I was playing ZDoom and I had the thought occur, what if JDoom implemented botmatch mode, too. This would easily give JDoom more of an appeal.

I would love to see bots added to Doomsday.

The best method to develop this would be when Skyjake implements plugin game mode dll's (1.8/2.0?). So if you know anyone who'd like to program it then that would be great!

Since Doomsday is starting to become more popular with wad authors and since Doomsday 1.8 will include a much improved net play support I would think Doomsday will become a LOT more popular for online deathmatch.

Can anyone set up a dedicated server for Doomsday?

I tried it with Doom Connector a while back but I ran into several problems :(

People often start bot projects but then quickly abandon them when they see the enormity of the task. The AI structure of Doomsday will need significant rejigging to make this a real proposition.

I recommend leaving it until Doomsday goes Object Oriented.

If engine not supports external DLLs is not means that you can't write DLL that will loads instead of original and will support botmatch

On that principle Zoow is build

Yeah that is very true Carma but it would be MUCH easier if/when Skyjake implements game mode plugins.

One day I'd like to download the Doomsday source and have a tinker but I don't have any development tools and I'm not capable enough at programing to warrant buying them.

Heh, heh. It's part of a new skin for the jDRP Former Humans that I haven't released yet. Glad it does it's job :D

Why bots must be connected to game directly?
Just create server and thenbots connecting to your created server

SkyJake explains this that "netcode is still not suitable for games over Inet"
