View Full Version : What is wrong with my map???

Can someone take a look at this and try to help me figure out what I'm doing wrong?
EDIT: Removed the file link
This is my first Doom map and for some reason the player keeps getting stuck on straight walls! I'd understand when you get stuck on some of the detail. This is really bugging me. I've spent the past two hours messing around with different nodes builders and DoomBuilder trying to fix it.
Any help would be greatly appreaciated.
BTW this is VERY early and you might get warned about some missing textures/HOM.

The only place i found that i'd get stuck on walls was near the start. This is probably because of the angles the linedefs are in. You can fix it if you change the angles a bit. It would also help if you stay with the grid when you make a map.. basically your entire map is off grid.

So basically stick to 45 degree angles?
What is the actual grid size is it multiples of 2?
Thanks for looking at this for me I'll try moving some around a bit more.

I'll take some screenshots and explain what i meant about the grid. Hold on.
//edit:
now this is from your map:

but it would be much better if you mad it like this:

It seemed like you didn't use a grid anywhere, in some places you even had lines with length 1, wich is not good. It's a good idea to keep it at least 4.
You don't always have to keep your angled lines in a perfect 45-degree angle, but if you get stuck on a wall for some reason, then modify the angle and your problem should go away.
//edit:
the screenshots came out a bit dark, but you should see the small grid lines too.. the grid is set to 4. If you can't see what i'm trying to show you here, add some gamma to the screenshots and you should see it. Or take a random picture editor and invert colours (negative) on them.. then you see it clearly.
//edit:
i inverted them myself. should be clear now.

Ah I see now. Thank you for this it's really helpful - I had no idea of this.
I used to be into mapping with the BUILD engine where there is no limitation of grid position etc.
Incidentally what is it that causes the player to get stuck? Is it due to the Doom movement/wall collision code being inaccurate?
It looks like I have much to learn about wad authoring :D

I suppose it has something to do with how the blockmap is done, but i really can't be sure. The BUILD engine wasn't so picky on following the grid, but it's a good idea to use it in doom maps.

Heh, heh. I've just spent another hour pulling vertexes around TRYING to get them within a grid but it has fixed my problems - *thumbs* Frades.
Map making for Doom is FUN. It's like trying to carve a Donatello out of butter :D

Grid has nothing to do with this guys. Level is no longer available or else I'd tell you specifically what is going on. Most likely the nodebuilder (if no other errors).
All you did by moving vertices around is change the nodes so they now no longer cause a problem.
Grid is an aid for floors/ceiling alignment (like for pads) or for certain objects, but certainly not required. I usually use no grid and just turn it on for specific sections (like for pads).

I use the grid all the time and if you use tiled floors a lot like I do then using the grid = better looking flooring in the long run. The less tiles cut into little weird bits the better. :D

Heh, heh.
I can play em. I can design em. I just can't build em correctly :)
