I'm making some DooM II levels but I want some of DooM I's midis. Ive tried to use the programs 'Midi To Mus' and 'Mus to Midi,' but I can't run those since I have a FAT 32 type file system (similar reason I can't use any earlier DOS-based DooM engine editors). Does anyone know of an editor I can use to extract music from, say, Doom, Heretic or Hexen to put it into my wad? Thanks.

try using wintex to copy the DooM 1 midis to your wad and rename them to the DooM II music names.

I tried downloading WinTex version 5.0, but when I try to run it I get a warning, that I'm missing a vbx2-ish dll or something. I think it might have to do with my FAT 32-based system, but I'm not sure. I reformatted my hard drive for unrelated reasons, and it was that way beforehand, too. Thanks anyway, though. :)

wintex just does that. you should be able to download the required .dll if you type in a search in google

FYI, technically the format is MUS, which is just like MIDI with a few restrictions, for example file size less than 64kb.

Now to answer your question:

You can use DeePsea's export function (press F7 - select Export), then click so only theMIDI/MUS radio button is enabled, press "Show Types Selected". This just helps you find the MUS stuff faster.

Now after you highlight the one you want, click the MUS button to save it as an external file. Repeat as desired.

The project you are in determines the MUS files shown. So for example, if you picked DOOM.PRJ, then you would have given DOOM.WAD for that project and the DOOM MUS is shown. If you picked HERETIC.PRJ (HERETIC.WAD), then the Heretic MUS is shown and so forth.

To get the new MUS files into your PWAD:

Select F7-Merge/Import. Select the Target PWAD as your PWAD. Then select "Add Lump Files" and pick the files you saved above - either all at once or 1 at a time. Now rename them to the name that DOOM2 wants to see using the Rename Lump button. Put the cursor in the right side list box after which you want to save them (default is last), then press Save ALL files and it's a done deal.

Similar sequence works for any lump actually, not just MUS.
