I was cleaning out the closet, and I came across this DOOM compilation I bought MANY years ago.

DOOM Collectors addition with Ultimate, II and Final Doom. Since I am new to this seen but not new to DOOM by any means, these copies will be good to get me started in "modding" DOOM correct?

I also came across Master Levels for DOOM II. If I remember correctly this CD has over 3-4000 custom WAD's. I remeber playing some years back and most where huge, or included cool inserst like the simpsons characters and stuff. Can I use these wads with the modidified DOOM? They are all legit wads.

One more question, I also have a old copy of DOOM for GURU's. Its a thick ass book and all utilities to make my own wads and characters etc. Is this outdated? Or can I still use these tools and apps to maximize my DOOM experience? OR is there better stuff out now?

I came to this site thru Gentoox, which is a Linux port for Xbox, which I am installing. I will be running Linux off my xbox then saw there were Linux ports of DOOM and hundreds of other games. This is like a dream come true since I cant afford a new computer now, the Xbox is perfect for my situation. TIA for you help. =)

I also came across Master Levels for DOOM II. If I remember correctly this CD has over 3-4000 custom WAD's.The Master Levels are 20 good-quality commercial pwads. The Master Levels CD also contained "Maximum Doom", which is a big shovelware-type collection, of variable quality, mostly ones that were/are freely available on the Internet. Details here (http://www.classicdoom.com/mlcdwads.htm).

Yes, thanks for that listing, tons of maps. I love it!

Now how do I go about modding DOOM to this "NEW" revamp that I was reading about?

I cant believe that there is online multiplay with this, its incredible. How is the gameplay? how are the fragfests? are the fun as hell or what??

I can use these maps no problem even with whatever modification of Doom I go for right?

Most iwads and pwads that were created for the original game will work OK with any port. Occasionally you'll find that some port breaks something important that a wad relied upon - in that case, just use another port.

BTW, you can find lots more pwads (including recent ones) here (ftp://3darchives.in-span.net/pub/idgames/levels/).

Cool! Thanks for the link, damn I have been off the DOOM scene for quite a while, its amazing how much its grown. And to hear that multiplayer is alive and thriving is sweeter than ever.

Does anyone reccomend a port i should start with?

And hows the online play?*casper*

For online, you'll want Legacy or ZDaemon. Or DooM Connector, when that's working again.

I have the master levels. I tried them on jdoom. It worked great. Generally levels only tested on the original Doom seem to work great with jdoom.

Not sure about other ports though, I've only used jdoom.

I can't confirm it personally, but some people have said that the Collector's Edition includes the Master Levels.

Unfortunately, I see that the idsoftware store (http://www.idsoftware.com/store/) has recently run out of stock. You should be able to find it available from other online retail outlets though, or via ebay.
