well for the green glow effect on the weapon itself, you could make the "muzzleflash" model a copy of the crossbow model with a bit more "fatness" to have a "shell" like effect.

That way you can texture the crossbow and highlight the parts reflecting off the arrow on the wood.

hmm i found it strange when moveing it seems to me like the crossbow it self is moving but only up front. and the sprite has the metal thingy up at the top and wood at the bottom. but anyways nice work cain cant wait till its done:) by the way who is doing the dragon claw? i always thought that weapon looked cool

The HERETIC Crossbow...
well, the green special effect are very crap
Cain, nice crossbow!
But the model needs work on the crossbow body to make it more like the sprite (shown below) when the status bar is not shown.
http://www.freewebs.com/david_osu/Crossbowsprite.png
The wood body should go all the way down to the bottom of the screen. At the middle of the wood body there should be a metal strap.

I fixed the green electric effect. Here's the new textures:

When I install the crossbow model, nothing shows up for the crossbow 'on the floor' before you pick it up, no sprite, no model. Anyone know how to fix this?

Caden
February 26th, 2004, 07:16 PM
i dunno im too lazy to. maybe cain is changeing the pick up?

Cain
February 26th, 2004, 07:42 PM

Vermil

The top lines of Cain's crossbow ded are about the pickup model. Prehaps it accidently contains the wrong path to the JHRP pickup model?

Well, I also like Cain's Crossbowmodel but, it really doesn't look like the original Sprite. The Color of the wood is too bright, the metal thingi on the big part of the crossbow is too large and some other things to complain about :(

Vermil : The top lines of Cain's crossbow ded are about the pickup model. Prehaps it accidently contains the wrong path to the JHRP pickup model?

-It's possible *book* , i go to remake the ded an realigne me on the JHRP path...

Also I only just nocticed this when I downloaded the crossbow.

While the graphics used by both the normal crossbow and powered up version during firing are the same. They don't share the same set of states in objects.ded.

The crossbow ded currently only includes the firing states for a normal shot and is missing the states for firing a powered up shot.

Cain
February 27th, 2004, 08:54 AM
Yes because, if you see good, the powered up firing concern that draws it and not the model...

you see an difference when you use the tome of power on the crossbow sprite..?

Vermil
February 27th, 2004, 09:05 AM
My apologies if the above description was poor, hopefully this one is more understandable.

The crossbow graphics don't change when the weapon is powered up.

Normally the cross uses CRBOWATK1_x when you fire.
But when powered up it uses the states CRBOWATK2_x, which seem identical to CRBOWATK1_x except they cycle a little faster.

The ded only contains model info for the CRBOWATK1_x states.

It's just a matter of a bit of copying and pasting in the ded.

K .. i go to see that with a lot of atention...

thank you for your implication in this problem... :)

thanks Cain the lightning effects looked cool on ur staff, i think they would look good on the claw if u made it. also is it just me or does it seem like the crossbow is turning on its own when walking? looks to me like its looking left and right...
